Its parent comet is the Tempel–Tuttle. Every time it returns near the sun, it sheds some material under the influence of the solar wind, and when the Earth encounters these materials, a meteor shower occurs.
Because Leo is the radiant point, it's called the Leonids meteor shower. Unlike ordinary small-scale meteor showers, this is a large meteor storm, with many fireballs and bright meteors, some even brighter than the full moon.
