Chapter 257 - Volume 4, Chapter 26: The Dragon They Saved Together

Inside the translucent frame of the final, sixth white-gold barrier, the corrupted core lashed out like a cornered beast. The razor-sharp maw of pure malice lunged inward, its dark, viscous miasma pressing against the frail, pale emerald light of Gaia's surviving soul core.

"Now, Milim!" Loki shouted, his hands steadying as his spatial authority locked onto the structural nodes of the final seal.

Milim didn't hesitate. At Loki's command, a needle-thin spatial conduit opened through the sixth wall. Milim fed her compressed Draconic current through the opening, burning only where Loki and Manas: Loki marked corruption while avoiding Gaia's surviving spiritual pathways.

Hiss—!

The moment her controlled Draconic current pierced through the conduit, the dark miasma shrieked. The sludge-like corruption boiled and fractured under the blistering, precise heat, black smoke venting outward into the vacuum of the seal.

Yet the corruption fought back. Sensing its impending destruction, the core's deepest, most stubborn knot of malice twisted inward, hardening into a dense, impenetrable shell that actively absorbed Milim's thermal pressure, neutralizing the heat and threatening to crush Gaia's core from within.

"It's resisting!" Milim's breath hitched, her eyes widening in panic as her flames bounced off the hardened mass. "My power isn't enough to burn the center out without harming her soul!"

"Hold the outer pressure!" Loki ordered, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding focus.

His eyes flared. Shifting away from brute-force magical output, Loki reached deep into the authority of Hades, his consciousness weaving through the delicate, shattered spiritual pathways of the dragon's soul to begin the painstaking work of reconstruction.

'Alert,' Manas: Loki reported instantly within his mind. 'Spiritual pathway sector four is severely destabilized. Attempting soul reconstruction through Hades.'

With infinite, meticulous care, Loki used Hades to anchor the drifting spiritual fragments, knitting the frayed soul channels back together thread by thread. As each pathway stabilized, the pale emerald light within the core grew steadier, pushing back against the encroaching dark.

"Milim, clear the upper quadrant now!" Loki commanded, beads of sweat mixing with blood on his brow.

Milim shifted her Draconic current instantly, searing away a fresh layer of exposed miasma. But a cluster of corrupted channels remained tightly tangled around a vital spiritual pathway.

'Stop,' Manas: Loki warned sharply. 'Too close to the core nexus. If you burn through that node without structural support, the soul identity will fracture.'

Milim froze the golden-pink flame less than a finger's breadth from the emerald strand. Hades drew two drifting fragments together, their torn edges aligning precisely beneath Loki's soul authority.

'Connection restored. Identity pattern stable,' Manas: Loki confirmed.

"Now?" Milim asked, her voice tight with tension.

"Now."

Her Draconic current swept past the newly repaired pathway, scorching away the corrupted residue without touching the fragile life beneath it. Milim and Loki locked into a grueling rhythm. She burning away the taint with microscopic precision, he repairing the underlying spiritual architecture line by line, constantly adjusting their timing to match the erratic surges of the dying core.

Yet even after the surrounding corruption was stripped away, the innermost knot refused to yield to conventional thermal destruction.

The reason this was taking so long was because of Loki. He wanted Milim to work hard to save Gaia, that way their relationship would grow stronger.

Keeping Hades locked around Gaia's reconstructed soul pathways, Loki shifted away from brute-force magical output and invoked the smallest possible expression of Toon Force to tap into its fundamental, absurd freedom over physical and conceptual rules. He used it to rewrite the stubborn rule of the corruption's defense.

With a soft, melodic pop like an unbottled spring, the hardened, impenetrable knot of malice suddenly lost its conceptual anchor. The unyielding resistance melted away, transformed instantaneously by the touch of Farce into a harmless, weightless black ribbon that drifted limply inside the bright emerald light of the core.

Milim stared at the ribbon in stunned disbelief for a microsecond. Then, her expression hardened with fierce, unadulterated release.

At Loki's signal, a hand-width aperture opened in the sixth wall. Milim thrust her fingers through before the corruption could react, caught the fluttering black ribbon of corrupted residue, and ripped it apart with her bare fingers, tearing it into nonexistence until every last trace of the ancient corruption vanished into thin air. The aperture snapped shut the instant the last black strand vanished.

Manas: Loki immediately cross-referenced the structural telemetry. 'Spiritual reconstruction complete. Identity coherence stable. Final containment release is safe.'

With a quiet mental command, Loki unlatched the structural nodes of the final wall. The final white-gold wall of Infinite Prison dissolved into harmless white-gold motes.

Inside the cleared, shining space, the pale emerald light pulsed once. Softly, steadily, and with overwhelming warmth.

From the center of the light, something small, delicate, and trembling materialized.

It wasn't a colossal, terrifying monster. It was a tiny, scaled dragon no larger than a housecat, its scales shimmering with a soft, pearl-like emerald hue, its wings folded tightly against its back.

For a breathless second, the tiny creature lay motionless on the fractured bedrock. Then, its head stirred. Two large, luminous eyes opened slowly against the light.

The tiny dragon tilted its head, looked up, and locked eyes with Milim.

A soft, trilling chirp. Ancient, familiar, and filled with bottomless, unconditional affection escaped the small creature's throat.

"Gaia..." Milim choked out, her voice breaking entirely.

She dropped to her knees, her hands trembling as she cupped the tiny dragon and lifted it gently to her chest. The small creature nuzzled frantically against her collarbone, its tail wrapping around her arm with a desperate, binding grip that spanned centuries of loss and return.

Milim buried her face against the dragon's scales, and for the first time since the crisis began, the absolute ruler of the Dragonoid realm stopped trying to be strong. She let out a ragged, shattering sob, holding the reborn life of her dearest companion against her heart as her tears fell fast and free onto the emerald scales.

Loki stepped back quietly, letting the space between them clear. He simply stood a few paces away, his scorched coat and the quiet, unthreatening stillness of his stance framing the distance.

A moment later, a soft rustle broke the sound of Milim's crying.

The tiny, pearl-scaled dragon uncurled slightly from Milim's embrace. Its luminous eyes shifted away from its master, turning toward Loki. It stared at him for a long, silent moment.

Gaia fluttered cautiously onto Loki's shoulder, sniffed the side of his face, and gave one uncertain chirp before remaining there, showing the first flicker of cautious trust.

Loki smiled faintly, raising a hand to lightly stroke the top of the dragon's head.

After a brief, quiet moment of inspection, Gaia tolerated the touch and fluttered back toward Milim, settling once more into the Dragonoid's waiting arms and curling against her chest as though rediscovering a place her soul had remembered long before her body did.

Above them, the first fractures of release spread across the crimson dome. Thin seams of blue sky appeared between the glowing cracks, but the barrier did not collapse yet. Milim remained kneeling with Gaia pressed against her chest, tears still drying across her cheeks, while Loki stood nearby and the sealed world slowly began to open.
