Chapter 80 - The First Strike

The sky above Neo-Virelia hadn't looked normal for days.

Ever since the Gate awakened beneath the city, strange fractures had begun appearing across the atmosphere.

Tiny cracks.

Barely visible.

Like glass splintering beneath unseen pressure.

Most citizens ignored them.

The heroes couldn't.

Because every crack pulsed with the same energy—

the Gate's energy.

And every day—

they grew larger.

Rain drifted across the upper platforms of the Sky Archive.

Cold.

Silent.

Uneasy.

Elaris stood near the observation deck, staring at the distant horizon.

The city glowed beneath her.

Millions of lights.

Millions of lives.

Completely unaware of what was coming.

Behind her, footsteps approached.

Kael.

She recognized them instantly.

Even before he spoke.

"The fractures spread another twelve percent."

His voice was quiet.

Serious.

"No surprise there."

Elaris folded her arms.

"The Gate keeps feeding."

Kael stopped beside her.

For a while—

neither spoke.

The silence wasn't uncomfortable anymore.

It rarely was.

Not between them.

Then alarms erupted.

Every screen inside the Archive flashed crimson.

WARNING.

WARNING.

WARNING.

Xyren's voice exploded through the communication system.

"Elaris!"

"Kael!"

"Get inside. NOW."

Both moved instantly.

The central chamber was chaos.

Researchers shouted.

Holograms flickered.

Emergency lights painted everything red.

Xyren stood in the center of the room, dozens of data streams surrounding him.

For the first time in days—

he looked genuinely shaken.

"What happened?" Kael demanded.

Xyren pointed toward the main display.

Everyone turned.

And froze.

The Gate's energy signature—

had disappeared.

Silence.

Heavy.

Wrong.

Because the Gate couldn't disappear.

It was too large.

Too powerful.

Too active.

It should have been impossible.

Then the readings returned.

Suddenly.

Violently.

Ten times stronger.

From somewhere else.

"No..."

Bloomfall whispered.

The room turned toward her.

Too late.

The fear was already visible on her face.

Real fear.

"What is it?"

Elaris asked.

Bloomfall didn't answer immediately.

Her gaze remained fixed on the screen.

As if she already knew what the numbers meant.

Then she finally spoke.

And her voice was barely audible.

"He's moving it."

The room went silent.

Xyren's expression darkened.

"That's impossible."

Bloomfall shook her head.

"No."

"It isn't."

The display changed.

A new image appeared.

A massive structure hidden beneath Neo-Virelia.

Ancient.

Mechanical.

Impossible.

Like an entire civilization buried beneath the city.

The room stared.

Nobody spoke.

Then Xyren breathed:

"The Core Nexus..."

Every screen died.

Instantly.

Darkness swallowed the chamber.

Then a single image appeared.

Floating above the center of the room.

A reflection.

A mirror.

And inside it—

stood Nyvrix.

Calm.

Smiling.

Watching.

Nobody moved.

"Good evening."

His voice echoed through the Archive.

Soft.

Polite.

Terrifying.

"I wanted to thank you."

Kael's hand immediately moved toward Stormfang.

Lightning crackled across his fingers.

Nyvrix laughed.

"Still predictable."

The smile faded.

Only slightly.

"Every relic."

"Every trial."

"Every shard."

"You collected them perfectly."

Elaris felt her stomach tighten.

Nyvrix continued.

"You thought you were preventing the Gate from opening."

A pause.

"You were building the key."

The room froze.

Xyren's face lost all color.

"No..."

Nyvrix smiled wider.

"Yes."

The image shifted.

Showing the Gate.

Far below the city.

Cracks spread across its enormous surface.

Then something moved behind it.

Not clearly.

Not fully.

Just a silhouette.

Every instinct inside Elaris screamed.

The thing behind the Gate wasn't sleeping.

It was listening.

Nyvrix stepped aside.

And another figure entered the reflection.

Tall.Silent.

Made entirely of shifting black crystal.

No face.

No eyes.

No visible expression.

Even the reflection itself seemed afraid to touch him.

The temperature in the Archive dropped instantly.

Kael felt Stormfang dim.

Bloomfall stepped backward.

And Xyren actually flinched.

For the first time since they had known him.

"Elaris..."

His voice sounded broken.

"We have to leave."

"What is that thing?"

Kael asked.

Xyren stared at the crystal figure.Unable to look away.

Then whispered:

"That's not a soldier."

The figure slowly raised its head.

"That's the Gatekeeper."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Nyvrix smiled.Satisfied.

"Now."He spread his arms.

"Let the first strike begin."

Across Neo-Virelia every fracture in the sky exploded open at once.

Red light flooded the city.

Sirens screamed.

Buildings trembled.

The ground shook.

And somewhere beneath the streets

something ancient opened its eyes.
