Chapter 81 - Petals and Truths II

The weight of the moment lingered in the air, thick and uncertain. The sunlight filtering through the windows seemed like an illusion now, casting long shadows in the corners of the cramped back room. Niah could feel the pulse of magic beneath her skin, a low hum she couldn't ignore.

Jules was still gripping her hand, a small tremor running through her fingers as she processed what had been said. Her wide eyes never left Niah's face.

"Are you really serious about all this?" Jules whispered, mostly to herself, but loud enough for Niah to hear.

Niah nodded slowly. "I'm not expecting you to get it," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "But this is the truth. And the stakes... " she paused, swallowing hard, her voice shaking a little. "They're way bigger than we can even think about."

Jules closed her eyes and let out a slow breath. "So, is everything connected?" she asked. "The strange dog, the disappearing tricks, and that night, the storm? Is all of it linked to what you told me about? The Veil, the darkness... everything?"

She waited for an answer, her eyes still shut.

"Yes," Niah said softly. "It's all connected. And I can't stop it alone."

Jules stared at her, her eyes narrowing as she searched for the truth. For a moment, she seemed unsure, but then her expression turned cold and hard. "I've always had a feeling you were keeping something from me," she said, her voice firm. "You never quite seemed like everyone else. And now I understand why."

Niah's smile felt forced, like it wasn't quite reaching her eyes. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't want to drag you into this, but now... we're out of options."

The air was thick with things left unsaid, and Niah's pause seemed to stretch on forever. She looked at Jules, her eyes searching for something, but what, she couldn't quite say.

"We have to do this," she said finally, the words feeling like a resignation, a surrender to circumstances beyond their control.

The bell over the door rang out, breaking the uncomfortable silence that had settled between them.

Both women tensed.

Through the cracked doorway, Niah could hear footsteps, footsteps that didn't belong here. Not on a quiet morning like this.

"Wait here," Niah whispered urgently, jumping up and stepping back from Jules. "Make sure to lock the door and don't let anyone in, no matter what."

Jules' face was set with a newfound resolve, but her brow was scrunched up in confusion. She didn't ask any questions, not right now.

Niah, on the other hand, seemed to sense that something was amiss. She could feel the strange, unsettling energy in the air.

Without a word, she slipped out the back door and into the alley behind the shop, her senses heightened as she moved cautiously through the shadows.

The air was thick with an eerie pressure, a feeling that always seemed to signal that something was off, and Niah's instincts were on high alert as she tried to make sense of it all.

She moved quietly, her eyes scanning the alleyway, searching for any sign of what might be causing this strange, unsettling feeling.

In the darkness, a person was standing completely still, just watching her.

Zaire.

He stood there, his outline almost eerie in the faint light. The wind had messed up his dark hair, and his cloak was blowing around him. But what really caught her attention was his face.

His expression was tough and thoughtful, like he was figuring something out. It didn't feel right to her. She could sense that something was off.

"Zaire?" she said, her voice barely above a whisper, but a shiver ran down her spine, like something wasn't quite right.

He didn't crack a smile; his face was completely serious. His eyes were a pale grey, like the light of the moon, and they stared into hers with a strong intensity that made her feel a little nervous; it was like a knot in her stomach.

"You're in danger," he said simply.

Niah's pulse quickened. "What do you mean?"

"Something's going on," Zaire said, his voice low and serious, as he took a step closer. "Kassimir's made his move sooner than we thought. He's trying to speed up the awakening process. And you, you're right in the middle of it all."

A shiver crept down Niah's spine, her heart skipping a beat. "Kassimir?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Zaire's eyes darted back and forth, his jaw tightening.

"He's pulling the strings and controlling the course of events," he said, his voice low and urgent.

"And you're the key to making it all happen. The moment you come into your full power, the Veil will tear apart, and everything you thought you knew will be turned upside down. It's already begun, the process is underway, and nothing will ever be the same again. He's using you to bring about this catastrophic change, and once it's done, there's no going back."

Niah's chest tightened. "But I—I haven't even fully—"

"You don't have to do that," Zaire said, interrupting her. "Once you take the final step, the bond is formed, and there's no turning back. Kassimir is aware of this, and he's planning to use your power to break through the Veil and unleash the darkness."

"No," Niah whispered, the world around her spinning. Her heart was hammering in her chest. " But I—I thought I could control it. I thought I could stop it."

"Esme, you're not in charge here, not even close," Zaire said, his voice firm. "Time's slipping away from you, and you can't keep hiding, you have to make a decision, now."

Niah took a step back, her head spinning. " What am I supposed to do?"

"We have to stop him," Zaire said, his voice a little gentler, but his eyes still burning with intensity.

"We can't do it alone, though we need everyone's help. And time is running out, so we need to get ready, fast. We can't afford to wait, not even for a moment."

A sharp crack echoed from the street; a sound too loud to be anything good. Niah's heart lurched.

Zaire's eyes narrowed. "Get inside. Now. Kassimir won't hesitate."

Niah hesitated only a moment before darting back into the shop.

Jules stood frozen at the door, her eyes huge with fear. "What's going on?" she whispered, her voice trembling all over.

"No time to explain," Niah said urgently.

" Get ready. We're going to need to move fast."

As she turned back to the alley, she noticed something, a faint shadow flickering at the far end of the street. It was as if something was moving, heading in her direction.

Zaire was already moving, vanishing into the shadows before she could ask more questions. The silence in his wake only deepened the unease coiling in her gut.

Niah took a deep breath and gathered her thoughts, concentrating on what needed to be done. The first battle was just about to start, and she had to be ready.

And she wasn't running anymore.
