Chapter 74 - Pride and Gluttony

Yuna's head spun rapidly, the blood spraying around. It landed harshly onto the ground, and now she was facing the sky. Hours passed.

Yuna could feel the different parts of her body that were spread across the continent, on the edge of her consciousness.

"…"

The air was still in these lands. Her vision was of course, mostly covered by mist.

The standard procedure is for me to wait till the coast is clear. I'll slowly crawl my way toward my head.

But why do I need to do that?

What's the difference? Should I just sit here, watching the sky peacefully. No one will disturb me, not many people can just walk on this corrupted land. Or, I can come back, retrieve all my parts, and… do as I must. As a [Sin], it's my job to prepare the world for the return of the return of the great demon progenitor. That idea has been etched into my brain, ever since the day that [Gluttony] chose me.

Or… perhaps, I chose [Gluttony]?

Ack… I'm terribly hungry.

Her thoughts were again broken upon hearing a loud noise. A loud impact

"!"

Winds blew threw the land, momentarily clearing the mist in that area. Yuna heard footsteps.

Tip.

Tap.

The steps grew louder as the individual got closer.

Yuna was quickly disoriented as the individual who was walking grabbed her by the hair, lifting her up to eye level.

Yuna's orange eyes met with the individuals red eyes.

Pale, with nicely kept black hair, and red eyes as beautiful as a ruby. He shared similar coloring to Stein, the man who had cut Yuna down. However, they did not look similar at all. This man that held Yuna, he had much more of a youthful look, long eyelashes, a slightly feminine face that came with that youth, in comparison to Stein's masculinity.

"You are really a lost cause… so this is where you've been for all those years?" the teenage voice spoke.

"No way… it's you!? [Hubris], you idiot! Damn it, you were supposed to be the one to bail me out all those years ago!"

"Hah, sorry. Unfortunately, my nose isn't as good as yours, when it comes to sniffing out [Sins]."

. . .

[Hubris], possessing Julian's husk of a body, went on a walk with Yuna's head.

"That bastard, Stein. He sealed me deep down in the bottom of the ocean. But my nose caught the body of quite the prideful being. So I lunged toward it, and took it. But after taking the body, it felt like all that pride just left. Anyway, it's no matter. I'm just glad I'm out of there," Hubris let out a sigh of relief. They walked along the shore.

"Unfortunately, everyone is dead, that's for sure. We're the only two who are able to live this long, survive such attacks. Right now, I can smell [Greed], he's been reawakened. [Lust] as well. [Sloth] and [Wrath] might be out of my range, or yet to be awakened."

Hubris suddenly interjected.

"What about?-"

"[Envy], the bitch who got us in this situation, anyway. Yeah, she's alive and kicking."

Yuna laughed, yet there was this expression of annoyance on her face.

"Say, Yuna. Do you ever wonder if the great Demon Progenitor will really come back?"

"My heart says so. I follow my heart."

"I follow my heart as well. A perfect heart. But, my mind is also equally perfect. And this mind, wonders. Doesn't your mind ever wonder?"

"… Of course it does. Sentient life will always ponder. But have you ever heard of the saying 'curiosity killed the cat'?"

"I've never heard of such a foolish saying."

"Sometimes, the cat should stick to hunting. Follow it's natural instincts."

"…"

"Eventually, we'll have the luxury to ponder. For now…"

Hubris sighed, chuckling lightly. With one hand, he pressed his balled fist to his chest.

"…we'll serve our king," he completed her sentence.

Along the walk across the shore, Hubris's expression changed. As if information that he had forgotten suddenly came to him. That was the expression he bared.

"Ah, I can't help you right now, Yuna. There's a lot of things I have to sort up over in Fershingan," he said.

"The Demon Continent? What business could you possibly have over there?" she asked.

"In this new body, I feel that there are some emotions, unnecessary connections that will hinder us. I have to deal with that swiftly."

"S-so what do you expect me to do!? Are you just gonna leave me here!?" Yuna whined, quickly growing frustrated. Her clear frustration gave Hubris a bit of a laugh.

"Of course not. I couldn't do that to a comrade. It's not really a problem; I know what to do. You can pinpoint the location of [Greed], right?"

"Ah… erm— well, yes. I can pinpoint the direction, and roughly estimate the distance based on the intensity of the smell. But I'm not sure if-"

"Your head is small. I can throw you pretty far, if I focus all my mana into it."

"… Alright. It seems to be at the edge of my range, the scent of [Greed], so that would work. All of your energy."

"One more thing. Yuna?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't die."

"…"

Hubris gave Yuna a painful look. One that made him glad that she could not turn her head right now, and stare back at him.

"What a dumb request. I can't die!" she laughed.

After shifting a little bit, Hubris winded his arm back.

Fwsh!

The woman's head went flying, following a high-pitched shriek that got quieter the farther she was.

Of course, Hubris knew that Yuna could die. Perhaps he had worded it wrong. Really, he meant, 'don't leave me behind', or 'let's stop all of this, and leave this wretched world behind.'

The prideful man believed he could do so.

But his nature said otherwise. It told him, to serve the demon progenitor. So, that is what he would do.

Agh, damn it. I guess I'll have to wait a bit, till my mama recovers.
