For several seconds after the machine spoke, nobody moved.
The synchronization cathedral remained illuminated by a softer light now, no longer the blinding white dominance that once defined the system's presence. The city feeds continued flowing across the towers surrounding them, showing districts slowly recovering from the blackout. Emergency crews were restoring damaged sectors. Communication lines were reconnecting. People were helping each other rebuild what had nearly been lost.
Yet Elena could not focus on any of it.
Her mind remained trapped on the final word the machine had spoken.
Contingency.
The word felt wrong.
Dangerous.
Like something unfinished.
Marcus appeared to be thinking the same thing. He stood frozen before the convergence terminal, his eyes moving rapidly across the restored data streams.

The color drained from it completely.
