Chapter 60 - Chapter 59: Downfall

The sky over Neo-Verdia was a bruised purple, choked with the black smoke of falling Pioneer units. In the center of the chaos, the White Gundam its eyes glowing a haunting sapphire blue was locked in a death struggle with the Polar White Gundam. The screech of metal grinding against metal echoed through the city canyons as Airis, operating with a pure machine-logic fueled by a sister's love, pushed Dr. Lena's unit back.

On a nearby rooftop, Zaki didn't look back. He had Aurora draped over one shoulder and Tasya leaning heavily against the other. "Keep moving! We can't stay in the blast zone!"

Suddenly, the roar of massive thrusters drowned out the sound of distant explosions. The Sunflower Gundam descended from the clouds, its golden armor scorched but intact. Augustina lowered the unit's massive hand toward the roof.

"Get in! Now!" Augustina's voice was sharp, commanding.

As they scrambled into the safety of the Sunflower's cockpit area, a series of heavy shells streaked past them, slamming into the Polar White's shield and forcing it to break its grapple with the White Gundam. It was Feres, piloting her Bishop Custom. She hovered nearby, her heavy cannons smoking.

"Back off, you white monster!" Feres yelled over the open channel. "I don't care who you are, stay away from our Ghost!"

Inside the Polar White, Dr. Lena Lowe growled, her fingers dancing over the controls to recalibrate for a multi-target engagement. "Insects... you think a few cannons will stop me from taking my daughter?"

She was about to ignite her thrusters for a lethal lunge when a holographic window snapped open in her HUD. The cold, calculated face of Dr. Armen Itsuki stared back at her.

"Lena. Cease your pursuit. Retreat immediately," Armen commanded.

"No! I have her right here, Armen! I can end the White Ghost now!"

"Look at your tactical map, you fool," Armen sneered. "The Jupiter fleet has broken. Prince William and Princess Olive have been retrieved, and their King has ordered a full withdrawal. If you stay, the entire Neo-Verdia defense force will converge on your position. You are a scientist, not a martyr. Return to the Atlantic base. That is an order."

Lena looked at the White Gundam, which was standing its ground despite the sparks leaping from its joints. She looked at the Sunflower Gundam retreating into the distance. With a scream of pure frustration, she slammed her fist against the console.

"This isn't over, Tasya!" Lena hissed.

The Polar White Gundam ignited its secondary boosters and shot into the clouds, vanishing toward the ocean in a blur of white light.

The battlefield went silent. The White Gundam, now alone in the sky, flickered. The sapphire light in its eyes dimmed, turned green, and then faded to black. The massive machine drifted downward, landing on its knees in the middle of a deserted plaza with a heavy, final thud. It was dead silent a hollow shell of lunar titanium.

The aftermath was a grim symphony of sirens and recovery crews. The Neo-Verdia Alliance began the arduous task of cleaning up the wreckage. Survivors from the Jupiter Pioneer units were being pulled from their cockpits; those wounded were sent to emergency clinics, while the able-bodied were taken into custody by the city's military.

In the high courts of the other Space Colonies, the mood was different. The Kings of Mars and Mercury watched the recorded footage of the Jupiter defeat with mocking laughter.

"To think the proud Solva line was humbled by a 'Ghost' and a bunch of Earth-bound rats," the Martian King chuckled, swirling his wine.

But behind the laughter, there was a growing shadow of fear. The "White Ghost" was no longer a myth; it was a symbol that was inspiring rebellion across the colonies. If the White Bird wasn't plucked from the sky soon, the very foundations of the Colonial Empire would crumble.

Back at the White Ark hangar, the mood was somber.

The hangar was a hive of activity. Medics moved quickly, and transport helicopters were dropping off damaged parts. Maki, having finally left the medical room after staying by Agnes's side, ran onto the hangar floor just as Zaki and Tasya stepped off the Sunflower's lift.

Maki didn't say a word; she just threw her arms around both of them, sobbing with relief. "You're alive... you're actually okay..."

But her relief turned to confusion when she saw a third pilot being carried on a stretcher by Zaki. As the medics pulled the helmet off the unconscious pilot, Maki gasped.

"Aurora?!" Maki's eyes widened. "She was the one in the seat? Why didn't you tell me?!"

Zaki looked down at his boots, his face pale. He walked over to Mili Anveil, Aurora's mother, who was waiting by the medical bay.

"Mrs. Mili... I'm sorry," Zaki said, his voice cracking. "I couldn't protect her from the jammer. I should have seen it coming."

Mili reached out and gently shook her head, her expression weary but kind. "It wasn't your fault, Zaki. None of us expected a weapon designed specifically to target Mind Space users. Aurora knew the risks. She chose to stand by you."

Tasya stood off to the side, her arms wrapped around herself. She was staring at nothing, her mind replaying the cold, mechanical voice of her mother. She was now an enemy of her own blood. Maki noticed and walked over, placing a hand on Tasya's shoulder. Maki didn't know the whole story yet, but she knew the weight of despair when she saw it.

Suddenly, a loud metallic clatter drew everyone's attention to the White Gundam.

The technicians had forced the cockpit open. They weren't pulling out a human, but the limp, synthetic body of Airis. Her skin was flickering with static, and faint wisps of smoke rose from her neck ports. Her neural circuits were firing uncontrollably, her body twitching in a violent seizure of data overload.

"Airis!" Airi Kimeza screamed, running toward the android. "Careful with her! Get her to the mainframe lab immediately! If her core temperature doesn't drop, we'll lose her entire memory partition!"

As the team rushed Airis away, Klaus approached Zaki. He placed a heavy, firm hand on his son's shoulder.

"You did the best you could, Zaki," Klaus said softly. "Go rest. Let the specialists handle the repairs."

Zaki didn't move. He looked at his hands—hands that had gripped the controls while others suffered. He saw Maki's courage, Aurora's sacrifice, and Tasya's unique gift. They all had a "connection" to the Mind Space a power that made them special.

And what am I? Zaki thought bitterly. I'm just a pilot who keeps letting his family get hurt. He felt a crushing sense of weakness, a realization that in a world of geniuses and "chosen" souls, he was just a boy in a machine.

Thousands of miles away, deep in the Atlantic Ocean, the Polar White Gundam hissed as it was locked into its docking bay.

Dr. Lena Lowe stepped out of the cockpit, her face as cold as the Arctic water outside. She walked down the gantry toward Dr. Armen Itsuki, who was waiting with a dark, satisfied smirk.

"The data you gathered on the White Ghost's autonomous behavior is invaluable, Lena," Armen said. "Welcome back."

Lena didn't smile. She looked back at her Gundam, then at the dark depths of the ocean. "The next time we meet, Tasya... there will be no retreat."

To be continued...
