Chapter 135 - Chapter 24 – The Cost of Going Beyond, Part3

Part 3 – Something Is Wrong

The room remained steady, filled with the low hum of equipment and controlled movement.

Medics moved between beds, checking readings, adjusting flow stabilizers, making quiet observations as they worked. The earlier chaos had settled, but the tension still lingered beneath the surface.

One of the medics approached Kaito and Ayame, stopping just a short distance from them.

"You two were in the arena as well," he said calmly. "Any injuries?"

Kaito didn't respond immediately.

He glanced down at his hand, flexing his fingers slightly.

A faint wince followed.

"…Just my hand," he admitted. "Took a hit earlier."

The medic stepped closer.

"Show me."

Kaito held it out. The medic examined it carefully, pressing lightly along the joints and wrist.

"Nothing broken," he said after a moment. "But there's strain. You'll need to rest it."

Kaito exhaled quietly.

"…Yeah. Figures."

The medic handed him a small wrap, beginning to secure it around his hand with practiced efficiency.

"Don't use it for anything heavy today. If the pain worsens, come back."

Kaito gave a short nod.

"Got it."

The medic then turned to Ayame.

"And you?"

Ayame shook her head slightly.

"…I'm fine."

The medic studied her for a second longer, as if making sure she meant it.

"No internal strain? No instability?"

"…No."

A pause.

Then he nodded.

"If anything changes, report it immediately."

Ayame didn't respond, but gave a slight acknowledgment.

The medic moved on.

Silence returned almost instantly.

Kaito flexed his wrapped hand once, testing it, then let it rest at his side.

"…Could've been worse," he muttered.

Ayame didn't answer.

Her gaze never left Haruto.

On the bed, Haruto remained still.

His breathing had stabilized slightly compared to earlier, but it was still shallow, each rise and fall of his chest carrying a faint unevenness.

A monitor beside him flickered with slow, steady readings.

Not critical.

But not normal either.

A medic adjusted the sensor near his arm, watching the values closely.

"…Flow's stabilizing," he said quietly to another nearby.

"…Slowly," the second replied. "Still fluctuating."

Haruto didn't react.

Didn't move.

But beneath the surface—

something shifted.

A faint twitch ran through his fingers.

Small.

Barely noticeable.

The medic paused, glancing down.

"…Did you see that?"

"Yeah."

They leaned in slightly, watching.

His breathing changed.

Just a little.

Deeper than before.

Uneven—but stronger.

Across the room, Ayame noticed it instantly.

Her posture straightened.

"…Kaito."

He looked up.

"…Yeah. I see it."

Another small movement.

His fingers curled slightly this time, then relaxed.

Not random.

Not just reflex.

Something was happening.

The monitor gave a soft, subtle change in rhythm.

Not alarming.

But different.

A shift.

Inside the silence of his unconscious state—

darkness.

Not empty.

Just… quiet.

Fragments drifted.

The arena.

The impact.

Arashi's voice—

"You don't belong here."

A flicker.

Then—

another image.

His own hand.

Energy flowing through it.

Too much.

Too fast.

A strain that his body hadn't been ready for—

but forced anyway.

Then—

that moment.

The shift.

His eyes—

burning.

Red.

Back in the room—

his fingers tightened slightly.

This time—

clear.

The medics exchanged a glance.

"…He's reacting."

Ayame took a small step forward without realizing it.

Kaito's gaze sharpened.

The air in the room changed—

just slightly.

Because this wasn't just recovery anymore.

Something was waking up.

And whatever it was—

it didn't feel the same as before.

The shift didn't go unnoticed.
