Chapter 49 - Chapter 1.5 – Stage Directions

Jeremy Chapi

Our arrival by bus didn't go unnoticed.

A handful of journalists had already gathered outside, but they were visibly disappointed when they realized we weren't heading toward the main entrance. Instead, our convoy turned toward the rear of the imposing building.

Its wooden roof stretched gracefully outward, shaped like a sprawling vine leaf, while the stone walls were adorned with elegant carved patterns flowing in gentle curves.

The wrought-iron gates slowly opened before us. At their center stood the Rod of Asclepius, enclosed within a bronze ring.

Beyond the barriers, cameras flashed relentlessly as reporters struggled to capture whatever glimpse they could.

The moment I stepped off the bus, I instinctively headed toward my daughter.

Even though her message had reassured me that everything had gone well with the Pavel family, I wanted to see for myself.

Before I could reach her, Vivian caught hold of my left arm.

"Easy there, Papa Bear," she teased with a grin. "She's not going anywhere."

"Vivian... please, let go," I replied through a pained grimace.

Her grip wasn't strong...

But it pressed directly against my weakened arm.

"Oh no... did I hurt you?" she asked, releasing me immediately, genuine concern replacing her playful expression.

"I've been through worse," I answered, trying to brush the pain aside.

She studied me for a brief moment before speaking again, her tone far more sincere.

"Take a breath."

"Look at what's happening."

"Don't rush over to them just yet."

From where I stood, I could see the ramp leading down from the bus.

The security officers quietly moved into position while the Pavel family stepped out with great care, staying close to their daughter.

Iris followed beside them.

I immediately noticed the change in Pavel's expression.

The hardness in his face had softened.

The dark circles beneath his eyes were still there, but he was walking beside Iris now, speaking with her in a calm voice.

The sight filled me with relief.

At least one burden had been lifted...

Even if the greatest trial still lay ahead.

"Well," I said quietly as I approached them, "I hope you're all ready for what's coming."

"We are," Elowen answered with quiet determination.

"We'll do our very best."

Her parents silently nodded in agreement.

Together, we entered the building.

The oppressive silence inside the conference hall stood in stark contrast to the storm raging within my mind.

Every pair of eyes seemed fixed on me, piercing through every layer of confidence I had tried so hard to build.

I had dreaded this moment for weeks.

Yet there was no avoiding it.

Before me sat some of the world's most respected physicians...

Visionary researchers...

And skeptical critics who had come determined to challenge every claim I made.

The stakes could not have been higher.

Today, I was about to present the miracle remedy—

An innovation I knew would forever change the course of humanity.

I drew a slow, steady breath.

Every movement.

Every word.

Every hesitation.

Would be observed...

Analyzed...

Judged.

Yet none of that was what weighed most heavily upon me.

No.

What haunted me was something else entirely.

This remedy...

Would be demonstrated on someone I had come to consider a true friend.

Elowen.

On the stage, surrounded by state-of-the-art medical equipment, rested a sealed case under Vivian's watchful eye.

Inside lay the remedy that had already sparked countless controversies...

And inspired just as many hopes.

The cold lighting cast the entire stage in an almost theatrical atmosphere.

I immediately recognized my daughter's touch.

She was controlling the auditorium's entire lighting system while simultaneously translating my words for the international audience.

Only Iris could have coordinated everything with such flawless precision.

Like the conductor of an orchestra.

I stood tall, dressed in a simple yet elegant suit.

My hands trembled ever so slightly, betraying the anxiety building inside me as I faced the audience.

But my eyes never left them.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"Thank you for being here today."

"What you are about to witness is not merely the result of years of scientific research."

"It is also the embodiment of a vision."

"A dream born from the hope of giving humanity a second chance."

A quiet murmur rippled through the auditorium.

I had captured their attention.

But I knew...

This was only the beginning.

"Before we go any further..."

"I would like to introduce the woman who chose to stand before you today."

"She helped create this remedy."

"Not merely as a patient..."

"But as a human being determined to break free from the chains that have bound her for far too long."

I turned toward the entrance.

"Elowen..."

"If you would, please."

The side doors slowly opened.

Elowen entered, accompanied by a team of medical professionals.

Her movements were slow...

Yet filled with quiet determination.

A soft mechanical hum accompanied the steady motion of her powered wheelchair.

Every eye in the auditorium turned toward her.

Some watched with curiosity.

Others with apprehension.

I stepped forward and gently rested a hand on her shoulder.

"Elowen is far more than a clinical case."

"She is a symbol."

"A symbol of courage..."

"And of faith in what the future can become."

A quiet murmur spread through the audience as every gaze settled on the young woman before them.

There was a remarkable depth in her eyes.

And an unmistakable determination to see this through to the very end.

The medical team moved swiftly into position.

Under my daughter's careful supervision, the giant screens projected close-up images throughout the auditorium while the monitoring equipment was connected to track Elowen's vital signs.

The tension had become almost unbearable.

Standing before the audience, I knew that every second from this point onward would matter.

"What we are about to undertake is not without risk."

I allowed the words to settle before continuing.

"But if we succeed..."

"This will become a breakthrough unlike anything humanity has ever witnessed."

"Not only for Elowen..."

"But for millions of lives."

I drew one final breath.

"Whether you believe in this vision or not..."

"Today marks a turning point."

"A moment when each of us must decide..."

"Will we remain mere spectators..."

"Or will we become the architects of a future we still have the power to change?"

Seated a short distance behind us on the stage, Elowen's parents watched in silence, their anxiety written plainly across their faces.

I motioned for Vivian to step forward with the sealed case.

She placed it before me and quietly opened it.

Inside rested two small vials, each no larger than my thumb.

I lifted the first one for the audience to see.

Its liquid shimmered with a golden hue.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"This is Gaia's Blood."

I then raised the second vial.

Its contents glowed with a deep sapphire blue.

"And this..."

"...is Gaia's Tears."

"Taken separately, these compounds have no therapeutic effect."

"But once united..."

"They initiate an advanced process of tissue regeneration and cellular therapy unlike anything medicine has ever achieved."

"They also stimulate several essential genetic pathways, including IL-10, p53, and many others."

I picked up a syringe from the table beside me and carefully drew the contents of the golden vial before opening the blue one.

"For the treatment to work..."

"These two compounds must combine inside the patient's body."

As I spoke, I slowly walked toward Elowen.

She looked at me with such unwavering determination that my hands began to tremble.

What...

...was I about to do?

My breathing became uneven.

Instinctively, I turned toward Pavel.

He hadn't moved.

His eyes remained fixed on me.

Every line on his face reflected the fear he was struggling to contain.

"Father..."

Iris's voice echoed softly through my earpiece.

"Pull yourself together."

Her words brought me back to the present.

Then Elowen looked straight into my eyes.

Her expression was impossibly calm.

"Do it."

I swallowed hard.

Without taking my eyes off her, I handed her the blue vial.

She drank it slowly.

"...That's strange."

"It feels so cool."

A faint smile touched her lips.

Mine never did.

"The first component of the remedy must be taken orally," I explained, forcing my voice to remain steady. "The second must enter the bloodstream."

I gently tapped the syringe to drive out the last remaining air bubbles before kneeling in front of Elowen.

Discreetly, I covered my lapel microphone with one hand, muting my voice from the audience.

"You can still stop this," I whispered.

"You don't have to go through with it."

I lowered my eyes, ashamed of my own hesitation.

Who was I really trying to protect...?

Her...

Or myself?

"Stop underestimating me, Jeremy," she replied, her voice firm.

"I want this too."

"With all my heart."

"Do you honestly think this is living?"

"I've spent my entire life trapped inside this chair."

"I've watched my parents carry my burden every single day."

"So stop losing your nerve in front of me..."

"And respect my decision."

She held my gaze without the slightest hesitation.

Then, even more firmly, she said,

"Look at me."

I slowly raised my eyes.

There wasn't the slightest trace of fear in hers.

Only determination.

Without another word...

I guided the needle into the delicate vein of her left arm...

And slowly injected the remedy.

A shiver swept through the entire auditorium.

I found myself holding my breath.
