Chapter 537 - The Vow and The Storm

The morning traffic of Mumbai buzzed loudly outside the window of a third-floor apartment in Andheri. It was January 21st.

Inside the apartment, three friends sat around a small wooden table in the living room. Empty tea cups and a plate of half-eaten biscuits rested between them. It was a Sunday morning, and the usual weekend debate was in full swing.

Karan, holding his phone, looked highly annoyed. He was a massive, dedicated fan of Sushant Singh Rajput.

"You guys just don't see it," Karan argued, setting his phone face down on the table. "Sushant is a pure, raw talent. He doesn't just act; he completely transforms. Look at Kai Po Che. Look at how he played Dhoni. He literally copied Dhoni's exact walking style. But the Bollywood nepotism system doesn't let him grow."

Ritvik, sitting across from him, rolled his eyes. Ritvik was a die-hard Ranbir Kapoor fan.

"Karan, stop blaming everything on nepotism," Ritvik countered, leaning back in his chair. "Sushant is good, but Ranbir is a natural. Ranbir doesn't need to try hard. His expressions do all the work. He is the best actor of our generation."

"Ranbir?" Karan scoffed loudly. "Are you serious? Ranbir Kapoor plays the exact same role in every single movie. He is always a sad, confused, rich boy who goes on a trip to find himself. It is the same soppy character with a different name. Sushant actually takes risks."

Samar, the third friend, shook his head. He was a massive Ranveer Singh fan.

"You both are wrong," Samar interrupted, tapping the table. "Acting is about screen presence. Ranveer Singh has unmatched energy. When he comes on the screen, you cannot look at anyone else. He dominates the frame. Sushant is too quiet. He doesn't have that mass appeal."

"Energy is not acting, Samar," Karan fired back immediately. "Jumping around and shouting loudly is just being loud. Sushant speaks with his eyes. He is just waiting for the right director to give him a massive, pan-India project. The big studios just steal all the good scripts and give them to the star kids."

"Who is going to give him a pan-India project?" Ritvik asked dismissively. "The big directors have their own camps."

"Siddanth Deva," Karan stated proudly.

Ritvik and Samar paused.

"Siddanth Deva is producing the Ramayana animation," Karan reminded them. "And he cast Sushant as Lakshmana. He chose him over every single star kid in Mumbai. Deva knows talent."

"It is just voice acting, Karan," Samar pointed out. "It is an animated movie. It is not like we will actually see him on screen fighting."

Karan opened his mouth to argue further.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed loudly against the wooden table.

Karan picked it up. He looked at the lock screen. His eyes widened.

"Shut up," Karan ordered his friends. His voice dropped entirely.

"What happened?" Ritvik asked, confused by the sudden change in tone.

"It is 10:00 AM," Karan said, staring at his screen. "Nexus Entertainment just posted a video. Today is Sushant's birthday. It is the character teaser for Lakshmana."

Ritvik and Samar immediately leaned forward. The entire country had been waiting for the next glimpse of the Ramayana project.

Karan did not watch it on his small phone screen. He swiped his phone and cast the video directly to the large television mounted on the living room wall.

"Watch this," Karan said, turning the volume up on the remote.

The three friends stared at the television screen.

---

The screen went completely black.

Silence filled the living room. The background noise of the Mumbai traffic outside seemed to fade away.

A single, deep breath echoed through the television speakers.

Then, the slow, agonizing creak of a heavy wooden bowstring being drawn back tight.

Hold.

Release.

The sharp whistle of an arrow cut through the darkness.

A distant, solid wooden impact echoed.

The black screen faded into a visual.

It was a lonely, empty training ground surrounded by tall trees. The first, pale light of dawn barely touched the dirt.

A young boy, a prince, stood alone. He held a simple wooden bow.

The camera angle was tight. Only his hands were visible. His grip was steady.

He released another arrow.

The camera cut to the target. Bullseye.

The boy did not cheer. He did not smile. Without a single word, he walked down the dirt path to the target. He pulled the arrow free from the wood. He returned to his mark.

He drew again.

Again.

And again.

There was no applause. There was no teacher correcting his stance. There were no spectators watching his skill. There was only absolute, unbroken discipline.

A deep, commanding voiceover began to play over the scene.

"A warrior is not shaped upon the battlefield..."

The voice paused, letting the silence hang.

"...he is shaped long before he ever steps onto one."

The scene began to shift. The years began to pass in a seamless, fluid transition.

The child grew taller. The simple wooden bow was replaced by a heavier, carved weapon.

The targets grew farther away.

Summer arrived. Dust blew across the dry ground.

He drew the arrow. Bullseye.

Monsoon arrived. Heavy rain lashed across the muddy training ground. The wind blew hard. The target swayed wildly back and forth on its ropes.

He drew the arrow. Bullseye.

Lakshmana quietly walked forward and moved the target even farther away.

Winter arrived. A thick, cold mist covered the earth, making it hard to see.

He drew the arrow. Bullseye.

He made the challenge harder.

Spring arrived. Pink flower petals drifted gently through the air, catching the morning light.

He drew the arrow.

The arrow flew. It passed cleanly and perfectly through the center of a tiny wooden ring suspended from a high branch.

He drew again. He increased the distance.

No one asked him to push harder. He simply refused to remain where he already stood.

The voiceover returned.

"The gifted seek victory..."

A pause.

"...the disciplined seek mastery."

The training grew harsher. It moved beyond standard archery.

Heavy clay pots swung violently from tree branches in the wind.

Arrow. Bullseye. The pot shattered into pieces.

Tiny brass bells swayed upon long, thin ropes in the distance.

Arrow. The arrow cut the rope cleanly in half. The rope snapped. The bell remained completely untouched, falling silently to the ground.

A single, dry leaf fell slowly from a high branch.

Arrow. The leaf was pinned gently against the trunk of the tree before it could touch the earth.

The scene shifted to total darkness.

The training ground was empty. Only a few burning torches remained, casting flickering orange light over the dirt.

Lakshmana closed his eyes.

He stood perfectly still. He listened.

The sound design filled the room. The rustling of the leaves in the wind. The faint chirping of insects. The crackle of the torches.

The bowstring tightened.

Release.

A distant, unseen target shattered in the darkness.

He opened his eyes.

There was no pride on his face. There was no smile of satisfaction. There was only another arrow drawn smoothly from the quiver.

The background music slowly faded away. Only silence remained.

Thick, dark clouds gathered rapidly in the sky above. Thunder rolled heavily across the heavens.

Rain began to fall.

Then, the storm arrived.

It was a violent, raging storm. The wind tore through the training ground. Wooden targets collapsed into the mud. The burning torches were extinguished instantly. Heavy branches cracked and fell from the trees.

The grounds emptied. The guards and servants ran for cover. Everyone left.

Lakshmana remained.

He stood in the pouring rain. He drew his bow.

The wet bowstring snapped with a sharp crack.

Silence.

He did not yell. He did not throw the bow down in anger.

He simply knelt in the mud. He opened a small pouch, removed a fresh string. He carefully, methodically restrung the heavy bow.

His movements never hurried. They never faltered. He never complained.

He stood back up. He drew again.

Lightning flashed across the dark sky, illuminating the ground for a split second. Thunder shook the earth. Rain crashed relentlessly against him.

Arrow. Bullseye.

Another. Bullseye.

Another. Bullseye.

The storm grew stronger, raging around him.

His resolve grew quieter, entirely undisturbed by the chaos.

The deep voiceover returned.

"The blazing sun could not weary him..."

Arrow.

"The darkest night could not slow him..."

Arrow.

"The fiercest storm could not bend him..."

Arrow.

"...for the strongest bows..."

The heavy wood of the bow creaked under the strain.

"...are held by the steadiest hands."

The storm slowly passed. The heavy rain faded into a light drizzle, and then stopped entirely.

Morning returned. Golden, warm sunlight broke through the dark clouds, hitting the wet ground. Drops of water fell slowly from the green leaves.

Everything became still.

A single, green leaf drifted gently through the calm air.

Lakshmana closed his eyes. He listened. The entire world around him disappeared.

His fingers tightened upon the bowstring.

The camera angle finally changed. It started at the muddy ground. It slowly rose.

It showed his feet, planted firmly in the earth. It showed his heavy, soaked traditional robes. It showed his strong hands gripping the wood. It showed the bow, pulled back to its limit. It showed the steel tip of the arrow.

It showed his broad shoulders. It showed his sharp jaw.

It showed his eyes, locked onto the target with terrifying focus.

For the very first time in the entire teaser, the camera moved to show his face.

It was Sushant Singh Rajput.

The digital rendering of his face was flawless. The wet hair stuck to his forehead. The texture of his skin looked incredibly real. But it was his expression that commanded the screen.

There was no confusion. There was no sadness. There was only a calm, fierce, unshaken focus.

He reached full draw.

The final narration played over the silent, held moment.

"Some legends are remembered..."

Silence.

"...for the kingdoms they ruled."

The bow creaked slightly.

"Some..."

Silence.

"...for the victories they claimed."

A heartbeat echoed.

"But the greatest among them..."

The camera slowly pushed in, zooming close toward Lakshmana's unwavering, intense eyes.

Silence.

"...are remembered..."

Another heavy heartbeat.

"...for the vow..."

The string tightened one final, agonizing fraction of an inch.

"...they never broke."

Lakshmana released the string.

The arrow tore through the air.

The screen cut to black instantly.

The impact of the arrow was never shown visually. It was only heard. A deep, heavy, satisfying wooden strike echoed into the silence.

A single, clear temple bell rang out.

The title card appeared in sharp, golden text against the black background.

LAKSHMANA

The video ended. The related videos grid popped up on the television screen.

---

Inside the Mumbai apartment, nobody moved.

Ritvik and Samar sat still on the sofa. Their eyes were wide, staring at the black television screen. The intensity of the teaser, the breathtaking quality of the animation, and the commanding presence of the character had completely silenced their earlier arguments.

Ritvik slowly put his tea cup down on the table. It made a small clinking sound.

"Okay," Rahul whispered, shaking his head slowly. "That was... that was intense."

Samar leaned back, running a hand through his hair. "The storm scene. The rain hitting his face. He didn't even flinch. He just restrung the bow. That did not feel like an animated movie. It felt like watching a real warrior."

Karan sat back in his chair. He slowly crossed his arms over his chest. He looked at Ritvik and Samar.

A smug smile spread across Karan's face.

"Tell me again," Karan said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. "Tell me again how he doesn't have screen presence. Did you see his eyes at the end?"

Ritvik let out a long breath. "I admit it. He looked incredible. The seriousness on his face... it was perfect for Lakshmana. Deva actually gave him a role where he looks dangerous."

"Play it again," Samar demanded, grabbing the remote. "I want to watch the part where he cuts the rope and leaves the bell untouched. The detail is insane."

Karan hit replay on his phone. He leaned back, entirely vindicated.

While the three friends replayed the video in their living room, the rest of the country was doing the same thing.

The internet exploded. The hashtag #Lakshmana and #SushantSinghRajput instantly claimed the top trending spots on Twitter and Vibe.
