Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Bonds and Suspicions

Chapter 19: Bonds and Suspicions

POV: Nova Asahi

The second day of UA brought hero basic training with All Might, but lunch arrived first like a reprieve from the constant pressure of maintaining impossible lies. Nova found himself navigating the cafeteria's controlled chaos—hundreds of aspiring heroes fueled by adolescent energy and quirks that could accidentally level buildings during emotional outbursts.

"Lunch Rush's food smells exactly like the anime suggested. Some things translate perfectly from fiction to reality."

"OI! EVOLUTION!"

Kirishima's voice boomed across the dining hall with the particular enthusiasm he reserved for declaring things "manly." The red-haired boy waved Nova over to a table where familiar faces from Class 1-A had congregated—a social ecosystem forming around shared experiences and compatible personalities.

"Anyone who saved people during the exam instead of just chasing points is manly!" Kirishima declared as Nova approached with his lunch tray. "Plus you totally nailed that tactical stuff yesterday. Sit with us!"

The invitation carried the weight of acceptance that Nova hadn't realized he'd been craving. Kaminari grinned and gestured to an empty chair, while Jiro nodded with cool approval that felt more valuable than enthusiasm. Mina bounced in her seat with barely contained energy that could probably power small electronics.

"Real friends. Not strategic alliances or social links—actual teenage friendship happening organically."

Nova settled into the chair and found himself immediately pulled into conversations that felt wonderfully, impossibly normal. Kaminari's attempts to flirt with passing students fell flat with spectacular consistency, each failure more entertaining than the last. Jiro provided sarcastic commentary that cut through teenage posturing with surgical precision. Mina gossiped about their classmates with the analytical intensity of a investigative journalist.

"So Bakugo exploded a desk this morning during Modern Literature," Mina reported, leaning forward conspiratorially. "Apparently Cementoss assigned essay topics about 'heroic inspiration' and Bakugo wrote three pages about why All Might's retirement speeches are 'weak-ass propaganda.'"

"That's our explosion boy," Kaminari laughed, nearly choking on his yakisoba. "Subtlety is not his strong suit."

"What about you, Nova?" Mina's attention shifted with the focus of a targeting laser. "So what's your quirk REALLY? Because those looked like totally different powers during the assessment test."

Nova felt his chest tighten with familiar anxiety, but delivered his rehearsed explanation with practiced smoothness: "Adaptive Evolution. One quirk that manifests different applications based on environmental needs and training focus. Enhanced reflexes, physical reinforcement, tactical analysis—all facets of the same adaptive system."

"Stick to the script. Consistent story, plausible details, just enough complexity to discourage follow-up questions."

But Jiro's earphone jacks twitched, and her dark eyes fixed on Nova with uncomfortable intensity. "Your heartbeat just jumped about twenty BPM," she said quietly. "Either you're lying, or talking about your quirk makes you really nervous."

The words hit the table like a small bomb. Kirishima and Kaminari exchanged glances while Mina's expression shifted from casual curiosity to genuine concern. Nova felt sweat beading on his neck as he processed the implications of being caught in a lie by someone whose quirk could literally monitor his physiological responses.

"Shit. I didn't account for quirks that could detect deception through biological markers. How many other students have abilities that could expose my cover story?"

"It's complicated," Nova said carefully, meeting Jiro's gaze with as much honesty as he could manage. "There are aspects of my quirk that I don't fully understand yet. Talking about it makes me nervous because I'm still figuring out what it means."

Jiro studied his face for a long moment, earphone jacks swaying gently as she processed whatever she was hearing from his cardiovascular system. Finally, she shrugged and returned to her lunch. "Fair enough. Everyone's got secrets. Just... don't lie to us about important stuff, okay?"

The acceptance in her voice made Nova's throat tight with emotion he couldn't fully express. These people were willing to trust him despite obvious inconsistencies in his story. They were choosing friendship over suspicion, believing in his character rather than demanding perfect transparency.

"I don't deserve this. But I need it more than they could possibly know."

"Thanks," Nova said quietly. "For trusting me despite the weird quirk situation."

Kirishima's grin could have powered the school's electrical grid. "Dude, half our class has weird quirk situations. Todoroki's got daddy issues written in ice and fire, Bakugo's anger management makes professional wrestlers look calm, and don't get me started on whatever Dark Shadow whispers about during quiet moments."

"The point is," Mina added, reaching across the table to pat Nova's hand with casual affection, "we're all weird here. That's what makes us awesome!"

After lunch, Momo approached with the polite determination of someone requesting a private execution. "Nova, might I have a word? I have some questions about quirk theory that I'd love to discuss with someone who has such a... unique manifestation."

"Here we go. Time to convince the smartest person in our class that my impossible power set makes logical sense."

The empty classroom she led him to felt like a courtroom designed for academic interrogation. Momo settled into a chair across from him and produced a notebook thick with observations, diagrams, and analysis that made Nova's enhanced vision pick out details that should have been illegible from this distance.

"I've been studying your performance yesterday," Momo began, her voice carrying the particular precision of someone presenting evidence. "Your 'Adaptive Evolution' switched between enhanced reflexes, physical reinforcement, explosive propulsion, and electrical discharge. Those represent completely different energy signatures and activation requirements."

Nova felt sweat gathering at his hairline despite the classroom's comfortable temperature. Momo's analytical capabilities were approaching the problem from angles he hadn't anticipated—not just questioning his story, but examining the fundamental physics of what she'd observed.

"As someone who creates matter through molecular manipulation," Momo continued, "I understand complex quirks with multiple applications. But yours defies established patterns of quirk expression. The energy signatures were too distinct, the activation methods too disparate."

"She's not asking casual questions. She's presenting a scientific analysis that proves my cover story is impossible. Think. Use every biology term from college, every piece of pseudoscientific explanation that might create reasonable doubt."

"Evolutionary stress responses," Nova said, activating every fragment of his original education. "My quirk doesn't express multiple distinct abilities—it adapts cellular and neurological structures to environmental demands through accelerated evolutionary pressure. Enhanced reflexes represent optimized neural pathways, physical reinforcement activates dormant muscle fibers, explosive projection utilizes controlled chemical reactions in specialized glands."

Momo's pen moved across her notebook with mechanical precision, recording every word while her intelligent eyes searched for inconsistencies. "Fascinating. And the electrical discharge?"

"Bioelectrical amplification through modified nerve clusters. Similar to how electric eels generate current, but adapted for external projection rather than internal defense."

"Please let that sound plausible enough to satisfy her scientific curiosity. I'm running out of biology terms that could explain impossible abilities."

Momo set down her pen and studied Nova's face with the intensity of someone solving a particularly complex equation. When she spoke, her voice carried careful consideration rather than accusation.

"I believe you're hiding something," she said quietly. "The mechanisms you've described are theoretically possible but practically unprecedented. However, your actions during the entrance exam demonstrated genuine heroic character. You prioritized civilian safety over personal advancement, coordinated rescue efforts, and showed tactical thinking that saved lives."

Nova's hands clenched into fists beneath the desk as he prepared for exposure, expulsion, the collapse of everything he'd built over ten months of desperate effort.

"So I'll trust your intentions," Momo concluded, "even if I don't fully understand your methods. Whatever you're hiding, I hope you'll share it when you're ready. Until then, I'd like to work together as partners. Your tactical mind complements my creative problem-solving."

The relief that flooded Nova's system felt like drowning in reverse—sudden, overwhelming, life-saving. Momo wasn't demanding complete truth. She was offering conditional trust based on demonstrated character, betting that his heroic actions outweighed whatever secrets he carried.

"Partnership with the smartest strategist in our class. Access to her analytical capabilities and creative quirk applications. All I have to do is continue being heroic while maintaining lies that get more complex every day."

"I'd like that," Nova said, meaning every word despite the weight of deception pressing against his chest. "Working together, I mean. Your ability to create anything with molecular precision could solve problems I can't even imagine."

Momo's smile was sharp with intellectual anticipation. "Excellent. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish."

The summons to Aizawa's office arrived that evening like a court order delivered by exhausted bureaucrat. Nova found their homeroom teacher surrounded by stacks of quirk research papers, empty coffee cups, and the particular aura of someone who'd spent too many hours questioning reality.

"Sit," Aizawa commanded without looking up from whatever document currently held his attention. "We need to discuss your... unique circumstances."

The office felt smaller than it should, walls pressing close while Nova settled into the chair across from Aizawa's desk. His Enhanced Danger Sense painted the teacher as a moderate threat—not immediately violent, but certainly dangerous enough to destroy everything Nova had built if he chose to act on his suspicions.

"Here it comes. The confrontation I've been dreading since yesterday's assessment test."

"I've taught at UA for five years," Aizawa said, finally raising his bloodshot eyes to meet Nova's gaze. "I've seen every type of quirk manifestation, genetic anomaly, and late-bloomer development pattern in the academic literature. I know when students are hiding things."

Nova forced himself to maintain eye contact despite every instinct screaming to look away from those penetrating stares. "I'm not sure what you mean, sensei."

"Your 'quirk' registered as multiple separate abilities to my Erasure," Aizawa continued with the relentless precision of someone presenting irrefutable evidence. "Not facets of a single power, not applications of adaptive evolution—distinct energy signatures that my quirk could target individually. That shouldn't be possible."

"Shit. He knows. He's confirming that the system's abilities register as separate quirks to external analysis. There's no way to explain that without revealing the impossible truth."

"Principal Nezu vouched for you," Aizawa said before Nova could formulate a response. "He seems to believe your secrets aren't dangerous to the school or students. I'm willing to trust his judgment—for now."

The words carried the weight of conditional reprieve rather than absolution. Nova felt like a condemned man receiving a stay of execution with an expiration date written in invisible ink.

"But understand this," Aizawa continued, leaning forward with the intensity of someone delivering ultimatum. "If your secrets endanger my students, if whatever you're hiding puts these kids at risk, I will erase every ability you possess and remove you from this school permanently. I don't care what arrangements you've made with the administration."

The threat was real, immediate, and terrifying in its absolute certainty. Aizawa's Erasure could disable Nova's system abilities, leaving him Quirkless and defenseless in a world that worshipped power. But beneath the threat lay something that might have been concerned protectiveness—a teacher willing to make hard choices to safeguard his students.

"I swear on my life," Nova said, putting every ounce of conviction he possessed into the words, "I'm here to protect people, not harm them. My quirk is complicated, my situation is unusual, but my intentions are heroic. I want to save lives and become the kind of hero people can count on."

Aizawa stared at him for what felt like geological ages, searching for cracks in Nova's facade or signs of deception in his body language. Whatever he found seemed to satisfy some internal criteria for acceptable risk.

"Prove it through your actions," Aizawa said finally, dismissing him with a wave that somehow managed to convey both threat and grudging approval. "Words are cheap. Heroism is demonstrated through choices made under pressure."

Walking back to the dorms through UA's evening shadows, Nova felt the weight of scrutiny settling on his shoulders like lead blankets. Too many people suspected his cover story was incomplete or impossible. Maintaining consistency would require increasingly creative explanations as his abilities developed and his classmates' analytical skills improved.

"Twelve days until the USJ attack. Twelve days to prepare for the League of Villains while juggling suspicious teachers and genius classmates who are starting to see through my lies."

The math felt impossible, but Nova had learned to trust in the power of desperate effort applied consistently over time. He'd cleared half a beach through persistence and built meaningful relationships through careful attention to others' needs.

"If I can maintain my cover for two more weeks, if I can guide everyone through the USJ without revealing my meta-knowledge, maybe I can find a way to be genuinely heroic instead of just strategically deceptive."

But as Nova reached the dormitory entrance, his Enhanced Danger Sense whispered warnings about futures that hadn't happened yet—threats gathering in shadows, plans forming in minds that saw his classmates as obstacles to be removed or prizes to be claimed.

The calm before the storm was ending, and Nova wasn asahi wasn't sure he was ready for what came next.
