Chapter 24 - BENEATH THE ACADEMY

"Aiden..."

The whisper came again.

Soft.

Distant.

Impossible.

Yet unmistakably real.

The sound seemed to rise from beneath the academy itself, slipping through the cracks in reality like water finding its way through stone.

The council heard it too.

For the first time, their perfect composure faltered.

Only for a second.

But a second was enough.

Seraphine saw it.

Aiden saw it.

And whatever confidence the council had been wearing suddenly looked thinner than before.

"We need to move. Now."

Seraphine didn't wait for an answer.

She grabbed Aiden's hand and pulled him toward the side corridor.

The frozen students remained motionless.

The council did not pursue.

That frightened Aiden more than if they had.

They simply watched.

As if they already knew where he was going.

The corridor twisted sharply.

Then twisted again.

The deeper they ran, the less familiar the academy became.

The polished walls disappeared.

The banners vanished.

The symbols of the Choir grew fewer and fewer until eventually they were gone entirely.

Only stone remained.

Ancient stone.

Stone that looked older than the academy itself.

Aiden's breathing grew heavier.

"What is this place?"

Seraphine slowed.

Her eyes scanned the walls.

Searching.

Remembering.

"I don't know its original name."

Aiden frowned.

"Original?"

She nodded.

"The academy wasn't built here."

Aiden stopped walking.

"What?"

Seraphine looked at him.

"The academy was built over it."

The words hit harder than expected.

Built over it.

Not beside it.

Not around it.

Over it.

Like a grave.

A chill crept up Aiden's spine.

Ahead of them, the corridor opened into a circular chamber.

Unlike the academy above, this room showed no signs of modern construction.

The walls were covered in strange markings.

Symbols.

Names.

Thousands of them.

Carved by countless hands across countless years.

Aiden stepped closer.

Most of the names were damaged.

Scratched out.

Broken.

Erased.

Just like memories.

Just like people.

"What is this?"

His voice echoed through the chamber.

Seraphine remained near the entrance.

Her expression darkened.

"This is where they buried them."

Aiden turned.

"Buried who?"

For a moment, Seraphine didn't answer.

Then her gaze moved across the countless carved names.

"The unwritten."

The chamber suddenly felt much colder.

Aiden looked back at the wall.

There were more names than he could count.

Thousands.

Maybe millions.

Every surface was covered.

As though entire generations had been erased and hidden beneath the academy.

A low vibration shook the room.

The same vibration he had felt near the corridor.

The same vibration from the fountain.

The same vibration from the crack in the hall.

Something beneath them was moving.

Slowly.

Awakening.

Then Aiden noticed something.

Near the center of the chamber.

One name.

Unlike the others.

It wasn't scratched out.

It wasn't damaged.

It looked untouched.

Protected.

Waiting.

His heartbeat quickened.

Without realizing it, he stepped closer.

The name was written in symbols he didn't understand.

Yet somehow...

He could read it.

The moment his eyes focused on it, the letters shifted.

Changed.

Rearranged.

Until they formed a word.

One name.

His name.

AIDEN

The chamber fell silent.

Seraphine froze.

The vibration stopped.

Even the air seemed to hold its breath.

Aiden stared at the name.

Unable to look away.

Then the stone beneath it cracked.

A thin line spread outward.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Like something on the other side was opening a door.

And from the darkness below came a voice.

Not a whisper this time.

Not distant.

Not weak.

Awake.

Waiting.

And speaking directly to him.

"At last."

The chamber trembled.

The crack widened.

And something began to rise from beneath the academy.
