Chapter 26 - Chapter 26

The car glided to a stop in front of the nightclub, where neon lights pulsed like an artificial heart in the night. The line outside was long, packed with well-dressed people trying to look more important than they actually were. Massive security guards controlled the entrance with the standard expression of people who judged human worth based on the watch on someone's wrist.

Marina parked the car, taking a deep breath.

"Last chance to back out," Philip said as he opened the door. "We can go back, order dessert, and pretend those idiots never called."

"Too late," she replied, turning off the engine. "I've already come this far."

They stepped out together.

Some people in line looked automatically—first at the car, then at Philip, then at Marina. It was the kind of silent attention that subtly changed the atmosphere around them.

Philip leaned slightly toward her.

"See? It's already started. Posture. Shoulders straight. Face that says, 'I could pay this place's rent if I wanted to.'"

"I don't know how to make that face."

"I do. You just walk."

They headed toward the entrance. The security guard raised a hand, ready to stop them with the classic "line's over there."

Philip didn't even slow down. He simply pulled the car key from his pocket and spun it around his finger like it was the most natural thing in the world.

The guard looked at the key. Then at the car behind them. Then silently stepped aside.

"Good evening."

"Good evening," Philip replied, as if this happened every day.

As soon as they passed, Marina whispered:

"That actually worked?"

"Confidence, Marina. Ninety percent of life is looking like you belong somewhere."

They entered.

The music was loud, lights sliced through the air, people danced, laughed, pretended intimacy. Philip scanned the environment like an analyst searching for bugs.

"Okay… where are our main actors…"

Marina pointed discreetly.

In one of the side VIP booths, Mac sat surrounded by his friends. Charlote was beside him, posture flawless, expression sweet, as if she hadn't spent the entire day manipulating reality itself.

Philip smirked.

"Oh… perfect. Everyone together. Makes my job easier."

Marina took a deep breath. Her hands trembled slightly, but she didn't back away.

Philip spoke quietly, just for her to hear:

"Remember. Near me, the system can't freeze you. If you want to talk, talk. If you want to ignore them, ignore them. Tonight, you decide."

She nodded.

And then the two of them walked straight toward the group.
