Chapter 53 - Triggered

*Stacy Brownstone. 3:52 AM.*

Gwen Stacy woke with a gasp. Her scientific mind immediately cataloged symptoms. Elevated heart rate. Rapid breathing. Sweat. Adrenaline spike.

Classic nightmare response. Except it hadn't felt like a nightmare. It had felt like something else.

She sat up. Grabbed her tablet. Started taking notes. Documenting while the memory was fresh.

"Dream sequence. Urban combat scenario. Large-scale destruction. Teamed with Peter and MJ. Advanced capabilities displayed. Emotional intensity extreme. Sense of familiarity despite impossible circumstances."

She typed rapidly. Trying to capture details before they faded. But they were already slipping away. The harder she focused, the less she could remember.

"Subject experienced prophetic sensation. Dream felt like memory of future event. Subjects worked as coordinated unit. Trust levels abnormally high. Willing to sacrifice for team and civilians."

Gwen stopped typing. Read what she'd written. Frowned.

'This doesn't make sense,' she thought. 'Dreams of future events aren't scientifically valid. Prophetic visions don't exist. This is just my subconscious processing today's training.'

But it had felt different. More real. Like she'd actually lived through those events. Actually fought that battle. Actually stood with Peter and MJ against something terrible.

She could still feel it. The connection. The absolute trust. The certainty that they would face anything together.

'Spider-DNA integration affecting brain chemistry,' Gwen wrote. 'Possible pheromone bonding. Neural pathway alterations. Shared dream state between connected individuals?'

That last part made her pause. Shared dreams. Could that be possible? If the spider DNA created some kind of neural network between them, could they share experiences while sleeping?

'Need to test,' Gwen wrote. 'Compare dream content with MJ and Peter. See if we experienced the same scenario. Document overlap. Analyze mechanism.'

She tried to remember specific details. What had they been fighting? What did the suits look like? What was the threat?

But it was gone. Faded like morning mist. All that remained was feeling. Emotion. The sense that something important had happened.

Gwen lay back down. Stared at the ceiling. Her analytical mind worked through possibilities.

'Enhanced DNA. Neural bonding. Prophetic dreaming. Shared consciousness. Too many variables. Not enough data.'

She needed to talk to Peter and MJ. Compare notes. Figure out what was happening to them.

Because something was definitely happening. Something beyond just physical enhancement. Something that connected them in ways she didn't understand yet.

'Tomorrow,' Gwen decided. 'After school. We'll discuss this. Document it properly. Understand it scientifically.'

She closed her eyes. Tried to sleep. But the feeling remained. The certainty that she'd seen something real. Something true.

A glimpse of the future. Of who they would become. Of what they would face together.

Three heroes. United. Against darkness.

Gwen didn't know why she believed it. But she did. Completely. Absolutely.

'We're going to be something important,' she thought as sleep finally claimed her. 'The three of us together. We're going to matter.'

*Peter's Room. 4:15 AM.*

Peter woke suddenly. His spider-sense was screaming.

He sat up fast. Looked around. Scanned for threats. His enhanced senses swept the room. The house. The neighborhood.

Nothing. No danger. No intruders. No threats.

But his spider-sense continued tingling. Not warning him of physical danger. Warning him of something else.

Connection. The two bright points of awareness in his perception. MJ and Gwen. Both were awake. Both were distressed.

'They're afraid,' Peter realized. 'Both of them. Something happened. Something that scared them.'

He reached for his phone. Almost texted them. Then stopped.

'It's four in the morning. They're probably just having nightmares. Stress from everything that happened. Getting powers. Training. Their brains are processing trauma.'

But the feeling persisted. The certainty that something important had occurred. Something that connected to all three of them.

Peter lay back down. Closed his eyes. Tried to remember if he'd dreamed anything significant.

Vague impressions came. Fire. Battle. Standing with someone. Fighting together. But the details were gone. Slipped away before he could grasp them.

'Probably nothing,' Peter thought. 'Just stress dreams. We all had them.'

But deep down, he wasn't sure. The spider-sense didn't usually trigger for nightmares. It warned of real threats. Real dangers.

And right now, it was telling him something had changed. Something important. Something involving MJ and Gwen.

'I'll talk to them tomorrow,' Peter decided. 'Make sure they're okay. Check on the connection. See if anything unusual happened.'

He tried to sleep. But anticipation kept him awake. The sense that something was coming. Something that would change everything.

Hours passed. Finally, his alarm went off. 6:00 AM. Time to start the day.
