Chapter 266 - Chapter 42: Sanctuary in the Shadows, Part1

Part 1: The Sanctuary on the Horizon

The long, agonizing night wore on, but the silence of the village had completely ruptured. By the early hours of the morning, the conflict across the sector had reached a violent boiling point.

Border guard squads and elite frontline shinobi, rushed back from the perimeter walls, surged into the district in force. What had started as a chaotic, localized ambush had transformed into a full-scale battlefield. High above the rooftops, wind-infused blades carved through smoke, and heavy earth barriers slammed up from the cobblestones to cut off enemy escape routes. The Hunters, who had spent the first hours freely terrorizing civilians and pressing into residential quarters, suddenly found the hunter-prey dynamic inverted. Boxed in from multiple flanks by disciplined shinobi formations, the invaders were forced onto the absolute defensive, retreating deeper into the shadow-drenched alleyways.

Near the burning remnants of Red Bowl, the pavement was scorched black and littered with shattered stone.

Shisui ducked beneath a sweeping blade, drove his kunai into a Hunter's flank, and kicked the man backward into a senior's waiting strike. Sweat and soot smeared Shisui's face as he caught his breath, his sharp eyes frantically scanning the chaotic thoroughfare. Hours had passed since the ambush began, yet the frontlines remained choked with smoke and clashing weapons.

"They're falling back toward the outer wall!" a senior shouted, parrying a stray projectile. "Shisui, we need to regroup with the sector command!"

"Where are the kids?!" Shisui demanded, his voice hoarse over the ringing alarms. "Has anyone gotten word from the administrative shelters?!"

Before the senior could answer, a central police captain pushed through the frontline smoke, his face dark with panic as he barked orders to a surrounding squad.

"Check the underground bunkers again! Sector four! Sector seven!" the captain shouted.

An officer sprinted up, gasping for air. "Captain! The special squad that picked up the three Academy children near Red Bowl... none of them checked in at the primary or secondary shelters!"

Shisui froze, his blood instantly running cold. He strode over, grabbing the officer by his vest. "What do you mean they didn't check in?!"

The captain pulled out a sector map, his hands trembling slightly as he cross-referenced the squad logs. "We just finished auditing the evacuation corridors. That unit... their reported transit vector didn't head toward the central bunkers at all. They bypassed the sector perimeter entirely and steered down the unmapped warehouse districts near the old east border."

The officer's eyes widened in realization. "That's... that's not an official evacuation route. There are no shelters in that quadrant."

A suffocating silence fell over the group. The truth hit like a physical blow: the escort hadn't been an emergency rescue unit. The triplets hadn't been led to safety. They had been abducted in plain sight under the cover of the chaos.

Standing on the edge of the police perimeter, Akari caught every single word.

Her heart slammed against her ribs. Her breath hitched in her throat as the picture came into terrifying focus—Haruto, Kaito, and Ayame, walking willingly into the dark alongside men who meant to destroy them.

Without waiting for an order, without saying a word to the command unit, Akari whirled on her heel and sprinted into the dark.

She pushed her legs to their absolute limit, her boots slamming violently against the cobblestones as she broke away from the main thoroughfare. Panic clawed at her chest, tightening her throat until every breath burned like fire. She bypassed the barricades, tearing down the empty, silent streets leading toward the old warehouse district.

"Please... please hold on," she prayed silently, her chest heaving as she turned blind corner after blind corner. "Just stay alive..."

The wail of the village alarms faded into the distance, replaced by a quiet, eerie stillness as she plunged deeper into the abandoned sector. The houses grew sparser, the alleys narrower, locked in total darkness.
