Chapter 88: The Hunter's Campaign - Part 2

POV: Sam Barton

The school takeover happens third period on a Tuesday, and my Sensory clone's warning comes thirty seconds before Connor locks down the gymnasium with the entire senior class inside.

"Explosives rigged to exits," my clone reports. "Connor's armed with enough weapons to kill everyone. Tyler's in there. Caroline. Matt. This is endgame."

I'm in calculus when the alert hits, and I blur with Enhanced Speed to the gym before the teacher can finish calling my name.

Connor stands at center court with detonator in hand, weapons strapped across tactical vest, and expression of someone who's reached his breaking point.

"Vampires of Mystic Falls," Connor announces loudly. "Surrender yourselves, or these humans die. You have ten minutes."

Tyler's sitting with the other students, hybrid nature making him the obvious target. I signal him subtly to stay calm, stay hidden, don't reveal what he is.

Caroline catches my eye from across the gym, her fear visible but controlled. Matt's beside her, and I see him mouth "What do we do?"

My clones deploy outside the building: Phasing ready for infiltration, Defensive Shield prepared to protect students, Mind Shield monitoring Connor's mental state, Magic Absorption detecting any Expression magic Shane might have laid, Sensory tracking all variables, Strength as physical backup.

Inside, I raise my hand. "Connor. Let me negotiate. I'm human—you know I am. Let me mediate this."

Connor's eyes narrow, but he nods. "The anomaly. Fine. Talk. But if any vampire comes through those doors, everyone dies."

I step forward slowly, hands visible. "These people are innocent. Killing them makes you the monster, not the vampires."

"The vampires will keep killing if not stopped," Connor counters, but his voice carries doubt.

"The Mystic Falls Accord stopped the killing," I argue. "Three months without vampire murders. Peace works, Connor. You've seen it."

Outside, my Mind Shield clone relays messages to Damon and Stefan who've arrived with vampire speed: "Don't storm the building. It's a trap. Connor wants you to attack."

Connor's resolve is wavering—I can see it in his body language, the way his grip on the detonator loosens fractionally.

Then Professor Shane stands up from where he'd been sitting with the "hostages."

"Connor," Shane says pleasantly. "The anomaly is right about one thing—peace has settled here. Which means we need chaos to complete the map. Kill the hybrid. His death will activate your mark fully."

Connor goes pale. "What? You said we were protecting people—"

"I said you'd serve a greater purpose," Shane corrects. "And you will. Your death by supernatural hand will pass the mark, complete The Five's map to Silas, and awaken true immortality. Your family's murder will finally mean something."

The betrayal on Connor's face is devastating.

"You knew," Connor breathes. "You knew about my family. You used—"

"I orchestrated everything," Shane admits cheerfully. "Found you, trained you, sent you here specifically to die. The hunter's curse activating is essential to my plans. So please—kill the hybrid, force his friends to kill you, and let's move this along."

Connor's gun moves toward Tyler with shaking hands—caught between mission and manipulation, between rage and realization.

My Defensive Shield clone materializes instantly, golden barrier stopping the bullets before they reach Tyler.

"You're being used, Connor!" I shout. "Shane wants you dead. He needs the hunter's curse activated to find Silas's tomb. Don't give him what he wants!"

Sheriff Liz's SWAT team surrounds the building outside, but I signal her frantically to hold position—storming the gym risks triggering Connor's explosives.

Connor looks at Shane with betrayal and fury warring across his expression. "You said this was righteous work. You said I was saving people."

Shane's smile is cold and satisfied. "You are. Your death will awaken something far more important than human lives—true immortality returned to the world. Silas deserves freedom after two thousand years of torture."

Connor's finger moves toward the explosive trigger.

I have seconds to act.

[HOSTAGE CRISIS: CRITICAL POINT]

[SHANE'S VILLAINY: REVEALED]

[CONNOR RELATIONSHIP: BETRAYED ALLY]

[EXPERIENCE GAINED: +600]

[LEVEL 36: 1,500/5,200 TO LEVEL 37]

My Phasing clone moves first, materializing beside Connor with intangible form positioned to intercept the detonator if necessary.

"Connor," I say urgently. "You can choose differently than Shane planned. You can walk away from this, expose his manipulation, help us stop Silas instead of serving him. Your family wouldn't want you dying as someone's puppet."

Connor's hand trembles on the trigger, tears streaming down his face as twenty years of rage and grief and purpose collapse under Shane's casual betrayal.

The gymnasium holds collective breath, waiting to see whether Connor Jordan dies as Shane's weapon or survives as something else entirely.
