Chapter 103: The Tomb Infiltration
POV: Sam Barton
Dawn breaks over the island, and I've finalized the plan: my Phasing clone enters the tomb intangibly, avoiding physical contact with protections that would wake Silas immediately, retrieves the cure, and phases back out.
Simple in concept. Potentially catastrophic in execution.
"Last chance to reconsider," Klaus offers as we position at the tomb entrance.
"We came for the cure," I reply. "Leaving without trying betrays everyone who needs it."
Bonnie channels Bennett ancestors, creating magical overlay that shows my Phasing clone exactly where supernatural barriers exist. "The tomb is warded in layers—physical wards that trigger on touch, magical wards that activate on living presence, temporal wards that wake Silas if disturbed. Your clone's intangibility should bypass the first two, but the temporal wards..."
"Are unavoidable," I finish. "So we work fast."
I send my Phasing clone through the stone wall, maintaining mental connection as he enters Qetsiyah's masterwork.
The tomb is chamber carved from bedrock, walls inscribed with binding spells that radiate power even my clone can feel. And there, on stone slab in the chamber's center, lies Silas.
Desiccated form two thousand years old, vampire appearance frozen in death. He looks like Stefan—doppelgänger connection making them identical despite millennia separating their births.
On Silas's chest rests a single vial of amber liquid.
The cure.
My clone approaches carefully, phasing through supernatural barriers that would incinerate solid matter. Each layer feels like passing through fire made of pure magic, but intangibility protects him from the worst effects.
[PHASING MASTERY: 28% → 35%]
[MP: 960 → 820 → REGENERATING]
The clone's hand reaches for the cure vial.
Contact.
Silas's consciousness snaps awake like steel trap closing, engaging me mentally through the mystical connection Qetsiyah established.
"System-wielder." Silas's mental voice is ancient, amused, terrifying in its casual power. "I feel you—anomaly outside fate, just as Qetsiyah's predecessor was. You're here for the cure?"
I respond mentally, very aware my physical body outside is vulnerable while I'm engaged in psychic conversation. "Stay asleep. We're taking the cure and leaving."
Silas laughs, and the sound echoes through my mind like bells carved from grief. "Take it. Please. I want to be mortal again—to die finally after two thousand years conscious entombment. Death is all I want, and that vial grants it."
"Then why warn me?" I ask suspiciously.
"Because taking the cure destabilizes the balance Qetsiyah created," Silas explains. "The Other Side, supernatural purgatory, is anchored to Amara who I loved. The cure was meant for me to take after suffering sufficiently. Removing it from the tomb begins collapse of the entire system. You'll save one immortal while dooming thousands of trapped souls."
The implications crash over me, but my Phasing clone has already grabbed the vial.
"Consequences will follow," Silas continues. "But I find I don't care anymore. Wake me, system-wielder. Let me finally end this cursed existence."
My clone phases back through the tomb walls, carrying the cure, and I sever the mental connection with Silas.
But the damage is done.
The tomb shakes violently, stone cracking as Silas's physical awakening begins despite our precautions. Connor's hunter mark flares blindingly bright.
"We need to leave NOW!" Connor shouts. "He's waking anyway! The tomb restraints are failing!"
We run for the beach, island's defenses attacking with renewed fury now that Silas's awakening has begun.
Spirit guardians reform faster than we can destroy them. Illusions assault us with visions of failure and death. The forest itself comes alive, trees grasping with wooden limbs that try crushing us.
Klaus and Stefan fight rear guard, their vampire strength buying time for Connor and Bonnie to reach the boat. Rebekah reaches desperately for the cure vial I'm clutching, but I shake my head.
"Not here! Not while running for our lives!"
My Magic Absorption clone drains attacking spirits, blazing so bright he's visible in broad daylight. The magical exertion pushes his mastery past threshold.
[MAGIC ABSORPTION MASTERY: 95% → 98%]
[APPROACHING PERMANENT STATUS]
We reach the beach, board the boat, and Stefan guns the engine. The vessel speeds away from the island as Qetsiyah's defenses erupt with magical fury.
Behind us, Silas's tomb crumbles, ancient stone falling away as two-thousand-year-old immortal frees himself from entombment.
Silas's voice echoes in my mind one final time: "Run, little system-wielder. But we'll meet again—I'm coming to see this modern world and the anomaly who disturbed my rest. Thank you for ending my imprisonment."
[CURE RETRIEVED: SUCCESSFUL]
[SILAS AWAKENING: INITIATED]
[EXPERIENCE GAINED: +900]
[QUEST COMPLETED: THE IMMORTALITY CURE]
[BONUS EXPERIENCE: +1,000]
[LEVEL 38: 4,500/5,600 TO LEVEL 39]
The island disappears behind us, but I can feel Silas's consciousness stirring, ancient power waking after twenty centuries of forced sleep.
I clutch the cure vial—small container of amber liquid that grants mortality to any immortal, retrieved at the cost of unleashing the first immortal on the modern world.
Klaus examines my expression. "We got what we came for. But you look like we just made terrible mistake."
"Because we did," I reply grimly. "Silas is awake. And he's coming."
The boat speeds toward Mystic Falls, carrying the cure and news that will reshape everything.
Caroline's waiting for me there, unaware that I've just unleashed ancient monster and established psychic connection with immortal who's been trapped in darkness for two thousand years.
I check my phone as signal returns—seventeen missed texts from Caroline, each one increasingly worried.
I respond simply: "Got the cure. Silas is awake. Coming home. We need to prepare."
Her reply is immediate: "I don't care about the cure or Silas. Just come home safe."
Three days until we reach Mystic Falls.
Three days to figure out how to explain that I succeeded in getting the cure but failed catastrophically in keeping Silas contained.
The Clone Sovereign versus the first immortal.
Round one: Tactically successful, strategically disastrous.
Round two: Coming soon, whether I'm ready or not.
