Chapter 16 - 16: Eyes like Rain

"I did not tell them," Seren said.

Her voice was barely audible, but in the silent vault it carried like a blade. She had drawn her sword, and for the first time Nathan saw her hand shake.

"I know," said Isaura Solenne. "You didn't have to. You are an examiner of the Guild, and the Guild has been watching the Hall of Records for three days. When you requested a pass for a pair of 'research assistants,' I knew precisely who you meant to bring me." She smiled faintly. "You have always been honest to a fault, Seren. It makes you very easy to follow."

Seren's face went white.

"And the mark," Isaura continued, turning her pale gray eyes to Nathan. "The Chorus sets it on every child they believe to be of the blood. It is warm, isn't it? It tells us where you are." Her voice softened. "I am sorry. They have never learned subtlety."

Mira stepped in front of Nathan, her blade rising. "You're the one who wrote the lie."

"My ancestor wrote the lie. I inherited it." Isaura leaned lightly on her white staff. "Do you know what it means to hold a Great House together for forty years, girl? To keep the peace between Veyron, Ardent, and Solenne with nothing but a story? The story says the Destroyers were monsters. If the Houses learned otherwise, the capital would burn."

"That's your reason?" Mira said. "It's not the truth. It's *fear.*"

"It is both." Isaura looked tired for a moment. "You think I am cruel. I am merely old, and responsible for a great many people."

Nathan found his voice. "You have my mother's eyes."

The silence stretched.

"Elara," said Isaura at last, as if tasting the name. "My youngest. She ran from this house at nineteen with a Cladrake scout who was supposed to be a hostage. We searched for twenty years." Her gaze settled on his face, and there was no mockery in it, only a kind of terrible hunger. "You have her eyes, child. And mine."

The ground tilted under Nathan.

*Elara was her daughter.* His mother. The woman who hummed songs and folded shirts. She had been born into this house of ritual and lies, and she had never told him.

"You're my grandmother," he whispered.

"I am. Which is why, as a courtesy, I will make you an offer." Isaura raised one hand, and the guards behind her tensed. "You are the last of the hollow blood, and you are in grave danger. The Chorus wants you erased. The Guild wants you studied. But I can protect you. House Solenne can keep you in comfort and safety for the rest of your life, and your friends as well. All I ask is that you stay."

"Stay," Nathan repeated.

"Within my walls. Under my watch." She smiled. "Safe."

Mira made a sound like a growl. Seren's grip on her sword tightened.

Nathan stared at his grandmother's face. He searched it for something familiar, any trace of the woman in his memory, and found only a pale, patient courtesy that did not reach her eyes.

"You'd keep me in a cage," he said slowly. "Like the beasts Verain wanted to bind."

Isaura's smile didn't waver, but something behind it went cold.

"Take him," she said.

---

Everything happened at once.

Lucan flung out a hand, and chains of blue light lanced across the vault. Mira's wind blade met them in a shriek of sparks. Seren lunged with a cry that turned into a flash of silver, her sword catching two guards at the knees. The lamp swung wildly overhead, throwing wheeling shadows across the walls.

"Mira, the door!" Nathan shouted.

"I know!"

She cut a path through the guards, twisting wind around her ankles, and Nathan sprinted after her. A guard grabbed his scarf. He twisted free and felt it tear away, exposing the gray thumbprint on his brow.

"There!" Lucan roared. "The mark!"

More chains shot toward him. Nathan threw up his hand without thinking, and the hollow rose, vast and quiet, answering before he had finished the thought.

*Only the chains. Only that.*

They vanished.

He gasped. A shallow hollowness opened behind his eyes. A small one. He could still think. He could still stand.

But Lucan was staring at him with open fear, and beyond him Isaura's calm face had finally cracked.

"Stop him!" she cried. "Do not let him use it again, you fools!"

A wave of guards surged forward. Mira dragged Nathan toward the iron door, Seren fighting behind them with grim, bloody efficiency. They burst through into the spiral stair and Seren slammed the vault door shut behind her.

"Run!" she gasped. "Up. All the way up."

They climbed in the dark. Behind them, the door shuddered under blows.

"Why are you helping us?" Nathan panted. "They'll know it was you."

"They already know." Seren's voice was rough. "Isaura has been playing me for eleven years. I thought I was hunting a monster for the Guild. I was hunting her enemy for *her*."

At the top of the stair, Seren hauled open the east door, and the cold evening air hit their faces.

Behind them, deep in the vault, Isaura Solenne's voice floated up the stairwell, as calm and gentle as a lullaby.

"Let them run. The ash will bring him home."
