Chapter 70 - Chapter 70 - A Blazing Tempest

I blinked a few times in surprise.

"What?! That sounds like an accident waiting to happen, Codex."

[USE ALL KNOWN IGNIS PRINCIPLES]

[ALLOW FLAME TO MOVE THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL SHAPE RATHER THAN AGAINST IT]

[USER MUST GUIDE THE FLAME]

I stared at those words for several seconds.

'Cast an Ignis spell without a spellform.'

At first, the instruction sounded careless. Spellforms existed for a reason. Fireball was a sphere because a sphere held the force within it efficiently. Vector Lance was a line because a sharp line could pierce. Ember Shield was a barrier because a defensive action required a boundary. Implosion compressed because... well, to be honest, I'm still trying to figure that out.

But one thing was clear.

Spellforms made magic safe.

It made them useful.

It allowed them to be repeatable.

And yet—

The flame above my palm shifted again.

Fire did not naturally move as a sphere.

Or a line.

Or a wall.

Or like a compressed point.

All those actions were decisions. Useful ones, of course, but ones that I imposed, despite it having its own tendencies.

I could see clearly.

Fire rose.

Spread.

Curved.

Followed the path guided by air.

I changed pressure and transformed what surrounded it.

I was wrong.

I had been treating the environment as resistance, an obstacle to overcome and overpower with control. Every spell I cast was a match between the shape I wanted and the shape the world kept trying to give the flame.

No wonder there was waste.

No wonder I had stalled.

A good flame burned despite the world preventing it from doing so.

A perfect flame burned with it.

I looked at the Codex display.

"Why didn't you just explain it like that in the beginning?"

[EXPLANATION PROVIDED IN PRIOR FORM]

"No, you said something like environmental resistance, as if I was supposed to understand that cryptic message."

[USER COMPREHENSION: INSUFFICIENT]

I narrowed my eyes.

"Did you just call me an idiot?"

[ASSESSMENT: USER WAS NOT LISTENING]

"That's still not a no."

[ASSESSMENT: ACCURATE]

For a moment, I stared at the text.

Then, despite the heat, the exhaustion, and the irritation, I laughed under my breath.

"Fine," I said. "Maybe this one was my fault."

[CORRECTION: PROBABILITY OF USER FAULT EXCEEDS 90%]

"Don't ruin the moment."

[ACKNOWLEDGED]

I stood slowly.

The little flame above my palm vanished.

No spellform.

No fixed structure.

No Fireball.

No Vector Lance.

No Ember Shield.

No Implosion.

Just Ignis.

In its purest form.

I took a deep breath and let my mind settle.

I thought about everything I had tried tonight and what I had learned.

Fireball had taught me how to release my Aether.

Vector Lance had taught me how to direct it.

Ember Shield had taught me boundary and control.

Implosion, whilst I'm still trying to figure it out, had certainly taught me compression.

Each spell was a fragment of a bigger understanding. Not the whole. Not the source.

I raised my hand toward the centre of the hall.

The room felt different now.

Clear and present.

The air near the ceiling was warmer. The floor held cold. The walls reflected heat differently from the open space between the targets. The old scorch marks affected flow. The suppression arrays hummed faintly, waiting. My breathing moved the air closest to me. My own body heat disrupted the small currents around my wrist.

The world was not passive.

It had never been passive.

I had been too busy ordering the fire to notice what fire was answering back.

I opened my palm.

'Okay. Let's give this a go.'

And released.

Flame erupted from my hand.

Not as a ball, a lance or a shield.

It erupted as a vast spiralling torrent of orange-gold fire, a tempest roaring through the hall as if it were alive. The blaze coiled upon itself in thick bands, twisting forward, upward, and inward all at once. Its outer edges burned crimson-orange, while the core flashed almost white where the pressure tightened.

The fire grasped the room.

No.

It trailed it.

The torrent climbed where heat wanted to rise. It narrowed where the air compressed between stone and target. It widened where the space opened. It curled along currents I had never noticed before, bending through the hall's shape rather than smashing mindlessly against it.

The suppression runes on the walls reacted violently.

Sparks scattered like small blazing stars in the night sky.

The floor blackened beneath the spiral path of the flame.

Heat washed over me in waves, but I did not flinch.

Because for the first time, it did not feel like I was holding the spell together.

I was guiding it, as it was guiding me.

Letting it breathe.

Letting it move.

The vortex filled the hall with a gold, beautiful and catastrophic spiral of flame, vast and extensive that any ordinary student would have mistaken it for a loss of control.

But it was not wild.

And I was in control.

Full control.

Every curve had a purpose.

Every burst of flame had a path

Every surge speaking to me as if it were in the room.

And I understood it.

When the inferno finally finished, it shrank into a final ring of incandescent heat before dissolving into a blaze that drifted slowly through the air.

The training hall became silent.

The far target had not simply shattered. A spiralling path had been burned clean through it. The floor was scorched in a wide helix. The walls smoked faintly. The suppression arrays pulsed as if recovering from shock.

I stood in the centre of it all, my hand still raised, breathing hard.

The Codex appeared, and I don't know how, but I could tell it was looking down at me with a sense of satisfaction.

[COMPREHENSION: 100.0%]

I went still.

[IGNIS ADEPT PRINCIPLE COMPLETED]

[THRESHOLD REACHED]

[ADVANCING TO NEXT TIER]

[CORE STATUS UPDATED]

[TIER: IGNIS MASTER]

For a moment, I didn't move.

The words hung in front of me, quiet and absolute.

'Finally, Ignis Master.'

I had finally crossed the threshold.

Not by forcing more power through my core.

Not by making a bigger Fireball.

Not by sharpening Vector Lance until it became absurdly precise.

But by finally understanding that fire did not exist alone.

It moved through air.

Pressure.

Heat.

Space.

The world.

And I was simply a guide that allowed it to flourish.

Before I could fully process the events that had occurred, another message appeared.

[SPELL EVOLUTION DETECTED]

[IGNIS: FIREBALL HAS EVOLVED]

[NEW SPELL ACQUIRED]

[IGNIS: BLAZING TEMPEST]

I stared at the remains of the scorched spiral engraved across the training hall floor.

The simplest spell.

The one every Ignis user probably learned early and then forgot to respect.

It had evolved.

Because I no longer understood it as a ball of fire thrown forward.

I understood it as a natural order released and given direction through the shape of the world.

For the first time since arriving at Aetherion, fire didn't feel like something I was holding and throwing.

It felt like something I finally understood.

A slow smile touched my face.

Then I looked down at my hand.

"Okay then," I said. "Let's try this with Ventus this time."

The Codex answered immediately.

[VENTUS TRAINING PROTOCOL INITIATED]

[WARNING: USER HAS RECENTLY ACHIEVED CORE ADVANCEMENT]

[WARNING: TRAINING HALL STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY COMPROMISED]

[WARNING: USER JUDGEMENT CURRENTLY QUESTIONABLE]

There was a pause between the messages.

Then, one final line appeared.

[PROCEEDING ANYWAY]
