Chapter 104 - THE NARRATING VOICE

There are moments that do not arrive with noise.

They do not announce themselves, nor do they ask to be remembered.

They simply settle—quietly, gently—into the spaces between days.

Shen Qiyao had once believed his life would remain unchanged.

A shrine at the edge of the grove.

The sound of wind through bamboo.

A presence that spoke only in distant, lingering notes.

It had been enough.

Or perhaps… it had only been all he allowed himself to have.

But somewhere along the passing of uncounted days, something shifted.

Not suddenly.

Not in a way he could name.

A second pair of footsteps on worn wooden floors.

A voice that refused to let silence remain untouched.

Laughter—unexpected, unguarded—echoing where only stillness once lived.

And without realizing it, the quiet he once held so tightly began to change.

It did not disappear.

It made room.

For warmth that lingered a little longer than it should.

For conversations that stretched past nightfall.

For a presence that did not belong to memory… but to the present.

Some things leave without farewell.

Some things arrive without asking.

And sometimes—

without knowing when it happened—

one begins to stay.

Not as a passing shadow.

Not as a guest.

But as something that gently, inevitably… becomes part of what is called home.

The bamboo grove still swayed beneath the same sky.

The shrine still stood, unchanged to any passing eye.

And yet—

something within it had already begun to shift.

Quietly.

Irreversibly.
