The Elder Council had gathered once again. Everyone sat around a round table. This time there was a very wild discussion going on in the council with everyone shouting.
Voices rose and fell as different opinions clashed loudly. The debate was simple. "What should we do with Konoha after they are weakened? Break the alliance and attack them or support them in their difficult time?"
"It is the perfect time to take revenge against Konoha. We could take revenge on all the Suna shinobi who died at the hands of Konoha shinobi during the previous wars. It would finally be our time to defeat Konoha," someone said eagerly, slamming his hand on the table.
"It's not just about revenge. It would be very beneficial to us too. We can get a lot of land. Fertile land and grow our crops on our own. Our people would no longer face hunger. We would not have to beg other nations for lower prices on food," someone else said with passion in his voice. The idea of gaining territory excited many elders who had dreamed of making Suna stronger and richer for many years.
"It would not be an easy thing to take out Konoha even though it is weakened. Let us not forget that Konoha still has the Three Sannin, the Third Hokage, and their infamous clans," someone argued back, trying to bring reason to the discussion.
The speaker pointed out that attacking now could lead to heavy losses for Suna as well which they could not afford after the successive great shinobi wars.
Someone countered,"The fourth Hokage, their strongest combat force is dead. Their jinchuriki is dead. They lost so many of their jonins and even lower ranked shinobi. I would argue to say that Suna is now as strong as Konoha if not more. We have Lady Chiyo who can take the third Hokage down despite their ages."
Chiyo glared at him,"Oi, are you called me old? But it doesn't matter, Hiruzen is called the professor and the current god of shinobi for a reason. I might be able to holding him for some time but I am no match for him."
The same elder said,"We could have Shota Aizawa support you. The professor's prowess in ninjutsu would mean nothing under his gaze. Lady Pakura can fight Jiraiya of the sanin. Lord fourth can deal with Tsunade of the Sanin and if we manage to bring back Sasori, he can take out Orochimaru."
Shota wanted to tell the elder that there was zero chance of any of them able to kill any of their targets. The sanins and third Hokage were strong and the only one who stood a chance against their opponent was Sasori against Orochimaru.
And that was only because Shota now knew that Sasori had Sakumo's puppet with him.
Someone else said, "Are we going to go back on the peace deal that we made with Konoha? Would that not make us look like opportunistic fools for the rest of the world? No one would ever trust us again."
Chiyo shouted loudly, "I say we slaughter Konoha when it is weak. We should be allying ourselves with Kumo and Kiri. Even Onoki, seeing three villages attacking a weakened Konoha, would join in. Konoha would be fully destroyed."
Everyone looked at her eager expression. Everyone knew that she hated Konoha a lot. Her voice carried years of pain and anger from past wars. The room fell into a brief silence as people considered her strong words. Chiyo had lost much in the conflicts with Konoha, and her desire for revenge was clear to all.
Shota finally spoke up. He was a new member of the council and someone who did not have much power politically in the village.
But everyone in the council was trying to cozy up to him and please him. Why? Because he had the power to prosecute them if he so wished. Everyone knew that every elder had some corruption in them, of course no one was a traitor like Elder Daigo. But they all still wanted to stay in Shota's good graces. Thus when Shota suggested something, they immediately agreed or nodded along with him.
"Would it not be better to take advantage of Konoha by allying with them?" Shota suggested calmly. "We can tell them that we could help fight Kiri together, who already is hell bent on getting their revenge. And they can deal with the rest of the village. Of course, in return they would have to give us a lot of concessions to please us."
"I second him," one elder said quickly.
"I agree," another added.
"Very well, fine," more voices joined in.
Finally, Rasa, after seeing the majority decision, made his announcement. "Raven... I mean Jonin Shota, I ask you to go to Konoha to have a talk with them and give some help. I would also leave it to you to negotiate with them."
It was weird for the Kazekage to ask someone before giving them a mission, but he had to do so.
He had to ask him since Raven now had the right to accept or reject whatever mission he wanted. He had the full right to select the missions that he wanted.
The Daimyo had added this term to prevent the higher-ups of the village from sending Shota on missions that would kill him and thus destroy the obstacle standing between them and uncontrolled power.
Shota thought whether he should go or not and then agreed. In fact, he knew that he could take advantage of the visit to get himself a power up. "Very well, for the village I will go," Shota said resolutely, but internally he was smiling greedily.
The trip to Konoha could open many doors, and Shota was ready to make the most of it.
The council chamber slowly emptied as the meeting came to an end.
