Chapter 4 - The Rift Unsealed

This is the turning point.

The veil does not just thin. It trembles.

The Scripture no longer whispers. It commands.

Power begins to break its boundaries.

Max stands at a divine threshold.

And not everyone will walk away untouched.

"No," I whisper, pressing closer to the darkness holding Luke. "You don't get to take him."

Gold erupts across my skin.

The Living Scripture unfurls along my arms in streams of awakened text, every symbol moving with a purpose I can feel long before I understand it. The Decrees flare among them, responding to the unnatural grip buried around Luke as though something inside the Scripture has already judged what stands before me.

My fingers find the El-Rah symbol.

The gate between realms answers beneath my touch, and I reach through it with one thought burning above every other.

Give him back.

The air shudders.

Blackness convulses around Luke, its solid surface buckling as fractures race through the mass. Something pushes against me from the other side, vast and furious, tightening its hold while the Living Scripture brightens across my arms.

Apparently, it has mistaken resistance for leverage.

A dangerous smile pulls at my mouth.

"You know, holding him tighter was a fascinating choice."

The darkness strains against the gold.

I press harder against El-Rah.

"Here's the part you're going to regret."

Golden Scripture gathers around my wrist, every symbol blazing brighter as the pressure between us climbs.

"You can release Luke while I'm still asking nicely..."

My smile widens.

"...or I can introduce you to every glowing word on my body personally."

The black mass recoils.

"Oh, good. We understand each other."

My fingers burn against the symbol.

"Now give him back."

I push harder.

The Decree answers.

Golden Scripture surges from my skin and drives into the black mass, branching through it in lines of living law. Darkness twists around every glyph, trying to close over them, yet the words continue deeper, reaching through layer after layer until gold burns inside something that has swallowed every trace of light around it.

Then the Scripture begins to rewrite.

Corruption peels away wherever the glyphs pass. Black folds inward, loses shape and breaks apart as the truth carried within those golden words reaches whatever lie has given the darkness form.

Luke falls through.

Alec catches him before his body reaches the ground.

Luke drags in a broken breath, his chest jerking beneath Alec's hands while the remaining darkness tears away from him. Golden script withdraws from the fractured mass and streams back toward me, disappearing beneath my skin one glowing line at a time.

A sound escapes somewhere behind me, too unsteady to become a word.

The darkness recoils.

For several heartbeats, the entire passage seems to understand something I barely do.

The Living Scripture has spoken.

Alec lowers Luke carefully and checks his breathing while Samantha hurries toward them. She reaches his side on shaking legs, drops to her knees and presses both hands over his chest.

Her lips begin moving.

The first prayer barely reaches me.

The second fades beneath her breath.

Her hands start trembling.

"Samantha."

She tries again, forcing what little remains of her energy toward Luke, but her arms buckle before the prayer can take hold.

Samuel reaches her first. He catches her beneath one arm and eases her away from Luke before exhaustion can drag her down beside him.

"I've got him, Sam." His voice stays low and steady. "You've given enough. Let me carry this one."

For a second, she looks ready to argue. Whatever she sees in Samuel's face changes her mind. She nods and allows him to guide her against one of the enormous roots bordering the passage.

Samuel takes her place beside Luke.

His hands hover over Luke's chest as an ancient prayer moves quietly from his lips. A soft glow gathers beneath his palms, spreading through the dark stains clinging to Luke's aura until one smudge after another begins to fade.

Luke's breathing deepens.

Alec looks up at me.

Relief hits so hard my knees nearly give way.

Luke has a chance.

The thought lasts only long enough for another name to tear straight through it.

Eric.

My attention snaps toward the passage ahead.

If whatever lives inside this place almost took Luke, Eric and the others could already be facing the same thing.

I force myself upright despite the weakness dragging through my legs. "We need to move. Luke's breathing, Samuel has him, and Eric is still out there."

Alec nods and lifts Luke carefully onto his back. Around us, the others are already gathering themselves, fear changing shape now that it has somewhere to go.

Eric.

His name moves through all of us.

Alec catches my shoulder before I can push ahead and pulls me against him for one brief second.

"Max."

I look up.

"Eric's one of the best we have." His expression carries more confidence than I currently possess. "After what you just did, I'm starting to think the devil should be worried about us."

A breath of laughter escapes me despite the fear clawing at my chest. "Please don't invite him."

Alec's mouth twitches. "Consider the invitation withdrawn."

We push deeper into the passage, picking up speed as the path begins dipping toward a clearing roughly a hundred meters ahead. Twisted roots crowd its edges while shifting darkness moves between them, swallowing pieces of the ground before releasing them again.

Samantha stiffens beside Samuel and points toward movement breaking through the right-hand side. "There. I saw something."

Hope hits hard enough to hurt.

Please let it be Eric.

We take the incline at full speed, boots tearing through loose earth while branches whip past my shoulders. The clearing opens beneath us in violent glimpses between the roots, giving me flashes of bodies locked in combat, bursts of light and blackness surging between them.

My heart slams harder.

I search every moving figure until one finally tears through the confusion.

Eric.

Relief almost buckles my stride.

He stands in the heart of the clearing, bruised, filthy and very much alive, fighting like the battlefield owes him money.

His team has been forced into a tightening formation, bruised and ragged beneath an assault that gives them barely enough time to breathe between attacks. Luke's absence has carved a visible weakness through their defense, leaving Campbell crouched behind the front line with exhaustion dragging at his shoulders while another prayer struggles through his pale lips.

Eric, Leila and Bruce hold the remaining line together.

The darkness changes in front of them.

Black matter rises from the ground in thick columns, stretching higher as crude bodies begin taking shape within it. Shoulders broaden beneath slick surfaces. Heads wrench into place while unfinished arms divide into hands and fingers. Featureless faces turn toward the warriors with an imitation of human attention that sends cold racing across my skin.

My stride falters long enough for the truth to catch me.

It has changed since Luke.

Those things have watched us defend ourselves, studied how our bodies move and learned which shapes give them an advantage.

The abyss is learning from us.

"Sams, support their line the second we reach them!"

Samantha gathers whatever strength remains and drives herself harder down the incline.

Alec changes beside me.

White light erupts through his aura as electric blue branches across his body, every violent current gathering into the Warform I have seen tear through enemies before. The pressure around him spikes hard enough to scatter loose earth beneath our feet.

He lowers Luke beside Samuel and gives him one quick look. "Watch him for me, yeah?"

Samuel barely has time to nod.

Alec launches himself into the clearing.

The impact tears through the battlefield.

A shockwave explodes outward from where he lands, ripping several shadow creatures apart before they can complete their charge. Others vanish inside the blast as fractures split through the darkness around them, their sharp echoes cracking between the trees like thunder trapped inside glass.

The black mass recoils from him, dragging half-formed bodies back into itself as the entire clearing seems to convulse.

I keep running.

Eric turns at the sound of Alec's arrival, and whatever battle-hardened response he prepares disappears when he sees me coming.

I hit him with absolutely no grace.

My arms lock around his chest before either of us can say a word, and the force of it drives him back half a step. Blood and sweat cling to him beneath something achingly familiar, something so unmistakably Eric that the fear I've carried since finding Luke finally breaks apart inside me.

He is here.

He is breathing.

He is alive in my arms.

His arms loosen around me as his attention travels across the clearing again, automatically taking stock of everyone who has reached us.

I feel the moment he starts counting.

His gaze passes over Alec before moving to Samuel and Samantha. Luke lies several meters behind them, frighteningly still against the earth, although the shallow rise beneath his chest confirms he is breathing. Relief touches Eric's expression before his attention continues through the others.

He searches once.

Then again.

His eyes return to mine, and whatever warmth remained there disappears.

"I don't see Jamey."

The words tear straight through the relief I had managed to hold together.

My throat closes around the answer, forcing me to swallow before I can get it out. "He was taken."

His expression hardens.

"A demonic entity came through during a house clearing and dragged him into this place. We followed before the opening closed, but we lost him somewhere inside."

The admission burns all the way up my throat.

"We're still looking for him."

Understanding moves through his face without another question. His arms close around me again, holding me through the few seconds I need while battle continues raging around us.

I allow myself those seconds because Eric has always been one of the few people who can see me falling apart without making me feel weaker for it.

When I finally pull away, his attention shifts toward Luke. "He's breathing?"

"Samuel got to him in time."

Relief passes through him before Samantha suddenly staggers nearby. Samuel catches her beneath the arms and lowers her carefully beside Luke, exhaustion showing in the effort as he divides what remains of his strength between them.

The sight tells all of us the same thing.

Time is running out.

He keeps one arm around my shoulders as we cross toward Luke, then crouches and presses two fingers against his neck. The pulse he finds eases some of the tension from his face before those storm-grey eyes lift toward me again.

"We were trying to break through the veil before you reached us. Jamey's still somewhere beyond it, so what's the play?"

Of course he asks for a plan.

Wondering has never suited him when something can still be done.

I swallow against the pressure tightening my throat and look toward the darkness surrounding the clearing. "I have one move left."

His eyes narrow slightly. "How bad?"

A laugh almost finds me before exhaustion swallows it. "Ask me when it works."

Something in his expression tells me he hates that answer.

He lets me try anyway.

I close my eyes and draw the deepest breath my aching chest will allow.

Gold rises beneath my skin.

The Living Scripture flows along my arms in streams of molten words, its symbols rearranging themselves faster than I can follow. Ancient language gathers into patterns I have never learned, yet understanding travels through me with every changing line, carrying an instruction that feels strangely close to instinct.

My right hand lifts with the palm facing upward as the Key of Thah'mir ignites across it.

Its glow pulses beneath my skin like a second heartbeat, carrying an awareness beyond anything I know how to name. I press my left index finger against its center and draw outward.

The Decree answers.

Golden writing spills from my palm in long spiraling currents, twisting around itself before separating into countless threads. Each one moves with unmistakable purpose, spreading through the clearing and disappearing into spaces beyond the reach of my eyes.

The Living Scripture begins searching.

Its threads descend through soil, stone and tangled roots as easily as sunlight crossing water. Others disappear beyond the physical boundaries of the clearing, slipping through unseen layers while every movement travels back through my body.

I feel them reaching farther.

I feel them searching deeper.

One suddenly jerks tight.

The force tears a gasp from me as resistance races through the connection and locks around my arm. My fingers curl instinctively while the golden thread trembles between my hand and whatever it has touched beyond the veil.

Something is hiding there.

Whatever has concealed itself feels the Scripture searching and pulls harder, dragging against the golden line with enough force to make every symbol across my arm flare.

Then fear pours through me.

My breath catches as the emotion arrives with a familiarity that hurts far more than the connection itself.

"Jamey."

Eric steps closer. "You found him?"

His voice already sounds distant.

The connection opens wider, allowing pain to follow the fear until my knees threaten to buckle beneath both. Something has wrapped itself around Jamey, restraining his body while burying every trace of his presence beneath layers designed to keep us searching forever.

The Scripture continues following him.

A spark of defiance survives somewhere beneath the pain.

Pfft. You really thought you could hide him from this?

Gold flares above my collarbone.

Another symbol begins moving beneath my skin, climbing in fluid strokes toward the edge of my hairline. Heat follows its path until the final line forms and understanding arrives with it.

Ayt-Oor carries the authority of the Pathfinder and the Revealer.

My fingers press against the glowing mark.

The golden connection immediately changes beneath my touch, thickening as the narrow tether widens through the unseen layers separating us. What began as a path grows strong enough to carry something far greater than awareness between two places.

The Scripture is building a bridge.

Pressure gathers behind my eyes as the golden current drives deeper. Layer after layer opens before it while my awareness follows, leaving the clearing increasingly distant as Jamey's presence grows stronger.

The thread pulses against my hand once before answering again.

Its rhythm changes.

My heart stumbles when I understand what has joined mine through the connection.

Jamey's heartbeat travels through the Scripture.

His fear reaches me with the suffocating force of cold water filling my lungs. Pain follows through every golden line, dragging echoes of his injuries into my body until separating his suffering from mine becomes almost impossible.

Something heavier waits beneath both.

Despair has already found him.

He thinks we're never coming.

Hold on, Jamey. We're here.

I have no idea whether the thought reaches him, yet his heartbeat answers through the thread, weakened by whatever has been done to him while still fighting to continue.

The bridge shudders beneath another wave of resistance.

Gold flickers across my arms as strength drains from me faster than my body can replace it. Finding him has created the path between us, yet bringing him home demands something greater.

Heat tears across my lower lip.

El Rah forms there in blazing strokes, each line carrying another understanding through me as pain spreads along my jaw.

The gate between realms has answered.

My hand closes around the golden thread while ancient words gather somewhere deeper than thought. Their sounds mean nothing to my mind, although the realm surrounding us seems to understand them before they ever reach my lips.

I speak the command.

The realm answers with violence.

A deafening crack tears through the clearing as the earth bucks beneath us and the air splits along the golden bridge. Living Scripture blazes through the fracture, widening it with every word while the Decrees across my skin ignite together.

Pain follows immediately.

The connection reaches deeper into me and draws strength faster than I can give it. Heat races through my veins while blood floods my mouth, leaving a sharp metallic taste across my tongue.

Someone shouts my name through the roar of breaking space.

My vision fractures around the edges as white-gold light consumes the clearing. Every fraction the bridge widens pulls something more from me until breathing itself feels tied to the opening.

My legs buckle beneath the strain.

Hands catch me from behind, keeping my body upright while my grip remains locked around the golden thread.

Jamey's heartbeat reaches me again.

Its weakened rhythm carries fear, pain and the stubborn proof that he is still fighting somewhere beyond the veil.

That heartbeat decides everything.

Take whatever you need from me.

Gold erupts across my vision.

The rift tears open as something on the other side fights against the Scripture, wrenching hard enough to send agony through my arm.

I tighten my grip.

"Give him back!"

The Decree surges through the opening.

A body crashes through the gold.

Eric moves before my exhausted mind can catch up, lunging forward and catching Jamey as his legs collapse beneath him. Torn clothing hangs from his battered body while blood stains the fabric, yet his chest rises against the arms holding him.

A broken sound escapes me somewhere between laughter and a sob.

"We got you."

For one precious heartbeat, relief takes everything else away.

Then the man holding Jamey looks beyond him.

His expression changes.

My eyes follow his.

The rift remains open, its golden edges straining against darkness gathering on the other side. Something immense moves beyond the threshold, forcing the Scripture wider as a shape begins emerging through the light.

One hand crosses into our realm.

Another follows.

The figure steps through.

The Living Scripture recoils across my skin so violently that my breath catches.

Whatever followed Jamey home has frightened something I thought feared nothing.

Max did not just use power.

She became it.

And power, especially divine power, always takes its due.

If this chapter left you shaken, that is no accident.

The Living Scripture does not move without consequence.

And Max is learning that the cost of deliverance is never cheap.

Thank you for staying with her. With all of them.

This story is no longer just about spirits.

It is about survival when the soul is torn between duty and collapse.

Take a breath.

The next chapter brings answers... but not peace.
