"Even the mightiest storm draws a line in the sand; cross it, and the calm becomes extinction."

The convention hall was quieter now.

The Atlantean delegation had departed through the Zeta tube.

Maya's family had left behind baskets of food and enough warmth to heat Gotham through winter.

Only a few remained: Lois, Clark, Tim, Bruce, Harley, Ace and King.

The great windows looked out over the sprawl of Gotham — lights flickering like embers under a grey-blue sky. The hum of the city below was steady, oblivious to the titans above.

Lois clicked her recorder back on.

"All right," she said softly. "Now that the crowd's gone… let's talk."

King inclined his head. "About?"

"About you," Lois said. "The man who moves mountains, rips glaciers, defies death — but still helps run a tattoo shop. About the human, if there is one."

Harley snorted from the snack table. "Good luck findin' that needle in the cosmic haystack, sugar."

Clark shot her a warning look. She grinned wider and stuffed another cannoli in her mouth.

King didn't answer right away. His eyes — calm and fathomless — drifted to the skyline.

"I've been called many things," He said finally. "A god. A ghost. A weapon. But none of them are true."

Lois leaned forward. "Then what is true?"

King's gaze fell to his hands — massive, calm, still faintly glowing with restrained energy.

"I am," He said, "the consequence of mercy misused."

Clark frowned. "You mean—"

"I was made myself invincible just to stay safe at first." King continued quietly. "Then my focus shifted in order to rebuild what was broken. But people... learned how to break faster. They learned that mercy has no teeth. That it could be exploited."

He looked up, eyes unreadable.

"So I gave it teeth."

Lois's pen hovered above her notepad, but she didn't write. "And that's your philosophy now? Mercy, with consequences?"

King shook his head once. "Mercy, with memory."

There was a stillness then — heavy, magnetic.

Lois swallowed. "Then where's the line? You say you don't rule, don't judge — so what crosses that line?"

For a heartbeat, no one breathed.

Then King spoke, low and absolute.

"Anyone who harms a child." He said.

"Anyone who corrupts their innocence, breaks their light or feeds on their fear. There is no redemption for that."

The hum of the tower dimmed as if the structure itself understood the weight of those words.

Even the air seemed to pull tighter.

Clark's expression hardened — a quiet, shared fury in his eyes. "Then you and I agree."

King turned to him. "I know, Clark. That's why I never interfered with your league. You fight with hope. I fight when hope is gone."

Lois exhaled slowly. "And when that happens?"

King looked down at her recorder, the faintest glimmer of something — not rage, not pride — but pain.

"When that happens," He said, "the world remembers why I exist."

Harley, for once, said nothing.

The silence stretched, filled only by the distant wail of Gotham sirens and the soft tapping of rain against the glass.

Then King's expression softened. "But there's a balance," he said, his tone gentler now. "Children… they remind us that the world's still worth saving. That creation isn't done yet."

Tim nodded slowly. "That's why you trust us, isn't it? To carry what you can't."

King smiled faintly. "Exactly. The world doesn't need gods forever. It needs those who remember what gods forgot."

---

Outside, lightning forked across the Gotham sky — a reminder that storms, no matter how calm their heart, always have a pulse.

And somewhere far below, the city's heartbeat matched his.
