Chapter 103 - Chapter 101

Chapter CI: The Masteral Complex, Part 1

The morning fog clings to the castle's spires like silk, heavy and unmoving. Beneath the stone foundations, the Crypt of Vitae hums once more — alive, ancient, watching. The air vibrates faintly with energy, like the aftertaste of thunder.

Nathaniel Cross wakes before the others. The chamber he sleeps in is dim, lit only by streaks of gray light seeping through the narrow windows. His hands tremble faintly — not from fear, but from the residue of last night's transformation. He stares at his reflection in the small mirror by the wall. His eyes glimmer red for a moment before fading back to human brown.

"Still me," he whispers. "For now."

Down in the crypt, Dracula awaits. The Count stands by a circle of runes carved into the obsidian floor, his silhouette sharp against the pale fire that burns without smoke. When Nathaniel enters, Dracula does not turn to greet him.

"You are early," Dracula says. His voice reverberates, low and measured. "Good. Discipline before dawn is the mark of progress."

Nathaniel nods. "You said we'd move beyond the basics."

Dracula finally turns, crimson eyes gleaming. "Indeed. But understand this, Cross — shapeshifting is not about mimicry. It's about memory. Every creature holds a memory of what it means to exist. To become that creature, you must feel what it remembers."

He draws a circle on the ground with one clawed finger, whispering words older than speech. The runes ignite. "Today, you move beyond the small. You have learned the rat, the cat, the wolf. Now... the hound."

Nathaniel swallows, lowering himself into the center of the circle. His pulse aligns with the rhythm of the floor — deep, resonant, alive.

He focuses, breath slowing. His skin ripples, bones bending. The transformation begins smoother than before — less pain, more clarity. His hands morph into paws, his spine extends, muscles stretch. Within seconds, a massive hound stands where the man once was, its eyes glowing amber in the torchlight.

Dracula studies him silently. "Good," he murmurs. "Now hold it."

Nathaniel growls softly — not out of aggression, but out of the strange thrill of control. The scents in the cavern become sharper: the iron tang of blood in the stones, the faint dust of centuries. For a moment, he feels free.

"Do not lose yourself," Dracula warns. "This is where beasts devour their masters."

The hound's eyes flick toward him. Then Nathaniel exhales — and returns to human form, steady and focused. No pain this time. Only silence.

Dracula's lips curve faintly. "You learn faster than most."

"I've had good reason to," Nathaniel answers.

"Reason is the first chain to break," Dracula says. "Instinct is your truer teacher."

Meanwhile, in the side chambers — the others awaken to their own trials.

Theo stands before a ring of mirrors that reflect not his face, but pure light. His instructor, the silver-eyed vampire known as Arlen, raises a hand. "You've learned to summon light. Now learn to shape it."

Theo blinks. "Shape it into what?"

Arlen gestures toward the mirrors. "What your will can imagine. A weapon forged from illumination itself."

Theo hesitates, then grins. "Like... Green Lantern?"

Arlen frowns faintly. "I know not this lantern you speak of. But perhaps, yes — if it serves as metaphor."

Theo smirks. "Then let's make it real."

He closes his eyes, focusing on the pulse within his chest — a bright warmth, alive and pure. When he opens them again, light streams from his palms, forming into a long, gleaming spear. It hums softly, pure and radiant, the reflection of his own conviction.

Arlen nods. "Good. But remember — creation without emotion is hollow. You must believe the weapon is alive, or it will fail you."

Theo thrusts the spear forward, its light splintering through the mirrors like shattered glass. The chamber fills with brilliance — a brief, blinding sunrise in the depths of darkness.

Elsewhere, Edison and Kingsley spar beneath cascading arcs of lightning.

"Push harder!" roars Kingsley, his fists crackling with energy.

Edison grins, wind whipping around him, static coiling at his fingertips. "You sure you can handle the storm, tough guy?"

Their instructors watch silently from above — one studying their energy, the other their restraint. Bolts of lightning strike the cavern walls, carving shallow scars in the obsidian. Sweat and electricity mix until the air smells like rain before battle.

"You both lack control," one instructor finally says. "Power without restraint is the quickest path to ruin."

"Then we'll master it," Kingsley answers, lightning flaring behind his eyes.

Across the caverns, Pauline and Maisie move in perfect synchronicity beneath their mentor's watchful gaze. Their blades sing through the air, arcs of silver slicing the heavy stillness.

"Again!" the instructor commands.

They move — one strikes, the other counters, their rhythm flawless.

"You've learned form," the instructor says. "Now learn purpose. A blade is not for show — it is the extension of decision. Hesitate, and you bleed."

Maisie exhales sharply, vaulting over Pauline's strike and landing in a crouch. "Guess hesitation's not in our vocabulary."

Pauline grins. "Not anymore."

They move again, faster now — sparks flying as steel meets steel. Acrobatic momentum carries them higher, spinning across the stone pillars before landing with feline grace.

The echo of combat fills the crypt, blending with the deep hum of power that never sleeps.

Back in the central chamber, Dracula circles Nathaniel once more.

"You've mastered the beast," Dracula says. "Now master the mask."

Nathaniel blinks. "The mask?"

Dracula raises a hand. Shadows coil around him and melt away — leaving behind a perfect image of Nathaniel himself, identical in every detail. "Human transformation. The art of mimicry. To wear another face without losing your mind."

Nathaniel's eyes widen. "You want me to turn into you?"

Dracula smirks. "You're not yet worthy of that face. Try another — a form from memory."

Nathaniel hesitates, focusing on the image of Theo in his mind. He exhales — and slowly, his features shift. His jawline alters, hair lightens, and when he opens his eyes, he's staring at Theo's face in the reflection of a rune.

The real Theo, passing by, freezes mid-step. "Bro. What the hell."

Nathaniel grins in Theo's voice. "Guess we're twins now."

Theo laughs nervously. "Please don't ever do that again."

Dracula's faint chuckle echoes like gravel. "Progress."

By midday, the group converges once more at the heart of the cavern. Each bears new marks of effort — torn sleeves, bruised knuckles, exhausted grins.

Dracula studies them all from the high dais. His expression is one of pride and severity intertwined. "You've each touched the edge of your limits. But understand — this was only the beginning. Mastery is not about how much power you wield, but how long you can stand before it consumes you."

The crypt trembles faintly. A deep rumble passes through the walls. Nathaniel looks up — the torches flicker.

"Was that—?" Theo begins.

Dracula raises a hand. "Silence."

The sound fades. Only the dripping of unseen water remains. But Nathaniel feels it — something in the air, a vibration deeper than sound. Like the mountain itself is breathing differently.

Dracula's gaze shifts toward the far wall, where runes faintly pulse a strange, cold blue. "Something stirs beneath us."

Grimm, standing in the shadows, folds his arms. "That's not part of training, is it?"

Dracula's tone is grave. "No. That... is the mountain remembering."

Nathaniel's heart quickens. His instincts flare — the wolf within stirs, uneasy.

Theo steps forward, hand glowing faintly with light. "Should we check it out?"

Dracula looks at him sharply. "No. Whatever sleeps below this crypt was sealed long before your kind learned to speak. It awakens when power accumulates — and you've all given it much to feed on today."

Nathaniel frowns. "Then what happens if it wakes?"

Dracula's eyes flicker red. "Pray that it does not."

Silence falls again — heavy, thick, uncertain.

And then — the faintest whisper reaches Nathaniel's ears. It isn't words. It's older, more primal. A call, deep and resonant, echoing from beneath the stone.

He shivers. The air tastes like ashes and iron.

The torches dim. Somewhere, deep in the earth, something sighs — a slow, ancient exhale that makes the very runes tremble.

Dracula's gaze sharpens. "Enough training for today."

Nathaniel opens his mouth to protest, but the Count's tone leaves no room for argument. "You've awakened something. Until we know what, you will rest."

As the others disperse, Nathaniel lingers. His hand brushes the cold floor, feeling the faint pulse beneath it. For a moment, he swears he feels something pulse back.

A connection.

A warning.

The shadows along the wall ripple — briefly taking the shape of wings before melting into darkness again.

Nathaniel exhales, his reflection in the obsidian faintly showing the hint of a second pair of eyes glowing behind his own.

The beast within him isn't just learning.

It's listening.

And above, the clouds over Hoia Baciu darken once more, rolling like a restless sea — thunder whispering across the Romanian sky, heralding that something ancient has begun to stir.
