Chapter 21 - Chapter 8.4

The sleeping spell dissipated with the arrival of light. The rays of dawn filtered through the slits in the curtains, breaking the darkness with columns of suspended dust. Janab's eyes opened slowly in the semi-dark room; a single blink was enough to notice Isaiah sitting on the edge of the bed, his elegant silhouette etched against the gloom like a pale moon shining at the height of the night. He remained motionless, hands resting on his knees, his head slightly tilted toward her.

—Finally, you have awakened —his velvety voice anchored her to reality.

The sound had no volume, yet it resonated throughout her body. What she had believed to be a dream now revealed itself as something too tangible: his body, his breath, the very density of his presence. The air around him was colder, compact, as if the temperature had dropped several degrees. It was all evidence of an incomprehensible world.

Janab looked at her own hands, unsure, as if expecting to confirm she was losing her mind. She turned them over, observing the lines of her palms, searching for a mark that was not there. Isaiah, feigning indifference, watched in silence with that irritating calm that always seemed to hide a threat. His eyes did not blink with human frequency; his gaze was absolute, predatory.

The vampire waited with unusual patience. What they both had experienced was a sample of Abyater's power: the evil that exists for the sake of existing. The residual pressure of the demon still weighed in the room, a metallic taste in the depth of his chest. Had Isaiah yielded, the only beneficiary of Janab's death would have been the demon, by claiming her soul. An unnecessary sacrifice... for now. Thus, he was relieved not to have pierced her neck. The thirst was still there, latent, but contained under layers of iron will.

—I will listen to what you have to say —he declared, in a tone that intended to be neutral—, and after that... you may choose another place to stay.

He straightened slightly, the shadow of his body lengthening over the sheets. Janab's face lit up immediately. Tension left her shoulders; her facial muscles relaxed for the first time in days. She dared to look up and found a shadow of a smile on his lips—discreet, but real.

—Thank you so much! —she exclaimed, unable to hide the relief overflowing in her chest.

Her voice came out cracked with emotion. Isaiah stood up and walked toward the door, closing it with an imperceptible gesture. The click of the lock sounded final. He detested any trace of light: for him, a single instant exposed to solar rays was equivalent to brushing against incandescent lava. His skin tingled just at the proximity of daylight.

Resigned, he would allow himself to be trapped in his own cage for the rest of the day. He leaned against the closed wood, seeking the safety of absolute shadow.

Then, Janab gathered her courage and pronounced two names: "Zheir" and "Dan." The echo of those words ignited immediate reflections within Isaiah.

The air stood still. The names floated in the room like activated detonators.

Dan Debellis. A man who descended from his ancient lineage, for whom he had employed countless human resources throughout the years with a single purpose: to free himself from the curse that kept him bound to this earth, his sepulcher. That place where he woke as a being of shadows, condemned never to look at the sun again. Dan's blood was the key, the only valid currency to purchase his definitive death.

The memory of the last descendant of his line, whom he was unable to sacrifice, distracted his attention for an instant. A sweet and delicate image, as fragile as the flowers that always adorned the room of Alyssa, his elder sister. The scent of dried lilacs invaded his memory, an olfactory ghost of withered years.

Isaiah refused to obtain his freedom by offering such pure blood. At that time, he resigned himself to servitude. The decision had cost centuries of additional existence. But time never stops; day after day, his human emotions died away, and instincts began to govern his existence, chaining him to be a predator of life for eternity. Empathy had eroded like stone under water.

Until one day, Dan Debellis was born into the world. A man against whom he would have no weaknesses. An equal who would guarantee his freedom. Someone he had sought since birth, but who had been lost in boundaries unreachable even for a vampire. The trail had gone cold time and again, until today.

And now, thanks to Janab—and the price pacted with Abyater—the final search had just begun. Isaiah opened his eyes in the gloom, and for the first time in centuries, the thirst was not for blood, but for the end.
