Chapter 30 - Chapter 29

Ned remained completely frozen, his finger pointing strictly at the two pairs of fluffy ears that were currently twitching in the afternoon breeze. His brain seemed to be completely stuck as he looked from Nozomi's phone screen back to the black, glossy tails swaying behind Hiro.

"Those are... those are real," Ned finally squeaked out, his voice going incredibly high. "Peter, they have actual, moving tails! Is this an alien thing? Oh my god, can I touch one?"

"No," Hiro said instantly, his smirk widening as he took a quick step backward. "And we aren't exactly regular superheroes. Back home, we're just considered heroes in training. Think of it like a specialized high school class, except our combat drills cause a lot more structural damage."

MJ was the first to get her voice back, though she kept her arms crossed tightly as she stared at the extra parts. "So the whole 'transfer students from Japan' thing is just a diplomatic cover story paid for by whatever massive corporate empire you guys have."

"Exactly," Nozomi cheered, putting her phone away with a giant smile. "Though the school part isn't a total lie. Our mom is really strict about us keeping a normal routine while we establish our operations here. High school is a great place to hide in plain sight."

"Right. Because the two of you are so good at blending in," Peter said, leaning against the rooftop railing. He had a big grin on his face, totally enjoying watching his friends deal with the weirdness. "Hey, Ned, breathe. You're turning a really weird shade of purple."

Ned took a huge, shaking breath. "Peter! You've been hiding fox-people from us?! Since when do you know fox-people?!" [1]

"Since the giant fight against Thanos," Peter explained, waving his hand around. "They were kind of hard to miss, Ned. Hiro was leaving huge craters in the ground, and Nozomi was literally cutting through spaceships. They're on our side."

MJ looked over at Hiro, her eyes narrowing. "And what exactly is your work here in New York? Does it have anything to do with the fact that the city's power grid experienced a massive thermal spike last night?"

Hiro's relaxed smile sharpened just a bit, his ears flattening slightly against his head before popping back up. He shared a quick, silent thought with Nozomi before looking back at MJ. 'She really doesn't miss anything,' he thought, liking how sharp she was.

"We're tracking some weird anomalies," Hiro answered smoothly, keeping his voice light. "New York has been a magnet for energy fluctuations lately, and our gear is specially calibrated to handle big threats. Let's just say we're a little bit of extra backup for the neighborhood."

"A safety net," Peter added, looking at MJ. "Trust me, we can use all the help we can get."

Ned wasn't even listening to the details; his eyes were glued to Nozomi's swaying tails. "This is insane. This is literally like a comic book on our school roof. Do you guys have code names? A secret base?" [1]

Nozomi let out a clear, happy laugh. "We have a fully functional lab, if that makes you feel better. But for now, Midtown High is our main spot during the day."

She flicked her wrist, and with a soft ripple of golden mist, the glamour field snapped back into place. The fluffy ears and black tails disappeared in a split second, making them look like two completely normal teenagers again.

"The bus bell is going to ring in five minutes," Nozomi noted, adjusting the collar of her custom silk blouse. "We should head down before Flash tries to corner Hiro about anime again."

Hiro groaned loudly, adjusting his dark leather jacket as he turned toward the door. "If that kid asks me if I know the creator of Naruto one more time, I'm going to find his locker combination and delete it from the school server."

"Please do," MJ said, a tiny smile finally showing on her face as she walked with them. "He deserves it."

The five of them headed down the stairs, the weird tension completely melting away. Once they got to the front exit, Peter, Ned, and MJ waved goodbye, still whispering furiously among themselves, while Hiro and Nozomi walked the other way.

The walk back to their high-end New York apartment was quiet, but the second the heavy front doors clicked shut behind them, both twins let out a long, synchronized sigh.

With a soft fwoosh, they dropped the illusion. Nozomi's three glossy black tails immediately fluffed out, giving a happy, heavy wag, while her fox ears twitched toward the sound of the air conditioning. Hiro stretched his arms over his head, his own tails uncurling from behind his back as he kicked off his shoes.

"I hate trying to look normal," Hiro complained, instantly throwing off his leather jacket and unbuttoning his tailored shirt. "Pretending to be standard civilians for six hours is pure torture."

"Oh, stop whining," Nozomi teased, floating slightly off the ground as she glided toward the massive kitchen island, her vibrant designer dress shifting around her ankles. "You got to spend all day trading sarcastic remarks with Peter's girlfriend. I'd say you had a great time looking stylish."

"She's sharp, I'll give her that," Hiro chuckled, walking into the living room and face-planting directly into the giant, plush sofa. "But man, I am exhausted. Not even from fighting, just from keeping the glamour field completely stable."

Nozomi grabbed a giant bowl of popcorn and two sodas, using her foot to nudge his legs out of the way so she could sit down next to him. She dumped half the popcorn onto his back. "Move over, lazy bones. It's movie night."

Hiro grumbled, rolling over onto his side and grabbing a handful of popcorn from the bowl. He grabbed the remote and scrolled through the streaming apps until he found a mindless, high-budget action movie. He pressed play, leaning his head back against the cushions.

For a while, the only sound in the apartment was the explosion effects from the TV and the steady crunch of popcorn. The warm, thick pressure of their shared Soul-Flux hummed softly between them, relaxed and perfectly in sync.

"Hey," Nozomi said softly, her tails wrapping around her ankles as she stared at the screen. "It's been a really long time since we were able to just hang out like this. Just the two of us."

Hiro looked over at her, his expression softening. "Yeah. Between the training in the mountains, the dimensional rifts, and then immediately dropping into a literal space war against Thanos... we haven't exactly had a weekend off."

"I missed it," Nozomi admitted, leaning her head against his shoulder. Her fox ears flicked as the TV speaker rattled with another explosion. "Just being normal siblings. Well, as normal as we can be."

"Normal is overrated," Hiro smiled, bumping his shoulder against hers. "Besides, if we were normal, we'd be boring. And you explicitly told me back in the void that the afterlife would be boring. We have a reputation to uphold."

Nozomi's ears perked up instantly, a familiar, wicked little spark lighting up her golden eyes. She sat up straight, turning to face him with a massive, mischievous smirk. "Speaking of not being boring... we've been playing nice for way too long, don't you think?"

Hiro raised an eyebrow, a matching grin slowly spreading across his own face. He tossed a piece of popcorn into the air and caught it in his mouth. "What do you have in mind, big sister?"

"Well," Nozomi purred, her tails swishing with pure excitement. "We have all this money, a hidden lab, and a world full of people who think they know how things work. I think it's time we cause a little bit of controlled chaos."

"I am completely on board," Hiro chuckled, sitting up and rubbing his hands together. "Where do we start? We could manipulate the stock market algorithms, or maybe send anonymous data leaks to the news about secret government projects?"

Nozomi giggled, leaning forward. "Oh, that's small time. Think bigger. Think about a certain one-eyed man who thinks he runs global intelligence from a giant flying helicarrier."

Hiro burst out laughing. "Nick Fury? Oh, man, getting under his skin is way too easy. The guy is so paranoid he probably has a security camera in his toaster."

"Exactly!" Nozomi cheered. "Imagine if we start leaving things in his secure office. No forced entry, no alarms triggered. Just a donut."

"Or better yet," Hiro grinned, his mind instantly racing with ideas. "We bypass S.H.I.E.L.D.'s mainframe and patch directly into his ocular interface. Every time he tries to read a classified file, it just displays a picture of a cute little kitten for exactly three seconds. He'd lose his mind trying to find the virus, and his tech guys would be running diagnostics in circles."

"Yes! And we can leave a silver fox symbol stamped on his desk every time we do it," Nozomi added, clapping her hands together. "He'll create a whole new task force just to hunt down two high schoolers."

"He's going to get so many gray hairs," Hiro laughed, shaking his head. 'This is going to be so much fun,' he thought, the easy, playful bond between them making the upcoming days look brighter than ever.

They spent the rest of the night ignoring the movie completely, leaning over a notebook as they scribbled down increasingly ridiculous ways to drive S.H.I.E.L.D. absolutely crazy, their tails wagging in perfect, chaotic harmony.
