Chapter 5 - Valarr IV

(Valarr's POV)

I was looking up into the sky, seeing the massive figures of the three dragons flying in the distance. Seeing those creatures was surreal, their majestic wings flapping in the air. The sound of their songs was chilling, even from this distance.

"Valarr." I heard someone call out in High-Valyrian

I turned to see Taka walking up to me, wearing his black and yellow robe, his hand resting on the handle of his sword. He was looking at me with a serious expression, one that rarely ever changes.

"Taka." I responded in kind, "What is it?"

"I've noticed that the Young Lady has take a liking to you." He said, tilting his head, "I might warn you that House Targaryen are our Lords, we must not meddle with them."

"I do not know what you are speaking about. Lady Visenya and I are doing nothing of the such." I told him, "I would never disrespect Lord Aerion that way."

"Good." He said, walking past me, "You should remember our place. He has given us shelter and trusts us enough to keep us in his Castle. Do not ruin this for everyone."

I watched as he walked away, making his way to the ramparts of the castle.

"Tch...." I said, scowling at nobody, "What does he think I am going to do?"

I have no intention of doing anything with Lady Visenya. Anything I do with her is by her own orders. If she wants me to walk with her, I walk with her. If she wants to spar, we spar together. I am doing what is expected of someone like me, a sworn vassal of House Targaryen.

Why would Taka think I would do something else?

"Hm...." I rubbed my neck, "I should probably go back home and check on mother."

I took a step forward and heard the bone-chilling growl of a dragon up in the air. I looked up to see that Visenya's dragon, Vhagar, was flying closer to the island. Despite being smaller than Balerion, she was quite large and imposing still. I looked at the visible figure of Visenya, her hair flowing in the air as her dragon glided over the island.

I couldn't help but stare in awe, seeing quite the majestic sight. I didn't know if it was just the dragon or the combination of Vhagar and Visenya. Her hair was quite beautiful and even at this distance, I could see how pure and white it was. I don't need to be close to her to know that the Young Lady was scowling, but despite that, her beauty would still be great-

"What the hell?" I shook my head, "What am I thinking about?"

"I ought to go back."

*************

"Have you eaten?" Mother asked, placing a plate of cooked fish, "You look hungry."

I was sitting down in front of her on the floor, "Not really." I said, taking the plate with a slight smile on my face, "Thank you."

"What did Lady Visenya want with you?" She asked, looking at me with a worried expression

"It is the same as always." I said with a chuckle, "She seemed to taken an interest in my skills."

"I see." She said, "And what did the two of you do?"

"We sparred." I said, "Before she went to fly with her dragon, that is."

There was a dead silence as I began to eat the fish, pulling off the flesh from the bone while I held a cup of wine in my other hand. I could feel Mother's stare as I did this, her eyes piercing right through me. I glanced at her, seeing that she didn't take those eyes off me. It is as if she was contemplating saying something.

"You best not do anything stupid." She said, her voice was soft, "I mean it, Valarr."

I set the fish down, chewing on its meat, "What do you mean?" I asked, "Taka told me the same thing. Careful about what? Visenya?"

"Yes, Lady Visenya." She said, "That girl has taken an interest in you, but she doesn't understand that she is a Lady of a Greater House. House Targaryen are our Lords, Valarr. We may be Valyrian, but we are not Dragonlords worthy of their blood. If Lord Aerion were to discover that his eldest daughter is frolicking with a lesser boy than her, what do you think would happen to you? To us?"

"Mother." I said, "Don't worry. I have no intention of doing anything with Lady Visenya. Am I to refuse her every time she calls for me? She has authority over me, you know that. If Lord Aerion finds out I keep refusing his daughter, I might get punished as well."

"You are young." Mother continued, "And possess a gift that our people might need later on. Lord Aerion will discover that gift and he might use it for his House's purpose. If you are to have a future with House Targaryen, it would be as a sworn blade to them, nothing more."

I nodded, "Yes." I said, "I understand."

She leaned closer, reaching for my cheek, "My precious boy." She said softly, "Do not forget that I love you."

I leaned into her touch, "Yes, Mother." I said, "I know that."

She pulled away, "I heard the sounds of the dragons." She said, "Did all three of them take to flight?"

I nodded, "Yes." I said, "Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes."

She sighed, "Those beasts are majestic creatures." She said, "But they hold the power to lay everything to ruin."

"I agree." I said

"Our people fear them." She said softly, "If we wrong House Targaryen, they are sure to use dragonfire against us."

"That won't come to happen." I said, "Lord Aerion is trusting us."

"How long would that trust last?" She asked with a frown, "How long until he deems us a threat?"

"There are two other Valyrian houses, Mother." I said, "House Celtigar and House Velaryon. They are not dragonlords but they are also Noble Houses. House Targaryen doesn't deem them as a threat, we shouldn't be the same."

"They are Houses that migrated with them." Mother told me, "Not us. We are foreigners, we are strangers."

"Sooner or later, they'll remind us of that."
