Chapter 80 - Chapter 80 — Escape Through Fire and Steel

The aftermath of the Auction House assault left the corridors littered with the remnants of Qi and mana, shattered talismans, and the lifeless bodies of over 600 Jin Clan operatives. Alaric and Alex, standing at the center of the wreckage, allowed themselves a brief glance at the spoils: beast cores, essence stones, elemental materials, and stacks of gold. Their squad moved efficiently, securing the loot and preparing for extraction. Every movement was precise; every member knew the stakes.

The streets of Rising Sun City were quiet, almost too quiet, as the squad made their way toward the pre-planned escape routes. The air hummed with residual energy, the unmistakable signature of elite cultivators. Alaric's eyes narrowed. "Stay alert. The Jin Clan won't take this lightly."

No sooner had the words left his mouth than the four Guardians appeared, descending from the rooftops with terrifying precision. Each one radiated immense Qi, enough to rival the Sacred Lords they had just slain. The team's formation was tested immediately—several members were struck by devastating bursts of elemental and pure Qi, leaving three heavily injured and four more with minor but painful wounds.

Alaric's sword danced in a blur, deflecting a barrage of strikes from the nearest Guardian. He countered with Phantom Strike combined with Earth Surge, blasting a guardian back into a wall and creating a shield of jagged stone debris. Flames and lightning erupted in tandem, forcing another Guardian to pause mid-assault. Yet, for every guardian Alaric pushed back, the others closed in, cutting off avenues of retreat.

"Alex!" Alaric shouted over the roar of battle, noticing the widening gap between the squad and the encircling Guardians.

Alex's eyes flared with power as he activated his ultimate attack. Ice crystals exploded into the air, spatial rifts twisted the environment, and torrents of freezing wind hurled Guardians backward. The force was enough to stagger the four elite cultivators, buying precious seconds. Alaric and the squad seized the moment, carrying the injured members and moving swiftly toward the outskirts of the city.

The streets became a chaotic gauntlet. Collapsing market stalls and overturned carts blocked paths, but Alaric's strategic use of Lightning Steps allowed him to leap over obstacles with ease, clearing the way for the squad. Alex maintained a protective barrier of spatial energy, allowing no Guardian to strike from behind. Despite their overwhelming power, the Guardians could not predict the coordination between the brothers and their team.

Still, not everyone escaped unscathed. Several squad members were staggered by hits, their stamina waning from prolonged combat. Talisman support and elemental shields were deployed meticulously, preventing what could have been fatal strikes. Each step of their retreat was calculated, weaving through alleyways and side streets pre-planned during reconnaissance.

Finally, the outskirts of Rising Sun City came into view. The stronghold they had prepared on the city's edge stood like a beacon of hope. Alaric and Alex, still vigilant, ushered the squad inside, sealing the entry points with reinforced talismans and traps to deter any immediate pursuit. The injured were quickly tended to, with healing talismans and Alex's mana-based spells stabilizing their conditions.

Alaric's chest rose and fell rapidly, sweat and dust coating his face. He looked at Alex, who was quietly monitoring the squad while maintaining the energy barrier around the stronghold. "That… was too close," Alaric muttered.

Alex gave a faint nod, his expression calm but his eyes reflecting the weight of their mission. "They underestimated us, and we survived. But the Jin Clan knows now who's coming for them. They'll be ready for the next strike."

Alaric clenched his fists, determination hardening in his gaze. "Then we'll be stronger. We've already shown what we're capable of. Next time, we finish this without leaving them a chance to retaliate."

The squad, though battered and bruised, shared the silent resolve of their leaders. The looted materials were safely secured, and while some of the men rested, Alaric and Alex began outlining the next phase of their campaign. Every scar, every brush with death, was a reminder: the Jin Clan may have power, but they had yet to meet the full force of the Vardar Brothers.
