Chapter 253 - Volume 4, Chapter 22: A Joke That Was Not Funny

Inside the cracked, crimson-domed battlefield, the illusion of restraint shattered completely.

Loki stepped forward, his Nephalem aura blazing in a Dual-Aspected storm of light and shadow. He matched Milim move for move, his reconstructed Hephaestus armory clashing against her jet-black dragonoid battle armor in a blinding display of sheer, unyielding force. Every shockwave rattled the mountain roots beneath them, every parry sending white-hot arcs of spatial energy tearing through the enclosed atmosphere.

He was fighting her as an equal. He was meeting her resolve. For a dozen frantic exchanges, he used localized gravity fields to deflect her sweeping kicks, manifesting short Hephaestus blades purely to catch and slide along the edge of her dragonoid claws without cutting back. He pivoted through two devastating lateral strikes, using a localized spatial fold to absorb the pressure before stepping back into her guard. Every impact drove him deep into the ruined stone, but he stood his ground, refusing to retreat a single step.

Yet deep inside his instincts, the ancient habit of deflection remained a dormant, poisonous reflex.

Milim's blue eyes, submerged in crimson dragonoid rage, flashed with a terrifying, absolute intensity. She pivoted on her heel, her wings snapping forward to compress the surrounding air into a localized vacuum. Before Loki could adjust his footing, her right hand drove straight toward his heart—Draconic force compressed so densely that even his layered spatial defenses began failing before contact.

[Warning,] Manas: Loki reported urgently within his mind. [Incoming strike vector bypasses localized gravity cushions. Structural kinetic transfer will exceed survivable limits. Emergency response available: Farce.]

Instinct overrode intent. Survival overrode calculation.

Loki didn't even make a conscious choice. His subconscious mind reached automatically for its most deeply ingrained survival mechanism. He activated Farce.

The moment Farce unleashed its Toon Force, the battlefield's lethal logic buckled beneath absurdity. Milim's lethal strike didn't pierce his chest; instead, the impact landed with a ridiculously loud, rubbery squeak. Her aura-laced fist slid harmlessly off his coat like a wet bar of soap, and the dangerous shockwave that should have flattened a mountain dispersed into a cloud of sparkling, harmless confetti that drifted lazily through the ruined air. The sudden break in physics rippled across the domain floor, turning stone ripples into soft rubber before snapping back into cracked bedrock.

Loki stumbled back, catching his balance. Out of pure reflex, a wide, sheepish grin spread across his face, his lips curving into his familiar, lighthearted smirk.

"Whoa!" Loki chuckled, fanning himself with a scorched hand. "That was way too close! Good thing I brought a squeaky toy to a dragon fight, huh?"

He could not have made a worse mistake.

Milim froze. She stared at the floating confetti drifting past her face, then down at her own trembling, aura-laced palm, and finally up at Loki's smiling face. The air inside the domain didn't just turn cold. The crimson glare in her eyes seemed to collapse inward, leaving her expression hollow and terrifyingly still.

"A joke..." Milim whispered. Her voice was barely a breath, but it carried a terror far more absolute than Drago Nova. "You turned Gaia's pain... into a joke?"

Her rage didn't explode outward this time. It collapsed inward. She stood in suffocating, horrific silence for what felt like an eternity, her entire frame trembling as the grief she had buried for centuries resurfaced, mangled by his levity. The sheer emotional devastation on her face hit Loki, cutting straight through his sheepish grin and freezing the laughter in his throat.

Farce was not morally neutral. An authority that breaks reality by mocking it can save a life, but when deployed against someone's sacred grief, it is an act of profound, agonizing cruelty. In that single, horrific heartbeat, Loki finally understood what his trickster instinct became when he used it at the wrong moment: not a shield, but a wall he could hide behind while someone else was hurting.

The smile died on his face. The smirk vanished completely, replaced by a pale, hollow horror.

Milim surged forward. There was no warning, no spatial displacement wave. Her fist tore through the air, driven by an unadulterated, heartbroken fury that sought to erase the insult from existence.

Loki saw the strike coming.

He consciously suppressed the conceptual authority, refusing to hide behind another punchline.

Crack!

Milim's armored fist struck Loki squarely in the jaw. The unfiltered, brutal force of the blow shattered his cheekbone and sent him flying across the battlefield. He let the blow take him completely, but on pure instinct he twisted in midair, locking the obsidian cube against his abdomen and wrapping a thin spatial sheath around the container alone while leaving his own spine exposed.

He hit the stone wall spine-first. The bedrock shattered into a crater behind him as the shockwave pulverized the stone, but the obsidian box remained perfectly motionless in his embrace, untouched by the impact.

'Container structural integrity holding,' Manas: Loki reported quietly.

The cube gave one faint, rhythmic pulse against his ribs.

He slowly pushed himself out of the rubble. He stood upright, his eyes meeting her hollow gaze with a raw, completely undisguised vulnerability.

"I am not laughing, Milim," Loki said, his voice quiet, raspy, and heavy with absolute truth. "I will never, ever laugh at what you went through. I would never make a joke out of Gaia's pain... or yours. You are my best friend. And I was an idiot."

Milim's fist trembled in the air. For one brief, fragile second, her eyes flickered, the hollow darkness wavering as his words pierced through her anger.

She did not forgive him. The centuries of grief were too deep, the wound too fresh, the anger too immense to be healed by a single sentence. She raised her hand again, her Draconic aura igniting once more, but the strike hesitated—just for a fraction of a heartbeat.
