Part 8 – The Letter Opens
Ayame slowly moved closer to Haruto and sat beside him again.
She didn't touch him yet.
Just stayed close.
"...Haruto."
"...Look at me."
A pause.
Haruto slowly lifted his head.
His eyes were red.
But he still didn't say anything.
Ayame's expression softened.
"...You don't have to talk right now."
Silence again.
Kaito slowly lowered himself to sit too.
But this time…
He didn't sit in front of Haruto like before.
He sat slightly to the side.
Less aggressive.
More careful.
Then, quietly…
"...Haruto."
"...I'm sorry."
No shouting.
No pressure.
Just that.
Silence lingered in the room.
Haruto still hadn't moved properly.
His fingers were still curled around the letter, but the grip was weaker now.
Kaito sat slightly to the side, his hands resting on his knees.
He kept looking away.
"...I shouldn't have shouted."
His voice was low.
Ayame didn't respond immediately.
She was watching Haruto.
Haruto's breathing was still uneven.
Ayame slowly spoke.
"...Haruto."
No answer.
She leaned slightly closer.
"...Can you breathe with me?"
A pause.
Haruto didn't respond at first.
But after a moment…
His breathing slowly started matching hers.
In…
Out…
In…
Out…
Kaito noticed it and stayed quiet.
For the first time that night, he wasn't interrupting.
Ayame gently continued.
"...You're safe now."
Another pause.
Haruto's shoulders stopped shaking as much.
The grip on the letter loosened slightly again.
Kaito finally spoke, quietly.
"...I didn't realize you…"
He stopped.
Struggled.
Then continued.
"...I didn't realize it was like this for you."
Silence.
Haruto still didn't look at him.
But his voice came out again.
Small.
Broken.
"...I didn't want you to know."
That hit both of them.
Ayame lowered her eyes.
Kaito's fists clenched slightly… then relaxed.
"...Why?"
Haruto didn't answer immediately.
The room waited.
Haruto remained silent.
His eyes stayed fixed on the crumpled letter in his hands.
For a long time...
No one spoke.
Then...
Haruto let out a shaky breath.
"...I..."
His fingers slowly loosened around the paper.
Without saying another word...
He held the letter out toward Ayame.
Ayame looked down at it.
Then back at Haruto.
"...Are you sure?"
Haruto gave the faintest nod.
"...Read it."
His voice was barely a whisper.
Ayame accepted the letter carefully, almost as if she were afraid it would fall apart.
She gently unfolded the creased paper.
The hall fell silent once again.
Only the soft rustling of the letter could be heard.
Her eyes slowly moved from one line...
To the next.
With every sentence...
Her expression changed.
Confusion...
Understanding...
Then sadness.
She paused for a brief moment before continuing.
Kaito watched quietly.
He had already read it.
But seeing Ayame's reaction...
Made him realize all over again how much Haruto had been carrying alone.
Eventually...
Ayame reached the final line.
She slowly lowered the letter.
Her hands trembled ever so slightly.
She looked at Haruto.
He still couldn't bring himself to meet her eyes.
A long silence followed.
Then...
In a voice no louder than a whisper...
She asked,
"...Why didn't you tell us?"
The question lingered in the room.
Neither of the brothers spoke.
Haruto slowly closed his eyes.
His grip tightened around the edge of the sofa.
He knew...
There was no hiding anymore.
Haruto remained silent.
His breathing had finally begun to steady.
Very slowly...
He opened his eyes.
"...Because..."
His voice was still weak.
"...I was scared."
Neither Ayame nor Kaito interrupted.
"...Four years ago..."
"...when I disappeared..."
"...I was captured by hunters."
A long pause.
"...Most of them..."
"...were exactly what everyone says they are."
"Cold."
"Brutal."
"They wouldn't hesitate to kill."
Haruto lowered his gaze.
"...But..."
"...There were three of them."
"They were only a few years older than me."
"They were still... kids."
Kaito quietly listened.
"...At first..."
"...they treated me like a target."
"They believed everything they'd been told about the Inazuma Clan."
"...They believed capturing me was the right thing."
Haruto smiled faintly.
A sad smile.
"...But..."
"...The longer we stayed together..."
"...the more they started asking questions."
"They watched me."
"They talked to me."
"And eventually..."
"...they realized I wasn't the monster they'd been told I was."
"They changed."
"They became..."
"...my friends."
Haruto looked toward the letter in Ayame's hands.
"...That letter..."
"...was sent by those three."
"They risked their own lives..."
"...just to warn me."
He paused.
"...Everything written in that letter..."
"...is true."
"The war everyone is preparing for..."
"...isn't a real war."
"It's only a distraction."
"They want every shinobi focused on the borders..."
"...so no one is here..."
"...when they come."
Ayame's grip on the letter tightened.
Haruto slowly looked at both of them.
"...They're not coming for the village."
A painful silence.
"...They're coming..."
"...for us."
