Chapter 171 - Chapter 28 — Fractures Beneath Fear, Part8

Part 8 — After the Silence

The classroom remained silent.

No one spoke after Haruto sat back down.

The air itself felt heavy now.

Haruto kept his head lowered, breathing slowly.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Careful.

Controlled.

Trying to steady himself before his body gave out completely.

No one interrupted him.

Not even Daigo.

For several long seconds, the only sound in the room was the faint movement of wind outside the windows.

Then finally—

Daigo turned back toward the board quietly.

"…Open page seventy-four."

His voice was calm.

Normal.

But softer than before.

Slowly, students began moving again.

Books opened.

Pages turned.

Chairs shifted quietly.

But nobody truly returned to normal.

The lesson continued mechanically after that.

Daigo taught.

Students listened.

Or at least tried to.

But the classroom no longer felt like a classroom.

Every student remained trapped inside their own thoughts now.

Hina kept staring at her notebook without writing.

Riku occasionally glanced toward the window unconsciously.

Misaki had gone completely quiet.

Even students who normally looked detached seemed less distant now.

Near the back, Arashi remained still.

Expression unreadable.

But quieter than before somehow.

Ayame occasionally glanced toward Haruto silently.

Kaito tried pretending things were fine—

but he kept checking Haruto too.

And Haruto himself barely moved for the rest of class.

He simply sat there quietly.

Eyes lowered.

Still breathing carefully.

Like he was trying to hold himself together from the inside.

Eventually—

the final bell rang.

The sound echoed across the classroom softly.

Normally, students would immediately stand up.

Talk.

Rush outside.

But today—

everyone moved slower.

Quietly packing their things.

Quietly standing.

Several students glanced toward Haruto briefly before looking away again.

Some wanted to say something.

But nobody knew what words were supposed to help anymore.

Daigo remained near the front of the room silently while students gradually began leaving.

One by one—

the classroom emptied.

Until finally—

the triplets stepped out into the hallway together.

The academy corridors felt quieter than usual.

Even outside, the atmosphere around the village still felt tense.

Shinobi movement across rooftops continued in the distance.

Patrol units moved through nearby streets below.

The world hadn't calmed down at all.

It had only grown quieter.

Kaito adjusted his bag slightly while walking.

For once—

even he didn't know what to say immediately.

Ayame walked beside Haruto quietly.

Watching him carefully without making it obvious.

Haruto kept his gaze lowered as they walked.

Emotionally exhausted now.

After a while, Kaito finally spoke softly.

"…You feeling better?"

Haruto nodded once.

Small.

Weak.

Not convincing.

But Kaito accepted it anyway.

The three continued walking through the village streets together—

while above them,

shinobi still moved across the rooftops beneath the fading afternoon sky.
