Valerie, accompanied by one of her "Security Advisors," made her way to a relatively intact control room. Though the glass windows were shattered, the structural integrity of the room remained solid.
She quickly checked the console; parts of the electrical grid had failed, but the backup power system was still functioning. Plugs into her data pad, she began synchronizing the battlefield telemetry.
The Eternal Seeker transmitted a more detailed distribution map of the Swarm. The data revealed that the Zerg forces surrounding the starport were primarily coming from three directions: the north (the main road leading to the residential sector), the east (a storage area choked with creep), and the west (several damaged hangars).
While the Swarm's numbers were steadily rising, heavy units like Ultralisks or Brood Lords had yet to make an appearance.
"Commander Raynor, I suggest prioritizing the clearance of the western hangars," Valerie said over the comm channel. "According to scan data, there are several small hive clusters actively spawning Zerglings there. Eliminating them will alleviate the pressure on your western defense line."
"Copy that," Raynor instantly adjusted his deployment. "Second Squad, with me to the western hangars! First Squad, keep holding the main entrance! Swann, pick up the pace on those turrets!"
"Finally, a real job!" Tychus roared with excitement. Clanking right behind Raynor, he charged toward the western hangars.
Valerie continued to monitor the tactical data. Her "Security Advisors" were demonstrating exceptional combat efficiency. To the east, two of her warriors coordinated with Swann's SCV engineering crew, utilizing precise fire to pick off any Zerg units attempting to draw near.
To the west, the other two warriors had already cleared a corridor and were systematically sweeping the hangars room by room. A5, who remained by her side, stood at the control room entrance like a statue, instantly neutralizing the stray Zerglings that managed to wander close.
Roughly twenty minutes later, the gunfire and explosions echoing from the western hangars began to die down.
Raynor's voice came through: "West side is clear. We found and neutralized four small hive clusters."
At the same time, Swann reported: "Eastern turrets are fixed! Powering up now!"
On the eastern side of the starport, two automated turrets hummed back to life. Their barrels spun, pouring a relentless stream of fire into the oncoming Swarm. The pressure on the defensive line immediately eased significantly.
"Good job!" Raynor returned to the main defense line. "Now, let's start carving out a corridor to the residential sector. Swann, are those bunker modules ready?"
"Ready to drop on your mark!" Swann replied.
"Deploy the first wave of bunkers five hundred meters outside the starport's north gate to establish our first intermediate outpost," Raynor pulled up the map. "Second Squad, escort the engineering crew forward. First Squad, provide suppressive cover fire."
The dropships ferried in more troops and bunker modules. Marines and Marauders locked into a wedge formation, beginning to clear the area outside the north gate. The SCV engineering mechs, hauling heavy bunker components, followed closely in their wake.
The Swarm's counterattack intensified instantly. More Zerglings and Hydralisks erupted from the ruins lining both sides of the main road, attempting to halt the humans from digging in.
Valerie watched the real-time tactical adjustments updates on her data pad. The Zerg reinforcements were arriving rapidly, but Raynor's troops pressed forward with absolute resolve. The bunker modules were quickly dropped into position, SCVs began welding them to the deck, and automated turrets were mounted at the pre-designated points.
"A1, A2, join the push and provide heavy fire support," Valerie ordered.
The two "Security Advisors" immediately left the eastern defense line to reinforce the advancing column. Their heavy bolters proved remarkably effective at shredding medium-armored units like Hydralisks, buying precious time for the engineering crew.
Fifteen minutes later, the first intermediate outpost was fully operational: three bunkers arranged in a triangular formation, complemented by automated turrets, forming a highly secure fire pocket.
"Outpost one is locked down!" Swann reported.
"Excellent! Keep pushing toward the residential sector, let's get the second outpost up!" Raynor commanded.
The troops continued their advance. However, the closer they drew to the residential sector, the fiercer the Zerg resistance became. Spine-chilling volleys of Hydralisk spines rained down like a storm, while Zerglings launched suicidal charges from every conceivable corner. The armor of several Marines began to hiss as it was eaten away by acid, forcing Medics to rush forward to administer emergency nanite treatments.
Valerie closely monitored the casualty data. The Raiders possessed solid tactical discipline, but attrition was inevitable when facing a swarm of this scale.
Just then, Dr. Hanson's anxious voice broke through the comm channel: "Commander Raynor! This is Ariel Hanson! We can see your advance! But the Zerg are stepping up their attacks on our final defense line! We can't hold out much longer!"
"Hang tight, Doctor!" Raynor responded. "We're setting up a secure corridor right now! Give us thirty more minutes!"
"We'll do our best!" Dr. Hanson's voice was nearly drowned out by background explosions and desperate screams.
Valerie pulled up a real-time scan of the residential sector. The flashes of the energy shields were growing increasingly faint, and the defensive perimeter was shrinking rapidly. The civilians were huddling inside a few structurally sound buildings, but the Zerg had already breached the outer ring.
She quickly assessed the situation, then patched through to Raynor: "Commander Raynor, according to our scans, there is an underground utility conduit on the southeast side of the residential sector that connects directly to the starport's old maintenance tunnels.
The diameter is sufficient for personnel transport, and the Swarm hasn't fully penetrated it yet. I recommend dispatching an elite squad through the conduit to infiltrate the residential sector, reinforce their defenses, and guide the civilians for evacuation."
Raynor immediately brought up the schematics. "Confirming the conduit location—it's there. Matt, verify this."
A few seconds later, Matt replied: "Conduit scan confirmed. The structure is mostly intact, and it empties out right beneath Warehouse B-7 in the residential sector. Zerg signatures are faint."
"Good," Raynor made a swift decision. "Tychus, take a squad through the underground conduit to the residential sector. Find Dr. Hanson and help them hold the line. We'll keep pushing from the front to establish the second outpost."
"Finally, something with a bit of a kick." Tychus slammed his visor shut. "Squad, on me!"
He picked out five veteran Marines, quickly breaking away from the main column to head toward the entrance of the southeastern utility conduit.
Valerie watched Tychus's squad disappear into the ruins, then redirected her attention to monitoring the frontal assault.
Securing the second outpost was proving far more grueling than the first. The Swarm seemed to realize the humans' intent and poured even more units into the blocking force. The number of Hydralisks spiked noticeably, and Roaches—heavily armored units with high resistance to light firearms—began anchoring the Zerg front.
"Marauders, focus your fire on those Roaches!" Raynor directed. "Marines, clear out the Zerglings! Medics, keep those heals flowing!"
Concussive grenades detonated among the Roach packs, shattering their thick carapaces and spraying green blood. Yet, the sheer number of Roaches dragged the advance to a crawl.
Valerie checked the time. Forty minutes had already slipped away. The energy signatures from the residential sector were steadily fading.
"A3, A4, move to the front line and assist with the armored units," she commanded.
The two "Security Advisors" were instantly redeployed from the western defense to join the frontal engagement. Their heavy bolters boasted far superior penetration against the Roaches' armor, and working in tandem with the Marauders' grenades, they quickly shattered the blocking force of Roaches.
"Second outpost, start deployment!" Swann shouted.
The SCV engineering mechs began locking the bunker modules into their new positions. But right at that moment, the ground beneath them began to violent shudder.
