Chapter 36 - Careful

On the Way to Headquarters- Late Afternoon

The car ride is quiet.

Too quiet.

The city moves outside the window in blurs of gray and gold.

You sit in the passenger seat.

Hands folded tightly in your lap.

Gojo drives one-handed.

Humming softly like this is a grocery run.

It's not.

The silence stretches.

You finally speak.

Y/N: Did they fight you like this too?

He glances at you briefly.

Satoru Gojo: Constantly.

A beat.

Y/N: Were you nervous?

He smiles faintly.

Satoru Gojo: No.

You frown slightly.

Y/N: Of course you weren't.

He chuckles.

Satoru Gojo: I was angry.

That makes you look at him.

Really look.

He doesn't seem angry now.

Just calm.

Controlled.

You stare down at your hands.

Y/N: I'm not angry.

He hums.

Satoru Gojo: I know.

A pause.

Y/N: I'm scared they'll decide I'm not worth the trouble.

The words feel heavier out loud.

The car slows at a red light.

He doesn't look at you immediately.

When he does, his expression is unreadable behind the blindfold.

But his voice is steady.

Satoru Gojo: Let me explain something to you.

The light turns green.

The car moves again.

Satoru Gojo: They don't get to decide your worth.

You swallow.

Y/N: They kind of do.

Satoru Gojo: No.

His tone is firmer now.

Satoru Gojo: They decide politics. Paperwork. Permissions.

A small pause.

Satoru Gojo: I decide who touches my students.

The air in the car shifts slightly.

Grounded.

Certain.

You hesitate.

Y/N: What if I lose control in there?

He answers immediately.

Satoru Gojo: Then I step in.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

You stare ahead.

Y/N: And if they try to separate us?

He laughs softly.

Not amused.

Confident.

Satoru Gojo: They tried that with Yuta.

A beat.

Satoru Gojo: They tried that with Yuji.

Another beat.

Satoru Gojo: I'm still here.

Silence settles.

You shift slightly in your seat.

Your voice lowers.

Y/N: When they talk about sealing me… it feels like they're talking about erasing me.

That one slips out before you can stop it.

The car slows again.

This time he pulls to the side of the road.

Engine still running.

But stopped.

He turns slightly toward you.

Not towering.

Not overwhelming.

Just present.

Satoru Gojo: Look at me.

You do.

Even if you can't see his eyes.

Satoru Gojo: The seal was never meant to erase you.

His voice is calm.

Measured.

Satoru Gojo: It was meant to give you time.

You blink.

He continues.

Satoru Gojo: Power without time becomes fear.

A small pause.

Satoru Gojo: You were a child.

Your throat tightens slightly.

Satoru Gojo: I sealed the overflow. Not you.

That settles somewhere deep.

He leans back slightly.

Casual again.

But softer.

Satoru Gojo: And I didn't protect you because you were dangerous.

A faint smile touches his voice.

Satoru Gojo: I protected you because you were worth protecting.

The words hit quietly.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just steady.

Inside your chest—

Tenchu hums low.

Calmer.

Listening.

You exhale slowly.

Y/N: If they insult me…

He smirks faintly.

Satoru Gojo: They will.

You almost smile.

Y/N: If it reacts—

He tilts his head slightly.

Satoru Gojo: Then don't panic.

A pause.

Satoru Gojo: You and Tenchu are learning each other.

Your hands relax slightly.

Satoru Gojo: And if it forgets for a second—

His voice drops just a little.

Satoru Gojo: I'll remind it who raised you.

You stare at him.

There it is.

Not teacher.

Not strongest sorcerer.

Guardian.

The car engine hums softly.

He shifts the gear back into drive.

Satoru Gojo: Ready?

Your pulse is still fast.

But steadier.

You nod.

Y/N: Ready.

The car pulls back onto the road.

Ahead—

Old stone gates wait.

Judgment waiting behind them.

But you're not walking in alone.

Jujutsu Headquarters — Assembly Chamber

The room is dim.

Paper doors.

Old wood.

Incense faint in the air.

Several Higher-Ups sit behind screens.

Faces barely visible.

Judging without being seen.

You stand in the center.

Gojo stands slightly behind you.

Relaxed posture.

Hands in pockets.

Like this is boring.

It's not.

A dry voice echoes from behind the screen.

Higher-Up #1: So this is the vessel.

You stiffen slightly.

Gojo's voice cuts in smoothly.

Satoru Gojo: Student.

The air shifts subtly.

The elder ignores him.

Higher-Up #2: The seal was incomplete at birth.

You swallow.

They know everything.

Higher-Up #1: Why was it not permanently suppressed?

Gojo answers casually.

Satoru Gojo: Because suppression isn't education.

A faint scoff.

Higher-Up #3: We have already made that mistake once.

A clear reference.

Yuji.

Yuta.

Gojo doesn't react outwardly.

But the room feels tighter.

Higher-Up #2: We allowed the girl to remain at Tokyo under your supervision.

Allowed.

The word tastes bitter.

Higher-Up #1: Today we determine whether that allowance continues.

Silence.

You keep your posture steady.

Tenchu is quiet.

Watching.

Listening.

A new voice speaks.

Older.

Colder.

Higher-Up #4: The surge during birth destroyed an entire medical wing.

You close your eyes briefly.

You didn't know that detail.

Gojo's tone remains light.

Satoru Gojo: No fatalities.

Higher-Up #4: By luck.

Then—

The sentence that cuts.

Clean.

Precise.

Higher-Up #1: You are a risk that should have been sealed permanently.

The room goes still.

That wasn't directed at Gojo.

It was directed at you.

Your chest tightens.

You don't look down.

You don't cry.

But it lands.

Deep.

And Tenchu feels it.

Not as insult.

As threat.

Existential threat.

The air temperature drops.

The incense smoke bends unnaturally.

A subtle vibration runs through the floorboards.

Gojo doesn't move.

Not yet.

The elder continues.

Higher-Up #1: If you cannot prove control, we will dismantle the seal and contain the anomaly ourselves.

Contain.

Like you're an object.

Tenchu shifts.

Not flaring wildly.

But something ancient and furious stirs.

Protective.

Not just of you.

Of existence.

Your heartbeat spikes.

Gojo speaks.

Still casual.

Still smiling faintly.

Satoru Gojo: I wouldn't finish that sentence.

A ripple of pressure expands from him.

Not aggressive.

But absolute.

The incense flame flickers violently.

The elder continues anyway.

Higher-Up #1: Or we will dispose of—

The room fractures.

Not explosion.

Not chaos.

Just pressure.

Heavy.

Crushing.

The screens rattle.

Wood cracks faintly.

You didn't tell Tenchu to move.

But it did.

Not outward.

Inward.

Around you.

A protective sphere.

Dense.

Terrifyingly controlled.

Gojo steps forward now.

Not laughing.

Not playful.

His voice drops.

Cold.

Satoru Gojo:Careful.

Silence.

For the first time—

The Higher-Ups hesitate.

They feel it.

Tenchu isn't panicking.

It isn't wild.

It is responding to the suggestion of your eradication.

Gojo's presence expands slightly.

Just enough to press back.

He doesn't overpower Tenchu.

He stabilizes it.

Like placing a steady hand over a shaking one.

His voice is calm.

Dead calm.

Satoru Gojo: I promised her grandmother I'd protect her.

The air feels heavy with that truth.

Satoru Gojo: You will not speak about disposing of my student in front of me.

A faint crack splinters through the wooden beam above.

Tenchu pulses once more—

Then stills.

Because you breathe.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

You whisper softly—

Y/N: I'm in control.

The pressure stabilizes immediately.

Not gone.

But disciplined.

The elders notice.

That matters.

A pause stretches long.

Then—

Higher-Up #2: …Demonstrate suppression.

Gojo glances at you.

Not commanding.

Trusting.

You close your eyes.

Inhale.

Tenchu hums.

You don't fight it.

You guide it.

Slowly—

The pressure recedes.

The wood stops groaning.

The incense smoke steadies.

Silence returns.

You open your eyes.

Clear.

Standing.

Unbroken.

A long pause.

Then—

Higher-Up #1: She remains under observation.

Gojo smiles faintly.

Satoru Gojo: Of course she does.

The meeting is dismissed.

Outside — Stone Steps

The doors slide shut behind you.

You didn't realize your hands were trembling until now.

Gojo walks beside you.

Casual again.

Like that wasn't dangerous.

You stop.

Y/N: They would've sealed me again.

He doesn't sugarcoat it.

Satoru Gojo: Yes.

You swallow.

Y/N: Or worse.

He looks down at you.

Serious now.

Satoru Gojo: Not while I'm alive.

Simple.

Certain.

Not dramatic.

A promise.

He adjusts his blindfold slightly.

Satoru Gojo: You did well.

You look at him.

Y/N: It moved when they said—

You can't finish.

He does it for you.

Satoru Gojo: "Dispose."

You nod faintly.

He hums.

Satoru Gojo: That wasn't instability.

A small pause.

Satoru Gojo: That was self-preservation.

You breathe slowly.

The political storm isn't over.

They're watching now.

Measuring.

Evaluating.

And somewhere far away—

Tenchu remains quiet.

But more awake than before.
