Kyoko Tsumugi
She strolled carelessly into the room her son used as a headquarters for meeting with his subordinates, holding her new daughter by the hand. Her eldest daughter followed behind, and upon spotting the bed, immediately ran over and hopped onto it.
The sun outside was still far from setting, but it was already preparing to dip below the horizon, ready to cede the sky to the moon and the night.
"Come on, Rin-chan, let's wait for your brother to come back; he'll awaken your powers for you." She said this gently to the girl, who stared at her with her mouth wide open in disbelief.
"Really? Will he give me the same powers you have?" Rin-chan smiled broadly, showing how happy she was. Kyoko chuckled softly at her innocent, childish reaction—one that, fortunately, hadn't been shattered by the death of her mother.
"Of course, Rin. Isao-kun is your big brother, and even though he hasn't spent much time with you yet, he will love and care for you." She stroked Rin's head, making the girl blush and lean against her leg, hugging it as tightly as her age allowed.
Kyoko smirked, lifted the girl into her arms, and smiled as she felt the little girl—with such a heavy fate—wrap her arms around her neck. She walked over to the bed and sat down next to Kotobuki.
"Do you want me to brush your hair? It'll be straight and very beautiful, Rin-chan." The girl on her lap just nodded quietly, still wearing her innocent smile. "Alright then, sit still, okay?" With that, she pulled a hairbrush from her pocket—one she'd grabbed earlier in a shop filled with women's trinkets—undid the girl's two pigtails, and began brushing her long hair, humming a calm melody meant to keep the child relaxed.
She sat like that for several minutes, slowly and gently brushing the dark hair of her new daughter. Honestly, if you thought about it, Rin's hair was the same shade as her own—if not for the fact that Kyoko's hair was dyed blonde. In their family, only one person was a natural blonde, and that was Kotobuki, whose tail was currently stroking Kyoko's back.
It was surprising that Isao's power to awaken abilities could alter human biology to eliminate defects, though she shouldn't have been surprised. After all, she herself possessed the ability to telepathically control all metal within her field of vision, not to mention a trait that gave her near-superhuman tolerance to many things.
And while thinking about her metal-control ability, a thought occurred to her—horrifying, yet perhaps more useful in dangerous situations than not. Her ability gave her the freedom to control and sense any metal. Only now did she realize something crucial.
Ever since she received her ability, she couldn't shake a certain feeling—as if she always knew someone was nearby. Only now, thinking about it, did she realize she was sensing blood—specifically, the iron contained within the blood of everyone around her.
If those people were within her line of sight, she could likely control their bodies against their will. It was horrifying, incredibly so, yet quite useful if she needed to pacify someone dangerous to others.
Her resolve hardened as she recalled how nearly her beloved son was killed by that mutated zombie. She looked at the girl in her arms... she, too, was in danger. And because of her age and everything that entailed, any threat could be critical. That was precisely why she would ask Isao-kun to awaken her powers, so Rin would at least have a small chance of saving herself if she were ever away from them. Though that was unlikely, as Kyoko intended to accompany the little girl everywhere; after all, she was her daughter.
"Mom?" Her eldest daughter spoke suddenly, making her pause brushing Rin's hair for a moment to glance over.
"What is it, Kotobuki? Is something wrong?"
"I'm curious... how would you react if Isao had several girlfriends?" Her question made Kyoko frown slightly because...
To be honest, it bothered her, yet at the same time, she understood it wasn't her business. Any girl orbiting Isao knew what she was doing. Besides, it would be foolish to forbid her son from having relationships with several girls just because society didn't accept it. Fortunately for him, society was currently destroyed, and only he decided with whom and with how many girls he could have a romantic relationship.
Although... he should be a bit wary of Yuriko or Kiriko. Despite their age, those women were making eyes at her son, being nearly twice as old as her little angel.
"Hm, that's not our business, Kotobuki. Your brother is already a grown man. He can decide for himself who he wants to be with and face the consequences of his own choices. Fortunately for him, society is now destroyed to its very foundation, and no one will judge him if he decides to date dozens of women at once." She nodded, continuing to gently comb Rin's hair.
"Hmph, yeah, yeah..." Her daughter grumbled resentfully, making Kyoko sigh wearily. Understanding why she even brought the subject up made Kyoko's brows furrow.
"Kotobuki, you shouldn't interfere in your brother's relationships, no matter how much you love him. Do you think he'll like it if his beloved sister starts ruining his relationships with girls he likes, purely out of jealousy?" She said this quietly, almost hissing at her daughter because of the hidden threat in her voice whenever she spoke of Isao's relationships.
"Oh, and what of it? Saya is a spoiled little girl who thinks she's better than everyone. Saeko is just a cow with big tits and a submissive character that fooled him! Not to mention that neither of them knows anything about him! They literally met him yesterday and are already crawling toward my brother like they deserve his love!" Kyoko looked at her daughter, noting her scowling, angry expression, and sighed tiredly.
"And what of it? You aren't the one in a relationship with them, your brother is. And even then, what other options does he have? You? Don't be stupid, girl. You are his sister, and even in a hundred years, your relationship won't be that of... of... a couple." She covered Rin's ears with her hands, looking with anger at her rebellious daughter, who merely smirked.
"Oh, really? You think so?" She sat up slightly into a semi-reclined position, looking at Kyoko with a raised eyebrow and an arrogant smile.
"Yes. And I will be right, because what you are doing is wrong and will be judged by people, not to mention the hundreds of other problems that would follow from what you're thinking of doing." Kotobuki only chuckled at her words, watching her with a playful yet arrogant smile.
"Judged? By whom? The people Isao saved? Those who are alive only thanks to him? If you haven't noticed, Mom, nearly half the people in the shopping mall already practically consider him a god. You should have noticed that when we were sitting in the arcade surrounded by people. The other half doesn't do it only because they haven't seen what Isao is capable of, but the first half is already slowly swaying them toward that mindset." She lay back on the bed, stretching her arms and legs out in a star shape, making Kyoko feel uneasy at how freely she spoke of all this. "None of them would dare say a word to him because he gives other people power—power that lets them live and thrive, rather than survive and die. If he decides to take their daughters or their wives, most men would be happy about it because it would likely be rewarded by Isao. Though he probably wouldn't do such a thing, they don't know that." The arrogant smile on Kotobuki's face slowly shifted to a calm, blissful one. "And these people won't say anything to him if he decides that his sister is the woman who deserves his love. And then we will be together, and no one will be able to separate us, even in hundreds of years..." Her gaze snapped toward Kyoko, making her flinch. Kotobuki just stared at her, saying nothing, letting her think about the words she'd spoken.
Thinking about her words, Kyoko slowly realized another horrifying thing: Kotobuki was right.
Everyone—or at least the majority she'd seen in the arcade sitting with their children, or the people she'd given food to at lunch, or the people she'd seen today—did nothing but discuss how grateful they were to Isao. They praised her son excessively, calling him practically a messiah. Most of them spoke in earnest that he was a God in the flesh. Realizing this, she finally understood why everyone treated her with such respect—practically bowing at her feet when they saw her. This was the same reason no one had bothered her in the arcade about half an hour ago.
This... horrified her, because Kotobuki was right.
No one, absolutely no one, would tell him anything for what he did. And despite his ties to two other girls, they likely couldn't say anything to him either if Isao decided that looking at his sister as a woman was acceptable.
"And actually..." Kotobuki spoke suddenly, making Kyoko's body twitch. She barely kept herself from trembling. Her daughter's eyes had shifted slightly, but deep inside, she could still see that sweet, innocent Kotobuki... just one who, no matter what, wanted to be with her brother. It was horrifying. "No one will say anything even if his own mother is with him, right, Mom?" She stared at Kotobuki in shock as she said these words. A massive wave of anger washed over her, but she restrained herself, only squeezing Rin's ears tighter.
"W-what...?"
"Oh, come on, Mom, don't pretend to be stupid... I know how much you love your... 'Little Angel'!" The wide, calm smile on Kotobuki's face was innocent, and that was exactly why it was terrifying; her appearance didn't match what she was saying. "Isao-chan is incredible. He always helped you, always took care of you. When you got sick, he was by my side for weeks, helping you bathe—heck, he washed you himself! And if you look at it, he was the one who replaced the husband figure for you; he was practically your husband in everything but name..."
"Y-you... Kotobuki, what the hell are you t-talking about?" Her initial anger was replaced by... shame and guilt, because with every word Kotobuki spoke, she remembered all the time she had spent with Isao. In every moment, they either acted like mother and son, or like... husband and wife.
They worked together; he always took care of her, gave her gifts, flowers, and everything she wanted with his own money. Often, she would complain to him about certain clients, and he would listen, giving her advice on how to deal with them. He comforted her when she was down, and sometimes they would even go to the movies together, or anywhere else they could spend some quiet time together. She remembered dozens of times they fell asleep in the same bed after a long day of work, clinging to each other in a way mother and son shouldn't.
Her hand trembled as she realized the full weight of what her daughter was saying. Her heart... it was beating so hard, as if it were about to jump out of her chest and run away... to Isao, so he could protect her from her own foolish daughter!
"Oh, come on, Mom... why'd you get so pale? It's not like I revealed to Isao your preference for porn or Hentai. Seriously, you should be more careful and at least sometimes add to your bookmarks works that don't have the same tag."
"W-w-what?!" Her eyes went wide as she stared at her daughter. To the overwhelming guilt and shame was added a sense of embarrassment, making her pale skin turn crimson in an instant.
"Yeah, yeah. When you gave me your phone, I managed to check your sites. Just because I played the piano doesn't mean I only knew how to play the keys and just lie next to Isao-Ani. Honestly, I'm surprised that all the works of that nature in your bookmarks have 100% of the time the 'Incest' and 'Mother-Son' tags." Her daughter smirked, and Kyoko... she just wanted to fix herself!
"T-those are just imaginary things! Kotobuki! As long as you don't do it for real, nothing happens!"
"Oh~? Do you really think so? Maybe that was the case when society existed and thrived, but now it's in ruins. Not to mention that now we have abilities and traits. And most likely, if Isao truly is a god, he might have a trait that deletes all negative consequences of incest... Don't you think it would be nice to feel Isao-chan's hot, strong hands on your body? Such a sinful, taboo relationship would no longer be like that, and you wouldn't have to restrain yourself anymore, convincing yourself that he has younger girls and wouldn't even look at an old woman like you?"
"Stop! Kotobuki, just stop! Don't say another word. What you're saying is simply beyond comprehension—just shut up!" She screamed at her, feeling how her words were beginning to affect her and her thoughts. And... honestly, it just made her feel sick that she likely wouldn't be against it. It made her feel like a terrible person. After all, Isao was her little angel. She held him in her arms when he was just a little baby, an infant—2,765 grams and 46 centimeters. That's how small he was when he was born, barely fitting in her hands, so light that she was afraid to accidentally let him go.
Kotobuki had been just as sweet and innocent, and she still was—it was just... her love for her brother had developed rapidly and become more like an obsession.
She felt awful... terribly awful... she wanted Isao to listen to her...
"Okay, okay. If you say so!" Kotobuki threw her hands up, saying this, then smiled innocently, looking at the ceiling with slightly half-closed eyes.
And Kyoko... she tiredly lowered her hands from Rin's head, continuing to brush her hair again.
But one thought wouldn't let her go: what would Isao think if she confessed to him that his mother was a woman fallen from love for her own child?
Would he look at her with disgust? Perhaps with pity? Or maybe... would he respond with his own love and care?
Something inside her tightened with anxiety, and at the same time, feeling that anxiety, she felt like vomiting.
Meanwhile, she didn't notice the slightly pitying smile on Kotobuki's face, who was glad she had managed to sow such dubious seeds in her mother's head out of love and understanding—since she, too, had gone through this same phase of denial and resistance when she realized her not-so-sisterly love for her brother...
Kotobuki wanted only one thing for her family: happiness! But until they all accepted who they were, none of them could be happy—especially Mom. Even though she tried not to feel love for Isao, her gaze became wistful every time she saw him spending time with another girl—a longing for him, because she understood she couldn't have what that girl had: specifically, ALL of Isao's love.
And she had simply sown those seeds to force her mother to finally look the truth in the eye, hoping only that she wouldn't accidentally break her family with her own hands, all while wishing to make everything better.
