Anna, her brown eyes fixed on the retreating figure of Keon, remained silent for a beat. She then shifted her gaze, meeting the eyes of Lilith, Mark, and Vera… a silent query passing between them, acknowledging the unsettling nature of Keon's final statement.
Lilith, ever the pragmatist, gave a sharp nod. "Let's go. We will see who is waiting for you. And I certainly want to know why he said that he was once a human."
With a shared sense of trepidation, the remaining subordinates follow in behind Keon.
The massive, reinforced outer chamber door of the Southern Exoshell 4.0 hissed open, revealing a long, sterile corridor bathed in soft, white light.
The air inside was regulated, devoid of the volatile atmospheric composition outside, yet heavy with unspoken threat. They walked with tight hearts, their senses alert, every sound of their footsteps echoing the silence of the immense machine-citadel.
Keon, moving with the perfect, fluid silence of his Bio Exoshell, led them deep into the core of the structure, stopping before a heavy, unassuming hatch marked
'HABITAT UNIT: HU1.'
He issued a silent command, and the hatch slid open, revealing a lounge area designed for biological comfort, complete with soft lighting, ergonomic furniture, and a panoramic viewport showing the turbulent ocean outside.
Sitting in the lounge, gazing thoughtfully at the churning sapphire waves, was a figure that instantly seized their attention.
"Aria!" Anna exclaimed, the name a raw burst of pure, overwhelming shock and relief.
Lilith, Mark, and Vera, standing shoulder to shoulder behind her, showed equally surprised expressions.
Aria, hearing the familiar, desperate sound of her sister's voice, glanced sharply toward the entrance. Her eyes, wide with disbelief, fixed on Anna standing there with Lilith and the others.
Excitement… the first true, untainted emotion she had felt since her captivity… spread across her face.
"Anna!"
She sprang up, traversing the short distance in a rush, and hugged Anna tightly, a desperate, shuddering embrace.
Lilith and the others watched the reunion, exchanging glances that held a mixture of confusion, relief, and profound suspicion regarding their captor.
After a moment, Lilith broke the silence, stepping forward. "Aria, it's good to see you alive, we thought that we lost you?"
Aria, still holding onto Anna, glanced at Lilith and nodded calmly, "I am fine, although he captured me, but he didn't harm me in any way."
After speaking, she recounted her experience, her voice shaking slightly but steadying as she spoke of Keon's identity, her understanding of him, and the deal between them in exchange for Anna's and her survival.
She spoke truthfully, confirming the impossible reality of Kai's annihilation and the merger of their worlds.
Just as Aria finished, Keon interjected, his voice calm and perfectly modulated. "I have fulfilled the promise, Aria. I have kept your sister, Anna, alive."
Their attention… Aria's and the others'... snapped toward him, a startling shift from familial reunion to the immediate, terrifying reality of their situation.
Keon raised his hand. A light-blue projection sprang from his palm, solidifying into a detailed, three-dimensional holographic map of the massive, newly transformed UHS1 planet, complete with the northern ice continent, the southern ocean, and the complex river networks.
"Now, I will give you two options," Keon stated, his voice a dispassionate pronouncement, addressing all four of them.
"Option one: if you desire no association with me, I will drop you in a location of your choice on this planet. You are free to reproduce and multiply as the normal human species you are, to create your own ethnicity and civilization as your population increases."
A subtle change ran through the group. The choice… a free life, even in a monstrously altered world… was palpable. Although the Lilith, Anna and Aria expressions were still tense and solemn, Vera's gaze inadvertently shifted to the only male among them, Mark.
Mark, the focus of Vera silent, primal desire for species continuity, was startled. He stared back at her intense expressions, then back at Keon, speechless and falling into a daze at the magnitude of the choice.
Keon ignored the unspoken tension of Lilith, twins and the subtle, biological reaction of Vera. He continued, speaking of the second option.
"Option two: you will stay here and work for me. You will not be slaves. I will hire you. I will ensure your survival and all necessary comforts. Simultaneously, I will allow you to utilize your abilities, granting you unimaginable powers through technological enhancement, and I will offer you access to my high-grade arsenal for your defense and utility."
Lilith and the others took a deep, collective breath. The second choice, while terrifyingly dangerous, offered purpose and a path to power far beyond simple survival in this new world.
Lilith, her eyes reflecting calculated thoughts regarding both options, walked forward.
"What will we have to do?" she asked, her voice steady. "What kind of work do you want us to perform?"
Keon's green lenses fixed on her and replied calmly. "Your main role will be as a special operations team. As of now, there is no task assigned. But I will soon assign you tasks you are worthy of… early tasks maybe related to the ongoing optimization of this new world."
Before Lilith could voice her reply… a reply that would have certainly involved further stipulations regarding autonomy and resources… Aria spoke. Her voice, though still strained from the emotional reunion, was firm.
"I will accept Option Two," Aria stated, taking a small step closer to Keon's figure. Her eyes, filled with a mixture of belief and profound trust born of her own solitary captivity, met Keon's lenses. "I choose to believe him."
Anna, her sister, observed Aria's conviction, then turned her focused brown eyes toward Keon. She can see that the memory of her sister's prolonged confinement should have fostered hate, yet the fact remained: Keon had not harmed Aria, and had instead facilitated their reunion.
"The fact that he didn't harm my sister despite capturing her, I am very grateful," Anna said, a soft but resolute nod following her words. "I will choose Option Two as well."
Lilith, the veteran leader of the field team, stood in silence for a few long, tense seconds. Her gaze swept over her companions: Aria, bound by strange trust; Anna, moved by familial loyalty; and the two remaining members, Mark and Vera, who were still processing the impossible reality. She took a deep, steadying breath.
"Very well," Lilith said, her voice dropping the combative edge in favor of pragmatism. "I also accept the second option."
The attention of the group, and Keon's cold, absolute focus, settled on the remaining two: Mark and Vera.
Mark, the quiet, physically dominant male of the group, stood motionless. His expression remained composed, yet a subtle disturbance was visible in the minute tightening around his jawline.
'Why? We are humans, we should stay united... She just said that she won't be a slave, then why? Why is she swearing allegiance now? A hypocrite bitch.'
A flicker of hidden annoyance coursed through his heart. The three women… Lilith, Anna, and Aria… had just collectively rejected the primal, suitable option for them presented by Keon, the option where they would live freely and he would have become the singular anchor for the human race's survival in this new world.
He knew, with a certainty that ran deep in his heart, that this calculated rejection was a choice to rely on the unknown and strange robot over him, the last available human male, who they should trust and rely on most in this situation.
