Chapter 638 - FIFA Online

The sun over Dubai did not simply shine; it hammered the earth.

Even at four in the afternoon, the heat radiating off the practice pitches at the ICC Academy felt like standing in front of an open furnace. The air was thick, heavy, and still. But inside the high chain-link fences, the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad was grinding.

The reality of the 2020 bio-bubble was sterile and unrelenting. Every player was tested constantly. Hand sanitizer stations dotted the boundary ropes. There were no fans leaning over the fences, no local net bowlers brought in to help, and no media cameras tracking their every move. It was just the squad, the coaching staff, and desert heat.

Siddanth Deva stood at the back of the net, ignoring the sweat dripping from the brim of his helmet.

"Hold your shape, Samad," Deva instructed, his voice carrying sharply over the crack of the ball hitting the bat.

Abdul Samad, the twenty-year-old power hitter from Jammu and Kashmir, had just tried to launch a length delivery into orbit, lost his balance, and sliced it heavily into the side netting. He looked frustrated, adjusting his gloves.

Deva walked down the pitch.

"You're trying to generate power from your shoulders," Deva said, tapping the toe of his bat against the synthetic turf. "You don't need to muscle it. The pitches here are slow. If you swing too hard, you'll beat the ball. Widen your base. Let the ball come to you, and use your core to pivot. Again."

Samad nodded, resetting his stance. The bowling machine fired. This time, Samad held his shape, waiting a fraction of a second longer, and met the ball with a clean, echoing crack. The ball sailed straight and true.

"Better," Deva said. He turned and walked out of the net, pointing a finger at Shubman Gill, who was waiting his turn. "Gill. You're up. Trust your hands against Rashid today. Don't over-commit the front foot, he's bowling quicker through the air."

"Got it, skip," Gill nodded, adjusting his helmet as he walked past.

Deva moved away from the batting cages, grabbing a towel from a cooler box and wiping down his face. He walked over to the bowling nets, where the fast bowlers were rotating.

He stood silently behind the umpire's position, watching Bhuvneshwar Kumar at the top of his mark.

Bhuvi started his run-up. His rhythm was smooth, his approach to the crease effortless. He bounded into his delivery stride, snapping his wrist and sending the ball nipping sharply away from the left-handed Abhishek Sharma.

"Good shape, Bhuvi!" someone yelled from the sidelines.

Bhuvi turned around, walking back to his mark, breathing heavily. He reached down, casually rubbing his right thigh, stretching his hip slightly before grabbing the ball for the next delivery.

Deva saw it.

His eidetic memory instantly flashed to the original timeline of the 2020 IPL. He remembered Bhuvneshwar Kumar pulling up short during a match early in the tournament, clutching his thigh. A severe hip injury that ruled their premier strike bowler out of the entire season, crippling the team's bowling attack.

"Bhuvi," Deva called out. "Stop."

Bhuvi paused at the top of his mark, looking back in surprise. "Skip?"

Deva ducked under the netting and walked down the pitch. "Give me the ball."

Bhuvi tossed it over. He looked confused, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Was my wrist dropping?"

"Your wrist is fine," Deva said, stopping right in front of the bowler. He looked at Bhuvi's right hip. "Your landing is heavy. You're overstriding. You're trying to force the pace off the back foot."

"Just trying to hit the deck hard," Bhuvi reasoned, rolling his shoulder. "The bounce is low here."

"I know," Deva said. "But I also know your right hip is tight. And your thigh is feeling heavy."

Bhuvi blinked, caught off guard. He had told the physio about a slight niggle that morning, but he hadn't mentioned it to the captain. "It's just a bit stiff. It's nothing. I can push through it."

"No, you won't," Deva stated flatly. "I don't need you bowling at a hundred and forty today, Bhuvi. I need you bowling in the final overs in November. We are playing a two-month tournament in intense heat with almost zero turnaround time between matches. If you tear that muscle next week, this bowling attack loses its anchor."

"Shorten your run-up by two steps," Deva ordered. "Bowl at eighty percent effort today. Focus on your swing, not your pace. Manage your workload. Do not push that hip."

Bhuvi let out a slow breath, his shoulders dropping slightly in relief. In an environment where players constantly pushed themselves to the breaking point just to prove their fitness, having the captain order him to slow down was a massive weight lifted.

"Understood, Sid," Bhuvi nodded.

"Good. Take five minutes and stretch it out before your next over," Deva said, tossing the ball back to him.

---

By eight o'clock that evening, the reality of the bio-bubble fully settled over the team.

The squad was back at the designated luxury hotel in Dubai. Under normal touring circumstances, the lobby would be buzzing. Players would be congregating in the restaurants, heading out to the malls, or gathering in a single room to order room service and talk.

In the 2020 bubble, none of that was allowed.

Every player was confined to their own individual room. There was no mingling in the corridors. Dinners were delivered in sanitized containers left outside the doors.

Deva sat in his hotel room, staring at the muted television. He had just finished a video call with Krithika and the twins.

Deva picked up his phone and opened the Flash Messenger app. He navigated to the official SRH squad group chat.

Deva:Consoles on. Headsets on. Everyone in the digital lobby in ten minutes. We are playing FIFA.

The notifications instantly flooded the screen.

Shubman Gill:Yes! Finally.

Abhishek Sharma:I call striker. Gill is trash in the box.

Shubman Gill:I will literally bench you.

David Warner:Mate, it's 8:30 PM. I'm watching Netflix. Leave me alone.

Deva:Log on, David. Or you're opening the batting with the water boy tomorrow.

David Warner:Loading up the console now, skip.

Kane Williamson:Hello everyone. I haven't played this game very much. How do I join the lobby?

Rashid Khan:Kane bhai, just click the invite I send you.

Kane Williamson:Thank you, Rashid.

Ten minutes later, Deva put on his gaming headset and adjusted the microphone. The voice comms connected.

It was chaos.

Fifteen different voices were talking over each other simultaneously. Background noises, heavy breathing into microphones, and the screech of terrible headset feedback echoed in Deva's ears.

"Who is breathing like Darth Vader into the mic?!" Warner's voice yelled over the static. "Mute your mic if you're eating!"

"Sorry, sorry, that's me," Abdul Samad's voice chimed in, followed by the sound of crunching chips.

"Mate, how do I pick a team?" Shane Watson's voice crackled. "The screen is just showing me a bunch of boots. Why am I looking at shoes?"

"Watto, you're in the customization menu," Deva said calmly. "Back out. Hit circle."

"I don't have a circle, I have a red B button," Dale Steyn shouted from his own room.

"You're on an Xbox, Dale, the buttons are different," Arjun Tendulkar laughed.

"Alright, listen up," Deva commanded, his voice easily cutting through the noise. "We are playing Pro Clubs. 5v5. The rest of you spectate and rotate in for the next match. It's Team Deva against Team Warner."

"Oh, you're dead, mate," Warner instantly trash-talked. "I'm going to run circles around you."

"We'll see," Deva replied dryly. "Team Deva: Me, Gill, Kane, Rashid, and Samad."

"Wait, I get the youngsters?" Warner protested. "Abhishek and Arjun? They just hold the sprint button and run out of bounds!"

"Hey!" Abhishek protested. "I know how to cross!"

"Team Warner: You, Abhishek, Arjun, Watto, and Steyn," Deva finalized. "Load in."

The match loaded. The digital players rendered on the pitch.

From the very first whistle, the voice chat devolved into a screaming match.

The youngsters, Gill, Samad, Abhishek, and Arjun, played FIFA like every other twenty-year-old on the planet. They were "sweats." They didn't pass. They simply acquired the ball and immediately began spamming the right thumbstick, attempting complex step-overs, rainbow flicks, and elasticos, usually resulting in them losing possession instantly.

"Abhishek, pass the ball!" Warner screamed into his mic as Abhishek tried to dribble past three defenders. "You're not Messi, mate! Pass it!"

"I had the angle!" Abhishek argued as Deva calmly tackled his digital avatar and took the ball.

"You're trash, Abhi," Gill mocked from the other team. "Look at this spacing. Deva bhai, I'm making a run down the wing. Through ball! Through ball!"

Deva, playing as a holding midfielder, didn't use skill moves. He was holding his defensive shape and executing perfectly timed, simple passes. He lofted a ball directly into Gill's path.

Gill received the ball, immediately attempted a fake shot, and ran straight into Shane Watson's digital defender.

"Yeah! Have that!" Watson yelled triumphantly. "Wait, where is my player going? Why is he running backward?"

"Watto, you're controlling the center-back, stop pulling him out of position!" Steyn yelled.

"I don't know what I'm doing!" Watson laughed hysterically. "I'm just holding the trigger!"

On the other side of the pitch, Kane Williamson was playing the game same way he played in a Test match. He didn't sprint unnecessarily. He just jogged around the midfield, completing short passes.

"David, I think your defender is out of position," Kane said mildly over the comms.

Before Warner could react, Kane tapped the pass button, threading a slow, rolling ball right between Warner's digital legs to Samad, who immediately smashed it into the top corner of the net.

TEAM DEVA 1 - 0 TEAM WARNER.

"YES!" Samad screamed into the mic.

"Oh, sorry David," Kane's voice came through the headset. "I didn't mean to put it through your legs. That was lucky."

"IT'S A VIDEO GAME, KANE!" Warner exploded, his Australian accent getting thicker by the second. "STOP APOLOGIZING WHEN YOU SCORE ON ME!"

Deva was sitting on his hotel bed, silently laughing. "Good vision, Kane. Keep exploiting Warner's side. He's just an R2 merchant. He holds sprint and prays."

"I am not an R2 merchant!" Warner yelled, immediately kicking off and holding the sprint button, running in a straight line toward Deva's defense.

Deva simply stepped in front of him, tapped the tackle button, and took the ball without breaking a sweat.

"Lag!" Warner shouted instantly. "That is absolute lag! I pressed pass!"

"You didn't press pass, Warner mama, you ran straight into a wall," Deva fired back smoothly.

"Rashid, what are you doing?" Gill asked, noticing Rashid Khan's player spinning in continuous, tight circles near the corner flag.

"My controller is broken!" Rashid yelled in a panic. "My player won't stop spinning! How do I stop spinning?"

"You have controller drift, Rash," Arjun laughed. "Just unplug it!"

"If I unplug it, I disappear!"

The first half ended 1-0. The voice chat during halftime was a tactical war room devoid of actual tactics.

"Abhishek, if you try one more rainbow flick inside our own penalty box, You are out of the real-life playing eleven," Warner threatened.

"I was trying to clear it with flair!" Abhishek defended himself.

"Steyn, you haven't touched the ball once," Watson pointed out.

"Because nobody is passing to me!" Steyn argued. "I am standing wide open on the left wing!"

"Dale, you picked a goalkeeper build," Deva noted dryly. "You're playing left wing with a goalkeeper. You have twenty pace."

The entire lobby erupted into laughter.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?!" Steyn shouted, laughing at his own mistake.

The second half commenced. Warner's team, fueled by rage and terrible positioning, actually managed to string an attack together.

Arjun passed to Abhishek, who miraculously resisted the urge to do a skill move and passed it to Warner. Warner, holding the sprint button for dear life, smashed a shot from thirty yards out. It deflected off Rashid's continuously spinning player and rolled into the net.

TEAM DEVA 1 - 1 TEAM WARNER.

"HAVE THAT!" Warner roared into the mic. "TACTICAL GENIUS! THAT'S HOW WE PLAY!"

"It deflected off a man who is literally stuck in a circle, David," Kane pointed out softly.

"A goal is a goal, Kane!"

As the in-game clock ticked past the 80th minute, the tension in the digital lobby spiked. The banter turned frantic.

"Mark him! Mark him!" Gill yelled as Abhishek pushed down the wing.

"I'm out of stamina!" Samad panicked.

Deva stayed calm, reading the play. He intercepted a desperate cross from Arjun, instantly triggering a counter-attack. "Gill. Make the run."

Deva launched a flawless through ball over the top of Watson's confused defender. Gill latched onto it, sprinting toward the penalty box. Warner's defender was trying to catch up, closing the angle to the goal.

The in-game clock hit 90 minutes.

Gill was one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Everyone in the voice chat held their breath. Gill raised his foot to shoot.

But instead of shooting, Gill executed the most hated, toxic, try-hard move in FIFA history. He didn't shoot. He pressed the pass button, sweating it across the face of the empty goal to a unmarked teammate making a late run into the box.

The unmarked teammate was Kane Williamson.

Kane's player gently, politely tapped the ball into the empty net.

TEAM DEVA 2 - 1 TEAM WARNER.

The voice chat went nuclear.

"NOOOOOO!" Warner screamed, his voice distorting the microphone. "SWEATY! THAT IS A SWEATY GOAL! GILL YOU COWARD, SHOOT THE BALL!"

"IT'S CALLED THE EXTRA PASS, MAMA!" Gill shrieked back, laughing hysterically. "IT'S HIGH IQ GAMEPLAY!"

"You passed it across an empty net! Have some honor!" Steyn yelled, defending his captain.

"I apologize again, David," Kane said calmly over the chaos. "Shubman gave me a very good pass. It felt rude not to tap it in."

"I am throwing my PlayStation out the window," Warner declared. "I'm done. This game is rigged."

"Good game, boys," Deva chuckled, unable to wipe the grin off his face. "Warner, you can transfer fifty bucks to Kane's account for the coaching lesson."

"I'm going to sleep. I hate all of you," Warner muttered, though he was clearly laughing as he disconnected from the lobby.

The rest of the players lingered in the voice chat for another ten minutes, the adrenaline of the match slowly fading. They traded a few more jokes, made plans for a rematch the following night, and slowly logged off one by one.

"Goodnight, skip," Arjun said.

"Night, Arjun. Get some rest," Deva replied.

Deva finally pulled the headset off, dropping it onto the desk.

The hotel room was silent again.

He picked up his phone, sending a quick goodnight text to Krithika, and went to sleep.
