Ned walked over slowly and sat down on the bench. Sophie gently rested her head on his shoulder.
The two of them sat close together. He covered her hand with his, blending the coolness of the night breeze with familiar warmth.
"I told Mommy that I'm marrying you tomorrow, and that I will be happy."
Ned stayed silent. He slowly interlaced their fingers one by one until they were tightly clasped together, fitting perfectly.
"If Mommy can see us," his voice was deep and solemn, "she will definitely be at ease, because I love you so much."
Sophie buried her face gently into his shoulder. Her tears fell silently, soaking his shoulder.
Ned didn't move. He simply held her hand tightly in quiet comfort.
The moon slowly rose above the treetops, bathing the entire garden in a faint, clear glow.
The white candle had burned out. The flame flickered once more, then went out silently.
