Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Return of the Wandering Spirit

The world beyond the Whispering Peaks felt smaller.

Ten years of silence had sharpened Lin Feng's senses beyond mortal measure. Every gust of wind carried meaning; every drop of rain whispered a secret. Even the earth beneath his feet seemed to pulse in rhythm with his breath.

When he looked at the sky, it no longer felt distant — it felt alive.

He walked slowly, the mountain path crumbling beneath his steps, his aura restrained yet immense. The lightning within him hummed softly, docile but potent, like a dragon coiled in slumber.

His golden gourd hung at his side, pulsing faintly with the rhythm of his qi. It had grown with him — now containing not mere brew, but condensed spiritual lightning, a liquid storm forged from a decade of trials.

Ten years of quiet, Jin Jue murmured. Do you even recognize the world you're returning to?

Lin Feng's voice was calm. The world changes. My path doesn't.

And what if the world resists you again?

He paused, glancing up as distant thunder rolled across the clouds. Then I'll make it yield.

The Lower Plains — Scarlet Veil Territory

Once, the Scarlet Veil Sect had been a minor faction tucked between mountains.

Now it sprawled across the horizon — a kingdom of crimson stone and spirit flame.

Their banners hung from city walls, their disciples patrolled roads once belonging to free cultivators. The air was thick with spiritual pressure and fear.

In a small market town at the sect's border, whispers filled the streets.

"They say Patriarch Xue Mo's breaking into late Core Formation soon," one merchant said.

"Pah," another scoffed, lowering his voice. "Rumor is, even the heavens don't cross him now. Did you hear? The wandering cultivator Lin Feng—dead ten years past—challenged him once and vanished."

The first laughed. "Then the heavens took pity on him. No one survives Xue Mo's wrath."

A sudden gust swept through the market, scattering dust and leaves.

A man in gray robes stepped past them — silent, his aura unreadable.

The merchants blinked, startled. There was something… off about him. The air seemed heavier, and the light dimmed slightly where he walked.

They didn't know his name, but their instincts screamed that they should bow.

Lin Feng didn't stop.

His gaze flicked briefly toward the sky — his divine sense spreading quietly through the air like ripples in still water.

In an instant, the entire town unfolded in his mind — every heartbeat, every flicker of qi. And beyond that, further still, he could feel the distant pulse of the Scarlet Veil Sect — vast, dark, and seething like a sleeping serpent.

So much blood energy, Mo Xuan growled. They've turned cultivation into slaughter.

Then the storm comes for them, Lin Feng said quietly.

The Foothills of Bloodmoon Cliff

Night fell.

Lightning flickered faintly across the distant peaks, and Lin Feng walked until the path ended at a wide clearing overlooking the Scarlet Veil stronghold.

From here, he could see the fortress carved into the cliffside — thousands of torches glowing like veins of fire.

He exhaled slowly, steadying his qi.

Every pulse of energy in his body felt honed, patient — no longer wild and chaotic.

For a long while, he simply stood there, the wind tugging at his robes. Then, quietly, he drew his sword.

A faint hum filled the air — not of metal, but of lightning recognizing its master.

The sword shone faintly gold, engraved with the same runes that lined his body.

He whispered, "Heavenrend Arc — Silent Perfection."

The blade moved once.

There was no sound.

No flash.

But a heartbeat later, the entire cliffside trembled.

From the fortress below, a hundred torches flickered out simultaneously.

Guards shouted in confusion. Alarms rang through the valley.

"An intruder—someone's outside the barrier!"

Lin Feng sheathed his sword slowly, his expression calm.

You're announcing your return? Jin Jue asked.

No, Lin Feng said, eyes glowing faintly. I'm reminding them I was never gone.

He stepped back into the shadows, vanishing as scarlet-robed disciples flooded the gates.

Scarlet Veil Sect — The Inner Hall

Crimson lanterns burned above the marble floor. The air smelled faintly of blood and spirit incense.

Patriarch Xue Mo sat upon his black jade throne, a smirk tugging at his lips.

"Lin Feng…" he murmured, the name tasting strange after a decade of silence. "I wondered when you'd crawl back from the dust."

He turned toward a robed elder kneeling beside him. "How many did we lose?"

"Forty guards, Patriarch. Their cores shattered from within. We… we found no wounds."

"No wounds?" Xue Mo's voice was almost amused.

The elder nodded nervously. "It was as if their spirits simply… broke."

The Patriarch's smile widened. "So the storm still remembers how to whisper."

He stood, his crimson robe trailing behind him. "Very well. Summon the Envoys. Begin the blood hunt."

Far Beneath the Scarlet Veil Sect

Deep below the fortress, sealed behind seven barriers and buried chambers, lay a place few knew existed.

A cavern vast as a cathedral, lit by the red glow of suspended spirit crystals. The air shimmered faintly with power — old, suffocating, and absolute.

At the center of this chamber sat a man — or perhaps something more.

His hair was white as ash, his robes plain but unstained, and around him swirled a faint crimson mist. His eyes remained closed, yet each breath he took made the air ripple.

When Lin Feng's sword strike reached the fortress above, one of the hanging crystals cracked.

The man's eyes opened.

Twin orbs of dark crimson light burned in the gloom.

"…Ten years," he said softly, his voice smooth but heavy with age. "And already, the balance stirs again."

He rose slowly, robes fluttering though no wind blew. The crimson mist condensed around him, forming faint, ghostly sigils that hovered near his shoulders.

A servant appeared, trembling. "M–Master, the Patriarch has begun mobilization. Shall I—"

"Tell Xue Mo nothing," the man interrupted, his tone calm, almost gentle. "He believes himself sovereign. Let him play the fool."

He turned his gaze upward, toward the surface.

"Lin Feng…" His voice deepened, resonant. "I remember your name. You carry the scent of the storm — the mark of the ancient lightning inheritance."

He smiled faintly. "How interesting."

The air around him shimmered, bending under spiritual pressure far beyond the mortal scale.

His presence alone made the spirit crystals hum violently, their light dimming as if in submission.

Core Formation Realm, the servant whispered in awe.

The man — the sect's hidden true master — stepped forward, his aura condensing into a narrow spear of crimson light.

"Let the Patriarch chase shadows," he murmured. "I will hunt the truth."

He raised his hand, and a single crimson feather appeared between his fingers — a tracking talisman infused with his spiritual mark.

"Let us see what kind of storm dares walk beneath my sky."

The feather disintegrated, vanishing into the ether — its trail racing toward the mountains where Lin Feng stood.

The man smiled, eyes glowing brighter.

"The hunt begins."
