Chapter 24 - New Agent of Death

Gangs of Emberlyn Chapter 24 - New Agent of Death

"Easlum?" William asked. "What are you on about?"

"Never mind that," Tim replied. "Just step aside. You are distressed of his death, so you can see us. I doubt you can interact with us though."

Tim took a step forward which triggered something in William as he lifted his right hand up, pointing a finger at Tim

"Skill activated: Nail Flick. Error, no energy used."

From William's pointer which was now in his Felkin form shot out a nail. The nail flew through the air tripling in size before hitting Tim through his shoulder.

"Ow!" he yelled. "Impossible."

Tim fell to his knees as James's eyes were wide with horror.

"How can you interact with us. Even we can't interact," James snarled as he drew a sword from the air. "I guess that explains why we have weapons now, Tim."

Tim stood up as his would had healed. He pulled a sword from thin air itself and pointed it at William.

"You are too dangerous. I don't know how you are able to interact but nature is telling us to get rid of you!"

"Nature, you say," a cold voice said that brought the temperature down twenty degrees.

The three of them turned to have a hooded figure holding onto a rather large scythe. Under his hood was completely dark even the light from the alley. He twirled his scythe before slamming the bladed part into the ground.

"You Reaplums are some of the most annoying abominations I have ever had to deal with," the figure said in that same chilling voice. "Always stealing the souls away from the true afterlife. I am a reaper of nature. You are not."

"I guess we were too slow this time," Tim said. "A reaper has arrived."

"I can see that," James said as he turned his attention to the reaper. "You dare call us abominations. We are nature too."

"Nature cannot come from the prince of darkness," the reaper said before he yanked his scythe out of the ground and rushed at the two Reaplums with a speed that he could not follow with his eyes.

The three clashed, but it looked more like a one-sided massacre as the two Reaplum's heads were chopped clean off. Their heads hit the ground, and their bodies disintegrated.

"New generation," the reaper said, his shoulders slouching as if he were sighing. "If it were the older generation, this fight might have been different."

The reaper turned his head to face William. He hood tilted to the side like he was intrigued at William.

"Interesting," the reaper said. "You're dead."

William's eyes went wide as he heard what the reaper said.

"Dead?" William turned around to look at Jack, but there was no other body there. He turned back around. "How am I dead?"

The reaper didn't answer right away as golden glows started to rise from the Reaplum's bodies. He reached his hand out and all of the souls rushed toward his hand. When they touched it, it looked as if the souls were absorbed into his body. The reaper then turned back around to face William.

"Heart attack," the reaper answered. "If you can't see your body, then it means that you'll be back alive soon," the reaper continued. "It's what we like to call an optical illusion created by the veil. Or a delay."

The reaper paused, but then continued. "Not a delay, you lucky human. You'll be fine. You won't remember anythi—," the reaper paused as it looked at William. "How are you actually able to interact with this space?"

It started to slowly raise its scythe into the air like it was about to strike William.

He started to panic. Is it about to kill me? A lot is going on right now. Souls, a reaper, and whatever Reaplums are. Aren't there rules to this?

"If I'm going to be alive in a moment because my heart attack wasn't lethal," he paused, thinking that he was technically dead, but then quickly continued, "not lethal enough to keep me dead, isn't you killing me a violation of the rules of the dead?" he said, though he was really just pulling at theories he had read on the internet.

The reaper paused. He held his position before he lowered his scythe.

"I guess," the reaper said. "Though you're not exactly natural either. You are radiating something that shouldn't exist. There are others on this planet, unlike the other ten thousand."

"10,000?" William asked.

The reaper ignored him as it continued. "You are not natural, so I guess that rule doesn't apply. You know what, we've gone on long enough without an agent. Maybe…"

The reaper pointed his finger at William and he began to scream in pain. It was only for a moment before it stopped, as his body or soul collapsed.

"Fine," the reaper said. "I will offer you a deal of multiple life times. You have met a reaper who is allowed to do this. In exchange for your life, you will become an agent of death."

"What?" William asked but the reaper continued.

"Your mission will be to figure out the unnatural in this world and eliminate them. In exchange, you and whatever you create will be allowed to live, but under strict observation from us. If you do well or remain loyal, we will give you a helping hand. If you fail through the pain, I, who connected myself to you, will come to collect your life."

"Agent of death?" William asked. "What are you? What is happening? I just want my friend to be alive again." He turned his head around to face Jack.

The reaper threw his scythe into the ground.

"I cannot allow your friend to come back to life," the reaper said. "It is against nature."

William felt sad and wanted to cry, but he couldn't feel any water works coming up.

"Your soul can't cry. I will give you the souls of the fallen in exchange. Use their power to help you at your early stages. Do he have a deal, William Carter?"

William continued to look at Jack but didn't say anything.

"Do we have a deal?" The reaper asked again. "I can request what you want as a reward for your loyalty, but not now."

William spun around and looked at the reaper.

"Will you really do that?" The Felkin asked with excitement in his eyes.

"Three," the reaper started to count. "Two, one."

"Deal," William said. "I just want my friend back.

"We'll see, agent of death" the reaper said as it raised its hand and all the souls that had been collected shot out slamming into William.

"Agh!" William yelled as his eyes opened and he found himself back on Jack's chest.

What? He thought as he felt a pain in his chest.

"You have suffered a heart attack," the system notified him. "The system did it's best to restart your heart. BPM 198. Your skills cannot be activated at this time. System needs a moment to resync with your body."

He turned around but nobody was there

Did I imagine all of that? William thought. My death hallucinations are crazy. I really died of sadness because of you. You really wanted me to join you, didn't you. He thought this as a smile crept onto his face as he turned to look back at Jack.

"I'm going to miss you," William said.

From beyond the veil of the living the reaper was slowly walking up to the pair.

"Time to collect your soul," the reaper said, but the next thing that it knew was that its body had been torn apart.

"My soul," another voice said as it was standing over William and the dead body of Jack. "It's funny, I guess the older we get, the stronger we get. Even strong enough to break a reaper.

The body of the reaper came back together and it stood up.

"Reaplum," the reaper said.

"I would love to play with you," the old generation Reaplum said. "But I have a job to do."

It reached its hand into Jack, pulling out a glowing ball of light with the face of Jack on the ball. He looked scared. Then the Reaplums ran out faster than the reaper could keep up with his eyes.

The reaper's head twisted its head like it was cracking its head before it vanished.

Back in the realm of the living, William was just lying on Jack's body as the system started again.

"The system is changing. The system is analyzing what it has entered your body. The system nano‑tech is trying to recognize so it can start to edit your genes. System is guessing what you have acquired. You have been blessed with souls of the dead. A message from the great beyond. Analyzing."

Was I not hallucinating? William thought this as he sat up.

"The system has knowledge that is not for the user to know until certain conditions have been met. This has been placed by the creator. Conditions fulfilled. Accessing knowledge. Reading. Reading. Reading. Based on the knowledge granted by your creator, you have become an agent of death. The terms of you being an agent are unknown. The system suggests you dig into your memory."

"Well, that confirms that," William muttered. "I am apparently an agent."

"The system advises that you inform it out loud what the conditions are. Recording on."

William paused, but he decided to repeat what the reaper said.

"Thank you. The Felkin system will use this knowledge for future reference."

"That's it?" William asked.

The system did not answer.

"So much yapping for nothing!" William yelled.

"Error," the system said. "Error for death. The bio suit was able to mess with the 12 souls that are in your body. High level ability acquired.
