Chapter 73 - Combat Precognition

Monday night. The warehouse.

Peter stepped into the dimension at 10:14 PM. Outside, the clock would not move again until he chose to leave.

Twenty-four hours waited for him. He had learned a long time ago not to waste a single one of them.

"Training queue for today," Peter said.

"Martial arts synthesis," FSIS replied. "You requested a full pass through the remaining unmastered systems in the archive. Estimated count is one thousand six hundred and twelve styles not yet integrated."

'A lot of ground to cover,' Peter thought. 'Good.'

He stepped onto the mat. FSIS lit the room's edges with soft blue light and pulled up the first style on the list, a Filipino stick fighting system he had catalogued years ago but never drilled to mastery.

The first pass through was mechanical. He watched the form data scroll across his vision, absorbed it through Enhanced Memory, and ran the motions until his body stopped thinking about them and simply did them.

By the fourth style, something had changed in how fast the absorption happened.

'It used to take me an hour per style,' Peter thought. 'Now it is closer to twenty minutes.'

"Your Adaptive Mutation trait appears to extend beyond biology," FSIS said. "Neural pathway formation for new movement patterns is accelerating with each additional style learned. The brain is optimizing itself the same way your cells optimize foreign genetic material."

"So the more I know, the faster I learn."

"That is an accurate summary."

Peter kept moving. Krav Maga. Silat. A Brazilian system built around ground control that he folded into his existing grappling knowledge inside minutes instead of hours. Each style stacked on the last, and something in his body kept finding the connections between them without being told to look.

By hour six he had cleared eighty-three styles.

FSIS ran a combat simulation to test integration, a swarm scenario with six armed opponents attacking from every angle. Peter moved through them without pausing, weapon disarms flowing into throws flowing into pressure holds, three different fighting systems blending into something that was not quite any of them anymore.

One simulated opponent came in low from behind.

Peter's arm moved before the thought finished forming. He caught the strike, redirected it, and had the simulated attacker on the ground before he consciously registered the danger.

"Report," Peter said, breathing steady but faster than usual.

"Your reaction preceded the simulated attack by approximately zero point four seconds," FSIS said. "This exceeds standard reflex timing for a threat you did not visually track."

Peter ran it again. Same result. Then again, with a faster opponent.

Same result.

[New Trait Unlocked: Combat Precognition (Passive)]

[Effect: Analyzes opponent movement patterns in real time during sustained combat. Predicts the next probable actions before they occur.]

'Not spider-sense,' Peter thought. 'This is something else. This is the styles talking to each other.'

He spent the next two hours testing the trait deliberately, running simulations against opponents using unfamiliar systems, watching how his body adjusted its predictions the moment enough data came in. It was not perfect. It needed pattern exposure first. But once it had that exposure, it worked faster than conscious thought could keep up with.

By the end of the day he had cleared four hundred and nine styles.

[Martial Arts: Master — 347 styles → 756 styles. Synthesis accelerating.]

FSIS pulled up the full archive count before Peter left the mat.

"For context," FSIS said, "the documented martial arts systems across recorded history exceed three thousand distinct disciplines, counting regional variations and historical forms no longer actively taught."

"So I am a little over a fifth of the way through everything that has ever existed."

"Correct."

Peter allowed himself something close to a smile. 'At this rate, mastering all of them stops being a milestone and starts being a hobby.'

He left the dimension at 10:14 PM. Not a second had passed outside.
