Chapter 25 — The Fall of the Array

Kael POV / Central Chamber to Outer Deck

The Ascension Array was collapsing.

Corridors twisted and groaned, chunks of metal tore loose, and sparks rained down like fireflies from a burning sky. The Core's detonation had left the station unstable, every second threatening to rip it apart entirely.

Kael pushed himself to his knees, armor smoking and flickering, muscles trembling with exhaustion. Mira knelt beside him, steadying him, while Eris helped 47-B and the other freed children to their feet.

"We have to move! NOW!" Eris shouted over the roaring alarms. "The whole place is falling!"

Kael nodded. Every step was agony, the armor struggling to hold together. But there was no choice. Not with the children. Not with 47-B at his side.

He caught sight of the outer deck hatch — the only way to escape. But movement from the shadows froze him.

Varek.

He emerged, different. Black lightning-like veins crawled beneath his skin, remnants of the Core's energy still coursing through him. His eyes glowed faintly — storm-colored, predatory.

"Impressive," Varek said, voice eerily calm amid chaos. "You destroyed the Core. But did you destroy me?"

Kael braced himself. The armor responded instantly, tendrils of red energy snapping outward.

"You won't touch them," Kael growled.

Varek smiled. "The children? They're irrelevant. Ascension is inevitable."

Before Kael could respond, Varek surged forward, faster than humanly possible. Black strands of energy, remnants of the Core, lashed out like living shadows. Kael met him with armored fists. The collision exploded in a shockwave that rattled the chamber, throwing debris in every direction.

"Run!" Mira screamed, grabbing 47-B.

Kael shook his head. "I'm not leaving without them!"

Varek laughed, twisting violently, flinging Kael across the chamber. The armor cracked on impact. He staggered, vision swimming.

"Kael Renn," Varek hissed, electricity arcing from his veins, "you cannot win what you were never meant to control!"

Kael forced himself upright, drawing the last of PRIME's energy into his fists. Red light flared, molten and alive.

"I don't care what I was meant to be. I choose who I am!"

He lunged forward, colliding with Varek in a violent clash. Bodies slammed against walls. Sparks flew. Corridors twisted and groaned under the pressure.

Mira and Eris guided the children toward the hatch as the station shuddered violently. Pieces of the Ascension Array were already falling into the void.

Kael gritted his teeth, channeling every ounce of strength. With one final surge, he threw Varek backward into a fractured wall. The Dominion commander slid across the metal but disappeared into the shadows, alive but wounded.

Kael staggered to the outer deck. Mira knelt beside him, hands trembling but steady. "We made it… we survived," she whispered.

47-B clung to her, pale and trembling, eyes wide.

Kael looked back at the ruins of the Ascension Array. The Core was gone. Varek had survived, but the immediate threat was over.

He clenched his fists, armor pulsing faintly along his arms. "We'll finish this," he said quietly.

Mira squeezed his hand. "Together."

47-B lifted his head. "Kael… thank you."

Kael gave a faint smile. "No. Thank you… for choosing yourself."

Outside, stars stretched across the void — infinite, cold, and indifferent. But inside the battered Solace, Kael Renn felt something he hadn't in a long time: hope.
