Chapter 657: The Clash
Simultaneously, a Samson gunship maintained a low-altitude hover just above the canopy. Its rotors churned up the bioluminescent spores in the forest, creating a shimmering halo around the aircraft.
Inside the cockpit, Trudy Chacon expertly manipulated the flight controls, her gaze darting rapidly between her instrument panels and the sea of trees below.
"Maintaining altitude at twenty meters above the canopy," Trudy spoke over the comms to the Hellfire Squad members in the rear bay. "I will provide aerial overwatch and fire support for you."
In the rear bay, Sergeant Reynolds and his men closely monitored the movement below through the open doors.
The plasma rifles in their hands were primed, the energy indicators near the muzzles glowing faintly in the dim cabin.
"Everyone stay frosty," Reynolds commanded over the squad channel. "Our objective is to provide suppressive fire the moment the target is exposed. Let the Na'vi handle the tracking; we handle the termination."
This mixed formation—comprising air and ground elements, primitive tracking skills, and advanced technology—advanced slowly through the perilous jungle. Everyone acutely understood that they were hunting an incredibly dangerous and cunning adversary.
The Predator Strikes
Maine's squad followed closely behind the Na'vi hunters, maintaining a steady pace in the shadows cast by the canopy.
Above them, the steady thrum of the Samson's rotors provided ongoing aerial cover.
Maine and Dorio flanked their squad, their eyes vigilantly scanning the dense vegetation and jagged rocks. Maine periodically glanced up to verify the gunship's position while tracking the hand signals of the Na'vi hunters ahead.
Falco walked in the center of the formation, his hands steadily holding the heavily modified portable scanner.
Streams of data scrolled continuously across the screen, reflecting on his focused face.
"The scanner is experiencing massive background interference," he reported in a low voice, his brow furrowed. "Pandora's natural bio-electric field mixed with that unknown cloaking technology is forming a signal barrier. Currently, I can only estimate its general operational zone; I cannot secure a precise lock."
Rebecca, shouldering her signature heavy rotary cannon, brought up the rear. The massive barrels tracked slowly in sync with her line of sight.
She frequently checked their six o'clock while maintaining a watchful eye on the flanks. Her thick finger rested perpetually over the trigger guard, ready to unleash devastating firepower against any sudden threat.
This squad formed a flexible ground-support node between the Na'vi vanguard and the aerial platform, capable of delivering immediate fire support to the trackers ahead while coordinating with the gunship above.
Suddenly, a Na'vi hunter scouting at the very front let out a low, guttural warning growl and raised his arm.
The entire column froze instantly. Every weapon snapped toward the direction the hunter indicated—a particularly dense thicket choked with glowing vines and massive purple ferns.
It was dead silent, yet an invisible, suffocating pressure radiated from the area.
"Something is there..." Tsu'tey narrowed his eyes, tightening his grip on his longbow.
Almost the exact second his words fell, disaster struck!
Sssshk!
A searing plasma bolt shot out without warning from a rocky shadow on the team's rear flank, moving at astonishing speed! The target was unmistakably Falco, who was operating the scanner!
"Watch out!" Dorio reacted with lightning speed, lunging forward and tackling Falco to the ground.
Boom!
The plasma bolt grazed right past them, striking a massive bioluminescent tree behind them. The impact instantly blew a large, scorched crater into the trunk, sending splinters and glowing sap flying everywhere.
"Open fire!" Sergeant Reynolds roared.
The Hellfire operators immediately poured fire toward the origin of the plasma shot, blanketing the rocky outcropping in dense plasma beams.
The Na'vi loosed a torrential volley of arrows.
However, the area was completely empty.
After firing a single shot, the attacker had utilized its cloaking field to rapidly shift positions once again.
"Damn it! Where the hell is it?!" A Hellfire operator cursed through gritted teeth, infuriated by the helplessness of fighting an invisible foe.
Jake looked around frantically, his heart hammering against his ribs.
It was his first time experiencing a battle where the two sides operated on entirely different dimensional planes. Fear intertwined with the humiliating realization of being hunted as prey.
Just then, Falco scrambled up from the ground, ignoring his scrapes, and rapidly adjusted the scanner parameters.
"It moved! Residual energy spikes pointing toward... one o'clock! That fungal grove!"
The moment he heard the callout, Tsu'tey drew his bow and fired an arrow toward the massive grove of eerie blue fungi, relying entirely on his hunter's intuition!
The arrow wasn't aimed at a specific target, but rather into an area that appeared completely empty.
Then, an astonishing thing occurred.
Just a split second before the arrow struck, the light in that patch of space distorted once more. The invisible entity's silhouette flashed briefly; it seemed to execute an incredibly subtle pivot to dodge the arrow, but that very movement exposed its position.
"There!" Neytiri, having a clear vantage point from above, instantly guided her Ikran into a dive, attempting to pin it down from the air.
Rebecca let out a low roar as the heavy weapon on her shoulder violently roared to life, spitting a torrent of searing flame.
High-explosive rounds rained down upon the glowing fungal grove, instantly shredding the vibrant caps into thousands of drifting, glowing spores.
The shockwaves from the explosions echoed through the dense forest, violently shaking the surrounding vines.
This sudden barrage of heavy firepower had clearly exceeded the invisible attacker's calculations.
Amidst the explosive flashes and flying debris, the blurry silhouette was forced to reveal itself once more. Executing an incredibly agile combat roll to evade the primary blast zone, it vaulted powerfully onto a massive, moss-covered boulder.
Though the joint team's first coordinated maneuver was slightly unrefined, it yielded results—they had successfully forced the mysterious hunter to reveal its tracks, shattering its absolute control over the engagement.
The roles of hunter and prey began to rapidly swap within the treacherous jungle.
The Chase
Forced to retreat under Rebecca's heavy fire, the cloaked attacker immediately darted through the dense forest with terrifying speed. Its silhouette flickered in and out of the dappled shadows, behaving like a true phantom of the woods.
The joint team pursued relentlessly, initiating a high-speed chase and counter-chase across the complex terrain.
The Na'vi hunters fully utilized their mastery of the environment. Led by Tsu'tey, they used the trees for cover, constantly attempting to flank and corral the target.
Their precise arrows and heavy spears shot out from unexpected angles. Though they failed to land a direct hit, they effectively restricted the invisible entity's movement vectors.
High above, Trudy Chacon skillfully maneuvered the Samson, tracking the pursuit just above the canopy.
Sergeant Reynolds monitored the situation closely from the bay door, barking orders over the comms: "Fireteam Alpha, lock down the left flank! Fireteam Bravo, maintain suppressive fire! Do not give it room to breathe!"
