Chapter 45 - Chapter 45: Two Worlds, One Threat

Kael, still in the Hall of Breath, discussed at length with Master Elian and Lyra. He had shared his insights on the Ki and the presence of the Spiritual Assassins in the waking world, and their role in the defense against the Silent Ones.

Elian and Lyra, in turn, provided him with a deeper understanding of the Ash and its new, insidious tactic of withering the real world.

"Your description of this 'Ki' and its capabilities is illuminating, Kael," Elian said, his voice ringing with renewed hope. "It aligns with our observations of an energy that the Ash cannot directly manipulate. It is an invaluable resource, if we can coordinate."

"And the Ash is becoming more cunning," Lyra added, her expression grave.

"The vital energy of the waking world is being drained, a strategy aimed at stifling all resistance, including what you call 'Ki.' We must act on multiple fronts."

"So, it is clear," Elian resumed, placing his hands on the polished stone table.

"We must create a stable channel of communication. If they could teach some of our people the method to perceive and use this 'Ki,' and we could provide them with real-time information on the Ash's incursions..."

"Yes," Kael nodded. "This would allow us to anticipate their movements in the waking world. And their warriors would be an external defense that the Ash does not expect, since their energy is not bound to the Ash itself."

Lyra crossed her arms, her expression focused. "An alliance between the Ki and the Dream. An endeavor never before attempted, but necessary. We must define exactly who will do what and, most importantly, how we will manage the transition between the two realities safely for all."

Finally, Kael felt the call of his body. It was time to return to the waking world, with new information and an even clearer mission.

He awoke with a slight start in his bed, the familiar wooden ceiling of his uncle's house above him. The exhaustion of the Dream Realm had faded, replaced by a sharp determination.

He slipped out of bed and dressed quickly.

He went downstairs, then entered the shop, finding his uncle busy tidying up some goods. The man looked more weary than usual, with dark circles under his eyes and a slight irritability in his manner.

"Morning, nephew," the uncle mumbled, without looking up from a pile of tools.

"Sleep well? Not like the rest of us, I suppose." He straightened up, massaging his back. "I don't know what's happening, Kael. The crops aren't yielding, the water doesn't taste like anything anymore, and the people... people are nervous, irritable. And the exhaustion, Kael. A weariness that sticks to you, no matter how much you sleep."

He waved a hand dismissively. "It's as if life itself is slowly fading from this village. A strange heaviness in the air."

Kael nodded, his heart heavy. It was exactly what the Custodians had perceived from the Dream Realm. The Ash's corruption was manifesting tangibly.

He found Kenji sitting silently in the shop's courtyard shortly after, busy cleaning and sharpening his daggers. His movements were fluid, almost a meditation in themselves. When Kael approached, Kenji looked up, and his dark eyes met those of the young Custodian.

There was an intensity in that gaze, a honed vigilance.

"Your sleep has improved," Kael said without preamble, sitting across from him. It was a statement, not a question.

Kenji nodded slowly, setting down a sharpened dagger. "A slight, inexplicable positive variation in the Ki," he replied, his voice calm. "A lightening of the burden. Your 'trial,' as you called it. It seems there is more to it than my people know."

A shadow crossed his face. "But then something shifted again. The price is high. The land is suffering. The Ki is stagnating. It is an invisible illness that is spreading."

Kael nodded gravely.

"It is the Ash. Not just in the Dream Realm, but here now, in the waking world. It is like a cancer seeking to drain life itself." He explained to Kenji, in greater detail than he had before, the nature of the Dream Realm: not just individual dreams, but a vast collective unconscious, an ethereal fabric nourished by the consciousness of all living beings.

He described the Ash as a parasitic entity, born from a cosmic error or an ancient corruption, that seeks to absorb and nullify every form of resonance and life.

"Its hunger is infinite," Kael said, "and its strategy is simple: consume, reduce everything to nothing."

He elaborated on the Custodians, their millenary mission to protect the Dream Realm, acting as sentinels and physicians of dreams, using their flames of light and dream magic to combat the corruption.

"The Silent Ones your people face here are only emissaries, extensions of the Ash itself," he explained. "They have no will of their own; they are pure corruption directed by the Whisperer, a lesser but relentless intelligence serving the Ash. And we, the Custodians, fight them in the Dream Realm, diverting them with illusions when we cannot annihilate them, like the Silent Guardian that Anya creates."

Kenji listened with unperturbed attention, absorbing every word.

When Kael had finished, the Ronin sighed. "I understand. For my people, the world is a constant flow of Ki, the vital energy that runs through everything: trees, rivers, animals, and men. It is the balance of life. When the Ki is in harmony, there is prosperity and health. When it is in disharmony, there is disease, weakness, and darkness."

"We are the Spiritual Assassins," Kenji continued, his voice now imbued with an ancient dignity.

"Our mission is to perceive and restore this balance. Our Five Schools—Water, Fire, Earth, Air, and Void—are the ways we learn to manipulate this Ki. The blade you saw is not magic, but a concentrated manifestation of my vital energy. And this 'invisible illness' you have perceived is the poisoning of the Ki. Life itself is becoming fainter, more stagnant. We feel the sap of the earth draining."

His dark eyes met Kael's, a new understanding shining within them. "Your 'Ash' is the source of this disharmony of the Ki. And you fight it from the world of dreams, while we perceive it and confront it in the waking world."

Kael sensed the connection.

"Exactly. Our paths have been separate, but the threat is the same. We are like two hands trying to smother the same fire. Master Elian and the other Custodians have grasped the power of your way, the Ki, because it is not a resonance the Ash can perceive or corrupt directly. This is an invaluable advantage."

Kael leaned forward, his voice lowered.

"Kenji, the Ash has changed tactics. It is no longer content to merely hunt. It is trying to stifle the waking world, to drain its energy, perhaps to eliminate the source of your resistance, perhaps to weaken everyone. To fight it, we must join forces. We must compel it to divert its resources from its expansion and poisoning, forcing it to defend itself on two fronts. We need an alliance."

Kenji pondered Kael's words, his expression thoughtful. The logic was undeniable.

This "Ash" was an existential threat to the balance his people had sworn to protect. "I have others of my people here, on the continent," Kenji said finally.

"They are masters, some of them. We must call a council. That growing disharmony in the Ki is their greatest proof." He looked Kael in the eyes with determination.

"I will convince them."
