The hospital room felt smaller now that the "nurse" had finished her rounds. Kendella sat in the silence, her eyes fixed on the steady rise and fall of Jae-Hyun's chest. He was in deep sleep.
Outside the door, the world was moving. The D'Angelo machine was in full effect. Every ten minutes, a guard would pass the small glass window.
The door opened with a click.
The woman entered, no longer carrying a syringe. She carried a tray with a glass of water and a small plate of toast. She didn't look at Jae-Hyun this time. She looked directly at Kendella.
"You haven't moved in three hours," the woman said. Her tone was flat—not quite warm, but steady. "If you faint, I have two patients to deal with instead of one. Drink."
Kendella took the water, her hands still trembling. "He hasn't moved. Is he supposed to be this still?"
"Yes."
She paused, turning her body toward Kendella.
"I heard the guards talking," the woman continued. "They say you're moving back to an estate tonight."
