Chapter 211 - Bai Yan Summons the Black Tortoise. Just Once.

Konoha --- Eastern Edge

Evening of day five.

The Observer's Anchor had been showing Bai Yan things since the scroll closed.

Not constantly.

In pulses.

The way a wound feels different depending on whether you're moving or still.

He'd learned to read the pulses.

Most of them were background --- the general shape of how the next few days might move.

Blurry.

Unreliable as specific prediction.

Useful as general direction.

This one was specific.

He'd felt it during the afternoon prep, slicing vegetables for the evening service.

A sharper-than-usual image.

Clear enough to identify:

A group of individuals.

Konoha's eastern edge.

Tonight.

Not Kaguya.

Not Moon Temple.

Not any of the large moving pieces.

Something smaller.

But structured in a way that had suspicious timing.

He'd checked the chat.

Nothing from the Sage or Kakashi.

Nothing that indicated anyone else had noticed.

He'd put the knife down.

Told Ayame he needed an hour.

She'd looked at his face and said come back before the evening customers.

He was at the eastern edge now.

The specific location the Anchor had shown him.

He stood in the trees at the perimeter.

Listening.

Voices, distantly.

He moved closer.

Three people.

Adult.

Not Konoha headbands.

Sound ninja.

Not the Sound Four --- not that significant.

Three mid-level operatives running observation on Konoha's perimeter.

Not attacking.

Not infiltrating.

Observing.

Specifically: observing the training grounds.

Specifically: running chakra signature tracking on individuals whose chakra they'd been given profiles for.

Someone had given Sound nin Naruto's chakra profile.

And Sasuke's.

They were mapping the training ground locations and schedules.

He stood in the trees and watched them work for three minutes.

Long enough to understand the structure of what they were doing.

Long enough to determine it wasn't immediate threat --- they weren't here to act tonight.

But they were collecting information for someone who would act later.

He thought about Orochimaru.

Who had, as of four days ago, abandoned the Konoha Crush Plan but not ceased being Orochimaru.

Who had filled sixty-three pages of research notes on the scroll's rewards.

Who had pocketed a fragment of the Suna-Suna Fruit.

Who had said Sasuke came to me voluntarily in the future with the specific satisfaction of someone who had not given up on that particular interest.

He thought about the footage.

About a future that was diverging.

The observers weren't doing anything actionable yet.

They were gathering.

Which meant there was time.

But not indefinite time.

He stepped back from the perimeter edge.

He looked at the clearing behind him.

He considered his options.

He could go to Kakashi directly with what he'd seen.

Simple.

Efficient.

He could also verify something he'd been wondering about since the scroll distributed rewards.

He formed seals.

Slowly.

Not the full invocation --- just the opening.

He spoke a name.

The Black Tortoise came quietly.

That was the Tortoise's way.

The Azure Dragon came with wind.

The Vermilion Bird came with heat.

The White Tiger came with pressure.

The Black Tortoise came quietly.

It manifested at the edge of the clearing as a shape first --- darker than the shadows around it, enormous, moving with the specific unhurried quality of something that had been waiting comfortably for a very long time.

Its shell was the color of deep water.

Its eyes were amber.

It looked at Bai Yan with the mild attention of something that had seen everything and found most of it interesting.

You called, it said.

Not in sound.

In the specific resonance of very old chakra making contact with a human nervous system.

"Briefly," Bai Yan said. "Three Sound nin. Konoha eastern perimeter. Profile-tracking on two of my people. Can you confirm the commissioning chain?"

The Tortoise was quiet for a moment.

Not thinking --- it knew already.

Organizing how to say it.

Orochimaru, it said. Not direct commission. Through two intermediaries. The profiles were prepared twelve days ago, before the scroll appeared. The mission was not updated to account for the scroll's changes.

"Old information," Bai Yan said.

Yes. The operatives don't know the target profiles have changed significantly since commissioning.

"Changed how significantly?"

The profiles were made for a child with standard chakra reserves and developing Rasengan technique. They were not made for a child with a Nine-Tails Harmony Seal, a developing Sage Mode foundation, and a secondary Rasengan modification his father never achieved.

Bai Yan looked at the Tortoise.

"He doesn't know what Naruto has become in the last five days."

Correct. He's using pre-scroll intelligence.

"And Sasuke's profile?"

Similar. Pre-scroll. Does not account for the Six Paths seed cultivation.

Bai Yan was quiet for a moment.

"So they're mapping targets that no longer match their profiles," he said.

Yes. They will report back, and whoever receives the report will make decisions based on outdated information.

"Which means the threat is lower than it looks."

Currently. It will update when Orochimaru receives the observation report and runs his own inference. He is not slow.

"How long until he updates?"

Days, not weeks. He saw the scroll. He will cross-reference. A pause. You should tell Kakashi Hatake tonight.

"I was going to."

I know you were. I'm confirming the timing is appropriate. The Tortoise's amber eyes held him for a moment. You've been acting, these last days.

"Yes."

Less watching.

"Yes."

It suits you better.

Bai Yan looked at it.

"You've had an opinion about that for a while," he said.

For several years, the Tortoise agreed mildly. I did not say so. You were not ready to hear it.

"And now I am."

You acted first. The readiness came from the action. A pause. That is usually how it works.

Bai Yan was quiet.

He thought about Ayame saying good, it means you're actually living here now.

About the Anchor in his pocket.

About the list in his apron.

"Alright," he said. "Thank you."

Of course. The Tortoise shifted its weight slightly. The boy, it said. The anchor.

"Yes."

He will be enough.

"I know."

Do you believe it, or do you know it?

Bai Yan thought about this.

"Both," he said. "Which is better than just knowing."

The Tortoise regarded him.

Yes, it said. Considerably better.

It dissolved back into the shadows.

Quietly.

The way it had come.

The clearing was ordinary again.

Trees.

Evening light.

The distant sound of Konoha going about its business.

Bai Yan stood in it for a moment.

Then he turned toward the eastern perimeter.

He went to collect more information before going to Kakashi.

Not because he needed to.

Because being present in a situation now felt different from watching it from a distance.

He noted the three Sound nin's positions.

Their rotation pattern.

The specific chakra signature trackers they were using.

How long before their observation window closed.

He wrote none of this down.

He remembered it.

He walked back to Konoha.

He was thirty meters from the training ground's eastern access when he heard someone behind him.

He stopped.

"Bai Yan-san."

He turned.

Naruto was sitting in a tree at the edge of the path.

Not hiding --- just sitting.

Cross-legged on a branch at about shoulder height.

A crow on the branch above him that he'd apparently been counting.

"How long have you been there?" Bai Yan said.

"About twenty minutes," Naruto said. "I was doing the census on the night insects. Then you walked by going toward the eastern edge, so I waited."

"You waited."

"You had the face."

Bai Yan looked at him.

"The 'something is happening and I'm going to deal with it' face," Naruto said. "Different from the 'I know something and I'm deciding when to tell you' face."

"You've categorized my faces."

"I've been watching you for eight years."

Fair enough.

Naruto looked at the space where the Tortoise had been.

He'd been on this branch when Bai Yan had summoned it.

He'd seen the whole thing.

"That was the Black Tortoise," he said.

"Yes."

"One of the Four Divine Beasts."

"Yes."

"The scroll said you have all four." He paused. "And all nine Tailed Beasts."

"Yes."

Naruto looked at him.

"Okay," he said.

Just that.

Bai Yan waited for more.

There wasn't more.

"You're not going to ask?" Bai Yan said.

"About the beasts?" Naruto tilted his head. "Later. It didn't seem urgent." He looked toward the eastern edge. "Sound nin?"

"Yes."

"Orochimaru?"

"Indirectly. Pre-scroll intelligence. They don't know how much we've changed."

Naruto thought about this.

"That's actually good," he said.

"Yes."

"So we don't need to do anything dramatic."

"We need to tell Kakashi. He'll handle the operational response." Bai Yan paused. "Nothing else tonight."

Naruto nodded.

He climbed down from the tree.

Landed next to Bai Yan.

He looked at the sky where the Tortoise had been.

"What did it tell you?" he asked.

"That the threat is lower than it appeared. That you're more capable than Orochimaru's current intelligence suggests." Bai Yan paused. "And that you'll be enough."

Naruto was quiet for a moment.

"It said that?"

"Yes."

"The ancient divine beast said I'll be enough."

"In slightly more formal language. But yes."

Naruto looked at the sky.

At the moon, visible now above the treeline.

Still shuddering.

Still there.

He thought about two threads of natural energy.

About the split post.

About the census.

About he's the kind of person who is always ready before he realizes he is.

"Yeah," he said.

He didn't say it like he was convincing himself.

He said it like he was agreeing with something he'd already figured out.

They walked back toward Konoha together.

Bai Yan to find Kakashi.

Naruto to finish his evening census on the way home.

He counted seven people between the eastern edge and the main road.

He noted them all.

Group Chat:

[Bai Yan @Kakashi Hatake: Three Sound nin on the eastern perimeter. Profile-tracking. Pre-scroll intelligence. Orochimaru sourced. Recommend quiet removal before they report back.]

[Kakashi Hatake: When did you see them?]

[Bai Yan: Forty minutes ago. I confirmed the commissioning chain separately.]

[Kakashi Hatake: ...How did you confirm it?]

[Bai Yan: I have sources.]

[Kakashi Hatake: The Tortoise.]

[Bai Yan: ...Yes.]

[Kakashi Hatake: Naruto told me he saw it.]

[Bai Yan: He was doing the census.]

[Kakashi Hatake: Of course he was.]

[Kakashi Hatake: I'll handle the perimeter. Thank you.]

[Bai Yan: The profiles they're using are pre-scroll. They don't know about the Harmony Seal or the Sage Mode foundations or the Six Paths seed.]

[Kakashi Hatake: Orochimaru will update when he receives the report.]

[Bai Yan: Days, not weeks. Before the report is received and analyzed.]

[Kakashi Hatake: So we have a small window.]

[Bai Yan: Yes.]

[Kakashi Hatake: I'll use it.]

Group Chat:

[Uzumaki Naruto: Hey Kakashi-sensei.]

[Kakashi Hatake: Mm.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: Bai Yan told me about the Sound nin.]

[Kakashi Hatake: I know.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: You're handling it?]

[Kakashi Hatake: Yes.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: Okay.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: Also.]

[Kakashi Hatake: Yes?]

[Uzumaki Naruto: I saw the Black Tortoise.]

[Kakashi Hatake: I know.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: It was very big.]

[Kakashi Hatake: ...Yes. They usually are.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: Bai Yan said it told him I'll be enough.]

[Kakashi Hatake: ...]

[Kakashi Hatake: Yes.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: I just wanted someone else to know it said that.]

[Kakashi Hatake: I know. I do now.]

[Uzumaki Naruto: Good. That's all.]

In his apartment, Kakashi set down the chat.

He looked at the ceiling for a moment.

He thought about the evaluation.

About he kept showing up louder than the silence.

He thought about a twelve-year-old sitting in a tree counting night insects, watching Bai Yan summon a Divine Beast, and filing it under not urgent, ask in the morning.

He picked up his book.

Put it down.

Picked it up again.

He was smiling.

Which he would also deny if asked.

He wasn't going to need to deny it.

Nobody was watching.

He kept smiling and read his book.
