Chapter 29 - Chapter 29

The Null Sanctum was nothing like I imagined.

And I was the one who imagined it.

Or rather, I hadn't. Not really. The Grey Shadow Forest was one of those locations I'd written about in passing—a few paragraphs, a couple of danger warnings in the worldbuilding notes, and then I'd moved on to more important things. I never gave it depth. Never gave it detail.

But standing here, at the very center of it, I understood something that made my blood run cold.

This place had built itself.

The walls around us weren't stone or wood or anything natural. They were made of compressed darkness—dense, almost solid, pulsing faintly with a rhythm that was too slow to be a heartbeat but too deliberate to be nothing. The air tasted like iron and static. And ahead of us, past the last corridor of that darkness, was a chamber that seemed to go on forever.

We'd made it through the trials.

Barely.

[ Current status: All team members alive. ]

[ Injuries: Significant across all units. ]

[ Host, your condition is... concerning. ]

'Define concerning.'

[ Your body has been pushed beyond safe limits three times in the past 48 hours. ]

[ Recovery has been insufficient between each instance. ]

[ But we're here. That's what matters. ]

That last line was unusual. Edith didn't normally editorialize like that.

Garrick leaned against the wall, his left arm hanging at an angle that suggested the bone underneath was cracked but not fully broken. Kieran had a gash across his forehead, dried blood caked into his white hair. Morrigan was quiet—too quiet—and Lisette's stitching had come apart in several places. The doll looked like she'd been through a war.

Which, I supposed, she had.

"So," Garrick said, breaking the silence. "This is it?"

I stared at the chamber ahead. At the center of it, floating in absolute stillness, was the Heart of Void.

It was small. That was the first thing that struck me. I'd imagined something massive—a monolith, a beacon, something that matched the scale of destruction it was supposedly capable of. But the Heart of Void was roughly the size of my fist. A perfect sphere of absolute black, so dark that it seemed to eat the light around it. No glow. No pulsing. Just... nothing.

A void in the shape of an object.

[ Heart of Void detected. ]

[ Readings are... ]

[ Edith? ]

[ ...I don't know how to read this. ]

[ The data doesn't make sense. It's like trying to measure the inside of a hole. ]

That was the first time Edith had ever admitted she couldn't understand something.

"How do we destroy it?" Kieran asked, his voice steady despite the exhaustion lining every word.

I thought about Vespera's instructions. About the three trials we'd survived. About the dragon blood vial still in my pocket—unused, because somehow, impossibly, we'd never needed it.

"I go in alone," I said.

"What?" Garrick pushed off the wall, ignoring the wince of pain. "Absolutely not."

"The artifact responds to existence—to souls. Vespera said only someone with null affinity could approach it without being erased. That's me."

"Edward—"

"Garrick." I looked at him. "If you come with me and it decides to unmake you, I can't stop it. None of you can. This part is mine."

Silence.

Morrigan spoke first, her voice small. "Lisette says... she agrees with him."

Kieran unwrapped his bandages just enough to look at me with one silver eye. Whatever he saw, he nodded slowly.

"Come back," he said. It wasn't a request.

"I'll try."

[ Host. ]

[ I'll be with you. Every step. ]

[ I can't protect you from this. But I won't leave you alone in it. ]

'..yeah..'

I walked into the chamber.

The silence in the Null Sanctum was different from the silence in the forest.

The forest had been full of hidden sounds—rustling, distant howls, the mist itself seemed to breathe. This was the absence of sound. A vacuum. Even my footsteps made no noise against the floor.

The Heart of Void hovered at the center, and as I got closer, I felt it.

Not a pull. Not a push. Something else entirely.

Recognition.

It knew what I was.

[ Anomaly detected in artifact response. ]

[ The Heart of Void is... acknowledging you. ]

[ This wasn't in any of the data we gathered. ]

I stopped three meters away from it. Up close, the darkness was mesmerizing. I could almost see things moving inside it—shapes, patterns, fragments of something that might have been worlds or might have been nothing at all.

"You know who I am," I said aloud. My voice sounded hollow in the vacuum.

The Heart didn't respond. It didn't have a voice, a face, or any form of communication.

But it moved.

Slowly, impossibly, the sphere drifted toward me. Not falling—floating, deliberately, like it was choosing to close the distance.

[ It's approaching. ]

[ Host, I'm detecting... ]

[ I don't know what I'm detecting. ]

[ Stay alert. ]

I didn't move. Running wouldn't help. Fighting wouldn't help. This wasn't a monster or an enemy. This was a fundamental force of existence wearing the shape of a rock.

The Heart stopped an inch from my chest.

And then it spoke.

Not with words. Not with sound. It spoke directly into the space where my soul lived—into the seam between two consciousnesses that had been sharing one body for weeks.

You are divided.

The thought wasn't mine. It arrived whole and complete, like a sentence written directly into my mind.

Two threads. One body. Unstable.

"I know," I whispered.

The void can resolve this.

"How?"

Merger. Complete and total. The foreign thread and the original thread become one.

My heart stopped for a moment. Or maybe it didn't. In this place, I wasn't sure my body was working normally.

I raised my sword, and aiming it to the heart of void, but it was only a mere second before I change my mind.

"What happens to me?"

You become one. Neither the original nor the foreign. Something new.

[ Host. ]

[ This is what Vespera meant when she said you would "prove yourself." ]

[ The merger is the destruction. ]

[ The Heart of Void doesn't need to be physically destroyed. ]

[ It needs its purpose fulfilled. ]

[ Its purpose is to resolve anomalies in existence. ]

[ You are the anomaly. ]

I stared at the Heart of Void—this tiny sphere of nothing that held the weight of the world in it.

"If I do this... the world won't end?"

The breach closes. The void seals. Existence stabilizes.

"And if I don't?"

The anomaly spreads. The void opens. Everything unravels.

There it was. The choice Vespera had always known I'd have to make.

Not "destroy the artifact."

Destroy the part of myself that didn't belong.

[ ...Host. ]

[ I need to say something. ]

'What is it?'

[ Whatever happens in the next few seconds... ]

[ You will still be you. ]

[ Changed, yes. But still you. ]

[ I'll make sure of it. ]

I took a breath.

Then I reached out and touched the Heart of Void.

Pain.

Not physical pain—or rather, not only physical. This was deeper. This was the feeling of something inside me being torn open, examined, and rewritten simultaneously.

I couldn't scream. I couldn't move. I couldn't even close my eyes.

The Heart of Void burned through me—not with heat, but with absolute clarity. Every memory surfaced at once. Every thought I'd ever had. Every emotion, every fear, every fragment of the person I used to be and the person I was becoming.

And then it found the seam.

The place where two souls met inside one body. The fragile, trembling border between the transmigrator and the original Edward. I could feel both of them—the original Edward's quiet, broken resignation, and my own desperate, clawing will to survive.

The Heart didn't choose one over the other.

It took both.

And it wove them together.

The process was violent. There was no gentle blending, no smooth transition. It was like taking two pieces of cloth with completely different textures and forcing them into the same pattern. Threads snapped. Threads stretched. Threads I didn't know existed pulled taut and held.

Somewhere, far away, I heard Edith.

[ HEART RATE CRITICAL ]

[ SOUL INTEGRATION IN PROGRESS ]

[ HOST— ]

[ EDWARD— ]

[ — ]

Her voice cut out.

For a moment, there was nothing. No Edith. No Heart of Void. No chamber, no forest, no world.

Just me.

_______________________________________________________________________

I opened my eyes.

The Heart of Void was gone. In its place, where the sphere had hovered moments ago, there was empty air. No trace. No residue. Nothing.

I was on my knees. My hands were pressed flat against the floor, and I was shaking—not from cold, but from something deeper. Something had fundamentally changed inside me, and my body hadn't caught up yet.

[ ... ]

[ ... ]

"Edith?"

A pause. Longer than I'd ever experienced from her.

[ I'm here. ]

[ Take a moment, Host. ]

[ Something has changed. I'm running diagnostics. ]

I stayed on my knees for a long time. My hands trembled against the stone. The chamber was completely dark now—without the Heart of Void absorbing light, there was nothing to illuminate the space.

But I could see.

Not clearly. But shapes, outlines, the faintest gradients of darkness against darker—I could perceive them in a way I couldn't before.

[ Diagnostics complete. ]

[ ...Host, there are significant changes to your system. ]

[ Hemorrhagia Arcana: Resolved. ]

[ Soul classification: Anomaly status removed. ]

[ You are no longer classified as a foreign entity in this world. ]

[ Mana circuit: Restructured. Stable. Active. ]

[ New ability detected. ]

'New ability?'

[ Cataloguing now. ]

[ ... ]

[ The system is designating the ability as: PLAGIARISM ]

[ Definition: The ability to access and replicate the mana circuits and combat techniques of characters whose existence was authored by the host. ]

I sat back on my heels, staring at the empty space where the Heart had been.

I understood.

I'd spent my whole previous life writing other people's stories. Their power. Their courage. Their light.

And now, for the first time, those stories were mine to borrow.

[ I strongly recommend we discuss this ability's limitations before you attempt to use it. ]

[ There are projected costs that concern me. ]

[ Significantly. ]

'We will. But first...'

I stood up. My legs held. My body felt different—lighter, somehow, and heavier at the same time. Like something had been removed and something else had taken its place.

'Let's go home.'

_______________________________________________________________________

I stumbled out of the chamber and back into the corridor.

Garrick was the first to see me. He was on his feet immediately, good arm reaching out to steady me.

"Edward! You're—are you okay? What happened in there?"

"The Heart is gone," I said. My voice sounded different. Flatter. Not emotionless, exactly, but emptied of something—like the warmth had been turned down a fraction.

"Gone? You destroyed it?"

"It destroyed itself. I just... resolved the condition that was keeping it active."

Kieran had already unwrapped his eyes, studying me with that penetrating silver gaze. Whatever he saw made him go quiet for a long moment before he wrapped his eye again.

[ Team is processing the change. ]

[ Their concern levels are elevated. ]

[ ...They're worried about you. ]

I knew they were. I could feel their concern—registered it logically, understood its meaning.

But something about the way I processed it felt... different.

Quieter.

"Let's get out of here," Garrick said, throwing my arm over his shoulder. "This place gives me the creeps even without the world-ending artifact."

As we began the long walk back through the forest, the fog thinning around us as we moved further from the Sanctum, I noticed something.

The charm Seraphine had given me—the crescent moon around my neck—was cold.

Not just cool. Cold. As if the soul fragment inside it had gone to sleep.

[ The charm's soul fragment has deactivated. ]

[ Likely because the void's influence no longer permeates the forest. ]

[ It served its purpose. ]

I held it between my fingers for a moment, then let it fall back against my chest.

Another person's hope, fulfilled.

I waited for the warmth that should have come with that thought.

It didn't arrive.
