Chapter 331 - IPL 2014 - 5

[COMMENTARY BOX - MATCH START]

Ravi Shastri:"The umpires, Richard Illingworth and Vineet Kulkarni, are making their way out to the center. The Uppal crowd is absolutely deafening. Out come the Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Siddanth Deva, taking their positions in the field. Lendl Simmons and Rohit Sharma are the two opening batsmen for the Mumbai Indians."

Harsha Bhogle:"It's going to be a fascinating contest. The pitch looks hard. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has the new white ball. Two slips in place. We are ready for play."

Siddanth stood at mid-off, tapping his hands together. He looked towards Bhuvneshwar at the top of his mark and nodded.

0.1 Bhuvneshwar started his run-up. He hit the crease, a smooth, rhythmic action, and delivered the first ball. It pitched on a good length around off stump and jagged away late. Simmons played inside the line, the ball whistling past the outside edge. Naman Ojha collected it cleanly behind the stumps.

"Good start, Bhuvi!" Siddanth called out.

0.2 Bhuvneshwar ran in. This one was pitched slightly fuller on middle stump. Simmons pushed forward defensively, presenting a straight bat. The ball rolled back down the pitch to the bowler.

0.3 Bhuvneshwar delivered it on a back of a length outside off. Simmons rocked onto his back foot and punched it toward cover. Karn Sharma moved swiftly to his right, bent down, and fielded it cleanly. No run.

0.4 Bhuvneshwar pitched it up, aiming for the pads. Simmons flicked his wrists. The ball went straight to Kane Williamson at mid-wicket.

0.5 Bhuvneshwar changed his line, bowling a fraction wide of off stump. Simmons slashed hard. The ball took a thick outside edge and flew over the slips down to third man. Amit Mishra jogged across to cut it off. They ran a single. Mumbai Indians were off the mark.

0.6 Rohit Sharma took the strike. Bhuvneshwar bowled a tight in-swinger on middle and leg. Rohit tucked it neatly off his hips to square leg, but couldn't beat the fielder. No run.

Ravi Shastri:"A tidy first over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Just one run off it. Steyn to take the other new ball."

Dale Steyn stood at the top of his mark at the pavilion end. Siddanth moved to short cover.

1.1 Steyn steamed in. It was a searing 145 kmph delivery, pitched back of a length on middle stump. Simmons hopped and defended it awkwardly down to the pitch.

1.2 Steyn bowled it fuller outside off. Simmons leaned into the drive. The ball raced through the covers. Siddanth gave chase, diving full stretch to pull the ball back just inside the boundary rope. They ran two.

1.3 Steyn banged it in short. Simmons swayed out of the line, dropping his hands. The ball sailed harmlessly over his head into Ojha's gloves.

1.4 A fiery yorker aimed at the base of off stump. Simmons brought his bat down just in time, jamming the ball out toward point. No run.

1.5 Steyn pushed the length back, slanting it across the right-hander. Simmons swung wildly and missed.

1.6 Steyn aimed for the top of off stump. Simmons guided it softly toward third man for a single.

Over the next four overs of the powerplay, Steyn and Bhuvneshwar kept things incredibly tight. Bhuvneshwar's swing and Steyn's raw pace offered very little room for the Mumbai openers to free their arms. At the end of the fourth over, the score was 22 for 0.

Bhuvneshwar started his third over.

4.1 A length ball on off stump to Simmons. Simmons stepped out and lofted it over mid-off for a boundary.

4.2 Bhuvneshwar pulled his length back slightly. Simmons tried to pull but mistimed it to mid-wicket.

4.3 Bhuvneshwar bowled a perfectly disguised knuckleball. It dipped late. Simmons went through with his shot too early, spooning the ball high into the night sky toward mid-on. Siddanth positioned himself underneath it, kept his eyes locked on the white leather, and took a comfortable reverse-cup catch.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Harsha Bhogle:"And there's the breakthrough! The knuckleball does the trick. Simmons completely deceived by the lack of pace, and the captain makes no mistake. MI are 26 for 1."

Ambati Rayudu walked out to bat at number three. He took his guard.

4.4 A length ball on middle stump. Rayudu defended solidly.

4.5 Bhuvneshwar went wide of the crease, angling it in. Rayudu flicked it to square leg for a single.

4.6 Rohit faced a full delivery on the pads and clipped it away for two runs through mid-wicket.

Siddanth took the ball for the final over of the powerplay. He marked his run-up.

5.1 Siddanth bowled a sharp, back-of-a-length delivery outside off. Rohit punched it straight to point.

5.2 Siddanth pushed it fuller, aiming at the toes. Rohit dug it out to mid-on.

5.3 Siddanth dropped it short and wide. Rohit cut it fiercely behind point for a boundary.

5.4 Siddanth corrected his line, bringing it back onto the stumps. Rohit defended.

5.5 Siddanth bowled a slower ball off the back of his hand. Rohit picked it early and waited, pushing it into the gap at cover for a single.

5.6 Rayudu faced his first ball from Siddanth. It was an express delivery, clocked at 148 kmph, tailing in sharply. Rayudu managed to get an inside edge onto his pads. The powerplay ended with Mumbai at 38 for 1.

Siddanth immediately brought the spinners into the attack. Amit Mishra tossed the ball up, inviting the drive. Over the next four overs, Mishra and Karn Sharma bowled in tandem. The pitch was starting to offer a slight grip.

In the ninth over, Karn Sharma bowled a quicker one outside off.

8.1 Rayudu stepped out, trying to clear long-off, but mistimed it completely. The ball went straight up. David Warner, stationed at long-off, settled under it and took the catch.

Kieron Pollard walked out to the middle. The score was 54 for 2.

Mishra continued. He bowled a flighted leg-break to Pollard. Pollard leaned forward and defended. The spinners kept the scoring rate in check, forcing Rohit and Pollard to rely on singles and twos.

Before the fifteenth over Siddanth was waiting for the batter to change his gloves.

As the DJ pumped music through the stadium speakers between overs, a familiar, high-energy beat echoed through the arena. The speakers blared the iconic lyrics, "Balapam patti bhama ollo, a aa i ee nerchukunta! Yerra chokka yesukunta, ninne pelli chesukunta!" The crowd instantly recognized the massive hit from the Venkatesh movie Bobbili Raja, and the cheering amplified.

Siddanth glanced up towards the VIP boxes. He spotted actor Venkatesh sitting in the front row, wearing a Sunrisers button up shirt. Siddanth smiled, looked directly at the VIP box, and quickly executed Venkatesh's signature dance step—the classic two-handed index finger point and shoulder shimmy.

The stadium cameras caught the movement perfectly, flashing it onto the giant screen. The thirty-nine thousand fans erupted into an absolute frenzy of noise.

Up in the VIP box, Venkatesh saw it on the screen, laughed out loud, stood up, and performed the exact same step back towards Siddanth before giving him a round of applause. The crowd roared even louder.

The umpire signaled for play to resume. Siddanth jogged back to his bowling mark.

14.1 Siddanth to Pollard. It was a fast, full delivery on middle stump. Pollard dug it out back to the bowler.

14.2 Siddanth pitched it short. Pollard pulled it powerfully through mid-wicket for a boundary.

14.3 Siddanth went wide outside off stump, taking the pace off. Pollard swung hard and missed entirely.

14.4 A perfect yorker on middle stump. Pollard squeezed it out to point for a quick single.

14.5 Rohit on strike. Siddanth bowled a good length delivery on off stump. Rohit steered it down to third man for a single.

14.6 Siddanth bowled a heavy ball that skidded off the pitch. Pollard tried to play it across the line, missed, and was struck high on the thigh pad. The over ended.

The final five overs saw Mumbai accelerate. Rohit Sharma found his timing, hitting Karn Sharma for two consecutive sixes in the sixteenth over. Steyn returned for the seventeenth.

16.1 Steyn delivered a searing yorker. Rohit got his bat down just in time, digging it out to fine leg for a single.

16.2 Pollard swung wildly at a length delivery outside off and edged it past the keeper for a boundary.

16.3 A slower bouncer. Pollard was early on the pull shot, top-edging it. The ball flew high in the air towards deep square leg. Shikhar Dhawan ran in from the boundary and took a safe catch. MI were 122 for 3.

Corey Anderson walked in. Steyn finished his over with three tight deliveries, giving away only two more singles.

Bhuvneshwar bowled the eighteenth over, mixing his knuckleballs with wide yorkers. He conceded just eight runs.

Siddanth bowled the nineteenth over.

18.1 Rohit stepped out and drove him inside-out over extra cover for a spectacular boundary.

18.2 Siddanth followed him down the leg side with a short ball. Rohit pulled it to deep square leg for a single.

18.3 Anderson faced a wide yorker. He couldn't get any bat on it.

18.4 Siddanth bowled a slower ball on middle stump. Anderson slogged it over mid-wicket for a massive six.

18.5 Siddanth fired a 150 kmph yorker straight at the toes. Anderson completely missed it. The ball crashed into the base of the middle stump.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ravi Shastri:"BOWLED HIM! Absolute sheer pace from Siddanth Deva! You miss, I hit. The middle stump goes for a walk. A crucial wicket at this stage of the innings."

Aditya Tare walked out.

18.6 Siddanth bowled a sharp bouncer. Tare ducked under it. Dot ball.

Steyn bowled the final over.

19.1 Rohit Sharma hit a boundary off the first ball.

19.2 Rohit took two runs.

19.3 Rohit scored a single.

19.4 Tare hit a streaky boundary.

19.5 Steyn executed a perfect yorker for a single.

19.6 Another perfect yorker yielded only one run.

The Mumbai Indians finished their innings at 165 for 4.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad players jogged off the field. In the dressing room, Tom Moody stood by the whiteboard.

"166 is a competitive total on this pitch," Moody said, addressing the squad as they hydrated. "The ball is coming on nicely, but the spinners got some grip in the middle overs. We need a solid powerplay. Don't throw your wickets away early. Build the partnerships."

Siddanth took off his bowling spikes. "The dew is starting to settle," he observed to Warner. "The ball will skid in the second half. If we get through the first six overs without losing more than one wicket, we chase this easily."

Warner nodded, fastening his pads. "I'll take the pace, Skip. I'll get us going."

The umpires walked back out to the middle. The Mumbai Indians team formed a huddle near the pitch. David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan walked out to open the batting for SRH. Lasith Malinga was handed the new ball.

Malinga marked his unique, kissing-the-ball run-up.

0.1 Malinga slung the ball in full, aimed at the toes. Dhawan flicked it off his pads down to fine leg for a single.

0.2 Warner on strike. Malinga bowled a back-of-a-length delivery outside off. Warner tapped it into the off-side and yelled, "Wait." No run.

0.3 Malinga aimed for the base of off stump. Warner brought his bat down, jamming it out toward point.

0.4 Malinga pitched it up slightly. Warner leaned in and drove it crisply through the covers for the first boundary of the innings.

0.5 A slower ball on middle stump. Warner pushed it to mid-on for a quick single.

0.6 Dhawan faced a low full toss on the pads. He flicked it beautifully behind square leg for a single.

COMMENTARY BOX - OVER 1

Harsha Bhogle:"Seven runs off the first over. A positive start for the Sunrisers."

Zaheer Khan took the ball from the other end. He started with a slip in place.

1.1 Zaheer angled the ball across the left-handed Dhawan. It pitched on a good length and moved away. Dhawan pushed at it tentatively and missed.

1.2 Zaheer bowled the exact same line and length. Dhawan tried to drive it through the off-side. The ball took a thick outside edge and flew straight into the hands of Rohit Sharma at first slip.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ravi Shastri:"EDGED AND TAKEN! Brilliant bowling from Zaheer Khan. He set him up perfectly. Dhawan is gone early, and the Mumbai Indians have the breakthrough they needed!"

Kane Williamson walked out to bat at number three. SRH were 10 for 1.

1.3 Zaheer bowled on a good length on middle stump. Williamson presented a straight bat and defended it back down the pitch.

1.4 Zaheer pitched it slightly fuller outside off. Williamson let it go through to the keeper.

1.5 Zaheer brought the ball back in sharply. Williamson was trapped on the crease, the ball striking him on the front pad. The Mumbai Indians went up in a massive appeal. The umpire raised his finger. Williamson reviewed it immediately. The ball-tracking showed it was clipping the top of leg stump. Umpire's call. Williamson had to walk back.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Harsha Bhogle:"Oh, that is a massive blow! Two wickets in the over for Zaheer Khan. The Sunrisers are suddenly under immense pressure here at 10 for 2."

Siddanth Deva walked out to the middle. The stadium erupted into a deafening roar, chanting his name. He walked down the pitch, tapped the surface with his bat, and took his guard.

1.6 Zaheer pitched it on a good length outside off stump, looking for another edge. Siddanth watched it closely and left it alone.

Malinga bowled the third over to Warner. It was a tight over, yielding only four singles.

Zaheer started the fourth over. Siddanth was on strike.

3.1 Zaheer bowled a length delivery angling across. Siddanth stepped forward and punched it smoothly through the covers. The timing was exquisite. The ball raced to the boundary.

3.2 Zaheer dragged his length back. Siddanth went onto his back foot and defended it solidly to point.

3.6 Warner defended a good length delivery. The score moved to 22 for 2.

Over the next few overs, Siddanth and Warner completely shut shop. They took no unnecessary risks, focusing entirely on rotating the strike. They pushed the ball into the gaps, ran hard between the wickets, and stabilized the innings.

Corey Anderson and Harbhajan Singh were brought into the attack after the powerplay. The pitch was definitely offering grip to Harbhajan.

---

[COMMENTARY BOX - OVER 10]

Ravi Shastri:"We are at the halfway mark of the chase. SRH are 72 for 2. Siddanth and Warner have rebuilt this innings beautifully after that double blow from Zaheer Khan."

Harsha Bhogle:"They are rotating the strike perfectly, Ravi. Not taking undue risks, just waiting for the bad balls. It's a very clinical approach, but the required run rate is creeping up towards nine an over. They will need to accelerate soon."

The partnership grew steadily into the middle overs. In the twelfth over, Siddanth drove a full delivery down to long-on for a single, bringing up a well-constructed half-century. The Uppal crowd rose to their feet in applause. Siddanth simply raised his bat towards the cheering fans and the SRH dugout with a small smile, and quickly put his helmet back on to resume focus on the chase.

Harsha Bhogle:"There it is. A very composed, responsible fifty from the captain under pressure."

By the end of the twelfth over, the score was 88 for 2. The required run rate was climbing, but they had wickets in hand.

Corey Anderson bowled the thirteenth over.

12.2 Anderson bowled a length delivery on middle stump. Warner heaved it over mid-wicket for a massive six. The crowd roared.

[COMMENTARY BOX - WICKET]

Ravi Shastri:"He's gone! Anderson strikes back immediately! Warner perishes trying to clear the ropes again. An excellent partnership comes to an end. SRH are 98 for 3."

Ravi Shastri:"HE FINISHES IT IN STYLE! Siddanth Deva wins it for the Sunrisers! What a clinical chase from the captain! He didn't even need the last three balls. The Uppal crowd goes wild, their team remains unbeaten at home!"

Harsha Bhogle:"A masterclass in pacing an innings. He came in when they were two down for nothing, rebuilt with Warner, and then accelerated flawlessly at the death. An unbeaten 92 to take his team home."

Siddanth took off his helmet and raised his bat to the crowd, completely unfazed by the tension that had just concluded. Naman Ojha ran down the pitch and hugged him. The Mumbai Indians players walked over, shaking hands. Rohit Sharma patted Siddanth on the back with a wry smile.

[POST-MATCH PRESENTATION]

The presentation area was set up near the boundary rope. Ravi Shastri stood with the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, what a fantastic finish to the first home game for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. To wrap up the proceedings, let's call upon the captain of the victorious team and tonight's Man of the Match, Siddanth Deva."

Siddanth walked up to the podium, wearing a fresh SRH training shirt.

Ravi Shastri:"Siddanth, an exceptional innings under pressure. When you walked in, it was 10 for 2. Did you feel the heat of the required run rate at any point?"

"Not really, Ravi bhai," Siddanth replied calmly. "The pitch was excellent for batting once the ball got a little older. Losing Shikhar and Kane early wasn't ideal, but Davey and I just focused on batting out the overs. We knew if we took it deep, the dew would make it difficult for their bowlers to grip the ball."

Ravi Shastri:"You seem to read the game like a book. The rotation of the bowlers in the first innings was spot on. And the way you paced your own innings—you barely played a false shot."

"It's just about sticking to the basics," Siddanth shrugged slightly. "The bowlers did a fantastic job keeping them under 170. Bhuvi was brilliant up front, and Mishy bhai controlled the middle phase perfectly. As for my batting, the plan was just to anchor the innings and let the other guys play around me. I just happened to be there at the end."

Ravi Shastri:"Well, you're wearing the Orange Cap, your team is at the top of the table, and the crowd here absolutely adores you. Congratulations on the win, and here is your Man of the Match award."

"Thank you," Siddanth smiled, accepting the trophy to another roar from the stadium.
