Chapter 124 - Chapter 22 – What Lies Ahead, Part8

Part 8 – Into the Unknown

"Round 2 of the Vanguard Tournament will begin immediately."

A pause. He let the suspense hang for a moment, letting the students' hearts pound in anticipation.

"This round will test your combat skills, teamwork, and strategy. You will no longer be limited to defensive zones or simple flag retrieval. Instead, you will compete to retrieve one relic per team from six designated locations in the arena."

Some students exchanged nervous glances.

"Each relic location allows only two teams at a time. If another team reaches your relic, you must fight to defend it—or risk losing it."

He raised his hand, emphasizing the gravity of his next words.

"Once a team secures a relic, it can be taken from them if the opposing team wins the fight. Only the first six teams to return a relic to their base within fifteen minutes will advance. The others will be eliminated."

The forest surrounding them rustled faintly, hiding shapes and shadows.

"What's different this round," he continued, "is that combat is allowed. Weapons may be used. Elemental powers will not be allowed, as this is a test of teamwork and physical skill. You may defend, attack, or strategize—but you cannot stop or delay excessively to protect a teammate at the cost of the relic."

He let the rules sink in.

"Your starting positions are here, in the center. On my signal, you will run to the relics. The other instructors, along with the students who were eliminated in Round 1, have already hidden the relics throughout the arena."

A low murmur ran through the crowd as everyone tried to imagine the forest full of hidden relics, waiting to be claimed—and the enemy teams they would immediately clash with.

The instructor looked around at all 36 students.

"This is not a round you can easily predict. Stay alert, work with your teammates, and remember—chaos is part of the test."

He stepped back.

The instructor paused, scanning the eager faces before him. Then he spoke, his voice clear and deliberate.

"Now, the teams are:"

A hush fell over the students as everyone tried to memorize who was on which team.

"Team 1: Amaya Homura, Chiharu Phoenix, Yamashita Taro."

"Team 2: Arashi Homura, Pirika Uri, Ozawa Takahara."

"Team 3: Izumi Homura, Nobu Mizuno, Mika Fumio."

"Team 4: Misaki Hoshino, Yuna Sekiguchi, Bunjiro Uesugi."

"Team 5: Hina Kobayashi, Saito Kaneshiro, Kanae Ziro."

"Team 6: Saki Aizawa, Hiroki Hasegawa, Leo Junpei."

"Team 7: Raizo Okabe, Naoko Minami, Kento Ishida."

"Team 8: Daichi Mori, Katsuo Shimura, Marika Kurogane."

"Team 9: Souta Nishikawa, Tetsu Yonamine, Nagai Ayaka."

"Team 10: Shin Sugiyame, Mei Shibata, Zenzo Amana."

"Team 11: Riku Tanaka, Nao Hoshi, Akio Akebono."

"Team 12: Haruto Inazuma, Ayame Inazuma, Kaito Inazuma."

He let the names hang in the air for a moment, letting the students process their new squads.

"Teams, prepare yourselves. The relics have already been hidden. On my signal, you will sprint to your first target."

Some students clenched their fists, some checked their weapons one last time, and some exchanged quick glances with their new teammates.

The forest seemed to wait with them, the shadows of trees and rocks hiding the relics—and the enemies—just out of sight.

Haruto felt a rush of relief as he looked at his team.

He was on a team with Ayame and Kaito—his siblings. A small, genuine smile spread across his face.

Lucky, he thought. I don't have to fight against them.

Ayame gave him a quick nod, and Kaito adjusted his grip on his staff. The three shared a brief, silent understanding—whatever happened in this round, they would watch out for each other.

At that moment, movement came from the edges of the forest. The instructors arrived, accompanied by the 12 students who had been eliminated in Round 1.

Each of the eliminated students carried something carefully—hidden relics that they had placed throughout the arena. Once all the relics were set in their positions, the students stepped back.

One by one, they walked toward the advancing teams.

"Good luck!" they said.

Even Haruki and Sanae, who had been eliminated earlier, smiled and nodded.

The 12 students gave each of the 12 teams a quick gesture of support. Some patted shoulders; some whispered words of encouragement.

The main instructor raised his hand once more, commanding attention.

"Relics are now in place. Teams, take your positions and prepare."

A tense silence fell over the clearing. Every student gripped their weapon, adjusted their footing, and tightened their focus.

"Begin."

The instructor dropped his hand.

Immediately, the 12 teams marched forward, moving in different directions toward the forest. Shadows stretched across the ground, trees and rocks hiding the first relics—and the rival teams racing toward them.

The second round of the Vanguard Tournament had officially begun.

The teams split from the center, each taking a different path into the forest.

Kaito pointed decisively at a path winding between thick trees and jagged rocks.

"We'll go this way," he said firmly, and Haruto and Ayame nodded, falling in step beside him.

At the entrance to each relic's area, instructors stood watch, their eyes scanning the surroundings. They were there to enforce the rule: no more than two teams could enter a relic area at the same time. Any team attempting to crowd in would be stopped and redirected.

The forest quickly filled with the sound of rushing footsteps, light chatter, and the clatter of weapons being adjusted.

Here's how the race to relics unfolded

Team 1 and Team 8 were headed toward the first relic area. Team 1 had a slight lead, moving faster along the narrow path, while Team 8 struggled to close the distance.

Team 2 and Team 11 moved toward the second relic location. Team 2, confident and quick, had already reached the clearing, while Team 11 was trailing closely behind, trying to anticipate their rivals' movements.

Team 3 and Team 4 were racing toward the third relic. Team 3 arrived first, weapons ready, their eyes scanning for incoming opponents, while Team 4 followed cautiously, aware they would likely clash.

Team 5 and Team 6 approached the fourth relic. Team 5 had the advantage, moving ahead, but Saki from Team 6 was dangerously close, her footsteps almost matching Team 5's pace. The other two members of Team 6 lagged slightly behind, still catching up.

Team 7 and Team 9 made their way toward the fifth relic. Team 7 was leading, pushing forward with precision, while Team 9 moved in behind, looking for the perfect moment to strike.

Team 10 and Team 12 ran toward the final relic area. Team 12, with Haruto, Ayame, and Kaito, were already ahead, taking the lead as they navigated the forest terrain, leaving Team 10 to scramble behind.

The instructors at each relic's entrance watched carefully. Two teams could occupy each area at most—any more, and the extra would be blocked until space cleared.

Every team's heartbeat raced as they neared their first relic. Fights were inevitable, and the forest seemed to close in around them, hiding shadows, rocks, and enemy movements.

It was only a matter of moments before the first clashes erupted.

Every student gripped a kunai in one hand, the weight familiar, the tip glinting faintly in the dappled forest light. But as always, only a few had the brains to truly leverage it.

Team 1—especially Amaya—moved with sharp precision, anticipating obstacles and rival movements.

Team 2, led by Arashi, calculated the best approach, using paper bombs to cloud Team 11 and slow them down.

Team 3, with Izumi's careful eye, relied on speed and awareness rather than smoke or tricks.

Team 5, under Hina's direction, tossed smoke bombs at Team 6 to block them temporarily.

Team 7, guided by Raizo and Naoko, maneuvered cleverly but chose not to use smoke, knowing brute strategy could keep them ahead.

Team 12—Haruto, Ayame, and Kaito—used a mix of cunning and teamwork, deploying paper bombs only when necessary to hold back Team 10.

The forest was alive with motion. Kunai flashed through the air, some thrown to tag or distract opponents, others clattered harmlessly against rocks or trees. Smoke drifted along narrow paths, hiding movements and forcing some teams to slow down.

Time passed, each minute bringing new tension.

Suddenly, Haruto froze mid-step. His eyes lit up.

"Yeah! C'mon, let's go! We found it!" he called.

Ayame hurried over, her small hands gripping the relic as she turned it over, eyes scanning its back carefully. Her brow furrowed.

A small dot glimmered faintly on the surface.

"…It's fake." she said quietly, holding it up so Haruto and Kaito could see.

Haruto's fists tightened. "Damn it. Come on, let's find the real one!"

Kaito gave a short nod. "Alright. Split up, watch each other, don't get distracted by smoke."

The team moved through the forest again, eyes darting to every shadow, listening for footsteps, rustling leaves, and the faintest hint of enemy movement.

All around them, teams scrambled, searched, and fought, some throwing kunai, some tossing smoke bombs, all desperate to be first.

Haruto's team pushed forward, knowing the real relic could be anywhere, and each passing second made the chaos grow.

After sometime, Team 6 and Team 7 emerged from their relic areas almost at the same time, each holding their prize tightly. The narrow clearing forced them into proximity.

Team 6 moved deliberately, blocking Team 7's path.

"Out of the way," Leo muttered, glaring at Naoko.

Before anyone could react, Hiroki and Leo launched a fire-style attack at Naoko. The flames hit her directly, and she screamed in pain, her arm and shoulder badly burned. The smoke curled around her, and her small body collapsed to the ground. Raizo lunged to protect her, but it was too late—the attack had already done its damage.

The instructors arrived immediately, rushing in between the teams.

"Stop!" one shouted, stepping between the combatants. "Hiroki! Leo! Elemental powers are forbidden in this round! You are both eliminated!"

Naoko lay trembling on the ground, her injuries severe. The instructors immediately removed her from the tournament and attended to her. She would not be continuing—her tournament was over.

With the chaos controlled, the remaining teams continued toward their bases.

When the final whistle of the round sounded, the results were clear:

Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, and Team 12 had successfully secured their relics and advanced, winning cleanly.

Team 6 had two members eliminated, leaving only one surviving.

Team 7 lost Naoko due to the attack, leaving two survivors.

The instructors merged the surviving members of Teams 6 and 7 into a single three-member squad, giving them a chance to continue.

In total, only 15 students advanced to the next stage—the first solo round of the tournament. The forest cleared as the eliminated students and the instructors guided the teams back to the central area.

The remaining five teams—Team 1, Team 2, Team 3, Team 12, and the merged Team 6+7—stood together, catching their breath.

The cleared forest stood silent as the surviving students gathered in the center once more. The tension from the team rounds still lingered in the air, heavy and electric.

The instructor stepped forward, his gaze sweeping across the 15 remaining students.

"Attention. The students who have advanced to Solo Round 1 are: Haruto Inazuma, Ayame Inazuma, Kaito Inazuma, Amaya Homura, Chiharu Phoenix, Yamashita Taro, Arashi Homura, Pirika Uri, Ozawa Takahara, Izumi Homura, Nobu Mizuno, Mika Fumio, Saki Aizawa, Raizo Okabe, and Kento Ishida."

The students stiffened, absorbing the list, realizing that the number had shrunk significantly.

The instructor's voice turned sharper, carrying a weight that made the forest seem stiller.

"Hiroki Hasegawa and Leo Junpei have been eliminated for using elemental powers, which were forbidden in the team round. Naoko Minami suffered severe injuries and is unable to continue. She is out of the tournament."

A stunned silence rippled through the group. Students glanced at each other, eyes wide, some whispering, some staring blankly. The reality of the tournament's harsh rules and stakes had just hit them.

The instructor lifted a hand, breaking the tension.

"Everyone else, you now have a fifteen-minute break. Use this time to rest, recover, and prepare. After the break, you will move to the arena over there for Solo Round 1."

He gestured toward a path leading into a denser, shadowed section of the forest.

"Dismissed."
