The world dissolved into a breathless, silent sea of stars. There was no ground, no sky, only an infinite expanse of velvet blackness punctuated by the cold, brilliant fire of countless suns. The air was thin and carried the scent of cosmic dust and ancient vacuum. The only solid things were the floating stone platforms, irregular islands of rock drifting in the void, leading away into the impossible distance.
The portal winked out behind them, leaving them truly alone in this pocket dimension.
"Whoa," Shui'er whispered, her voice swallowed by the immense silence. She clung to Ye Xingliu's arm, her Wind-Water Steps useless in a place with no air to ride. "This is... a lot bigger on the inside."
"Boss! This is home! The good air!" Little Comet zipped out, ecstatic, doing joyful loops and leaving trails of shimmering light in its wake. "It's a little piece of the outside, inside!"
Ye Xingliu felt it too. The starlight here was not a distant, reflected thing to be sipped from a vein in the earth. It was the main course. It saturated the void, and his Wanderlust Soul drank it in like a man dying of thirst. His compass, warm and heavy in his hand, now displayed a new message:
Starry Sky Trial: Commenced. Objective: Reach the Nexus.
Before them, the first challenge was clear. A path of floating stone platforms, each the size of a small room, stretched into the starry abyss. The gaps between them were vast, dozens of meters across—an impossible jump for any Mortal Awakening cultivator.
"This is the first trial?" Shui'er said, her face pale. "We're supposed to fly?"
"Not fly," Ye Xingliu said, his star-flecked eyes alight with understanding. He could feel the intent woven into this place. It wasn't about raw power. It was about application. About embracing the nature of a comet. "We're supposed to fall with style."
He stepped to the edge of their starting platform. He took a deep breath, drawing not on the thin air, but on the boundless stellar energy around him. It flooded his channels, cool and potent. He fell into the Laughing Star stance, but he reversed the principle. Instead of focusing the energy forward into a punch, he focused it down and out, through the soles of his feet.
"Get on," he said to Shui'er, a wild, confident grin on his face.
"On what?" she asked, bewildered.
"My back! And hold on tight!"
Without another word, she leaped, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and her legs around his waist. As she did, Ye Xingliu unleashed the reversed Comet Fist.
There was no punch, only a recoil.
A silent, concussive blast of silver stellar energy erupted from his feet, a miniature supernova that lit up the void. The force was immense, kicking them off the platform like a stone from a sling. They shot across the gap, a human comet trailing shimmering energy, Ye Xingliu laughing with pure, unadulterated joy as the star-wind whipped through his hair.
They landed, stumbling but safe, on the next platform. The impact was solid, but the starlight energy he'd absorbed cushioned the blow.
Shui'er slid off his back, her legs wobbly, her eyes wide. "You... you used your punch... to punch the sky."
"It's not just a fist," Ye Xingliu said, his body humming with power and exhilaration. "It's a philosophy! If the road is a void, you don't just stand at the edge. You laugh, and you kick it in the teeth to get across!"
He looked back at the vast gap they had just crossed, then ahead at the even wider ones to come. The trial was no longer a daunting obstacle. It was a playground.
"Ready for the next one?" he asked, his grin infectious.
Shui'er, her initial fear replaced by a thrilling sense of awe, nodded fiercely. "Just don't spin. I get motion sick."
And so, the Laughing Comet and the daughter of the wind began their traversal of the starry void, propelled by joyous defiance and the explosive recoil of a fist that refused to be bound by gravity.
