The world they returned to was darker than the one they'd left.
Liang Qiu met them at the Abyss entrance, and his face was haggard with stress. "You're back. Thank the heavens."
"What happened?" Kai asked, sensing immediately that something was wrong.
"Everything. The Phoenix Flame Sect launched a surprise attack six months ago. We held them off but lost thirty disciples and two elders. Three of our allied sects defected, bought off by promises of territory. And the demon beast tide... it's started. Three months early, hitting the Eastern Wastes."
Kai felt his heart sink. Three months early meant Ling Xiao was in danger right now.
"I need to go to the Eastern Wastes immediately," Kai said.
"Kai, you just returned from a year in the Abyss. You need rest—"
"Someone I care about is there. Someone who died in my... in my visions. I have to save her."
Liang Qiu studied him, then nodded. "Go. But take a team. The Eastern Wastes are overrun with demon beasts at Nascent Soul level and above."
"I'll go with him," Yuhan said immediately.
"Obviously." Liang Qiu almost smiled. "You two are Soul Transformation realm now, aren't you? I can feel it. One year in the Abyss and you jumped three major realms."
"We trained hard," Kai said simply.
"You did the impossible. Again." Liang Qiu's expression turned serious. "The cultivation world is changing. War is coming, probably within the year. When you return from the Eastern Wastes, we need to discuss the sect's future. You two are part of that future now—whether you want to be or not."
They flew toward the Eastern Wastes at maximum speed, covering in hours what would take normal cultivators days. Soul Transformation realm came with abilities that defied normal physics.
The Eastern Wastes were burning.
Demon beasts swarmed across the landscape—twisted creatures from the demon realm, corrupted by chaotic energy. Refugees fled toward safer territories, carrying what little they could.
Kai's family compound was under siege when they arrived. Demon beasts surrounded the walls, attacking in waves. The family's defenders were faltering, their numbers depleted.
"Ling Xiao," Kai said urgently. "She'll be at the main house, protecting my father's position."
They descended like avenging angels. Kai's void techniques obliterated demon beasts by the dozens, while Yuhan's sword cut through them like they were paper.
Within minutes, the siege was broken. The remaining beasts fled before their overwhelming power.
Kai ran to the main house, searching desperately. He found her in the courtyard, sword in hand, standing over his wounded father. She was injured, bleeding from multiple wounds, but alive.
"Young master?" Ling Xiao stared in shock. "You're... different."
"I'm back. And I'm getting you out of here." Kai turned to his father. "Father, gather everyone who can travel. We're evacuating to the sect."
Shen Zhu, pale from blood loss, nodded weakly. "My son. You came back."
"Of course I did."
Over the next hours, they organized an evacuation. Two hundred members of the Shen family and their servants, all flying toward Azure Sky Sect under Kai and Yuhan's protection.
Demon beasts tried to attack during the journey. Kai and Yuhan eliminated them effortlessly, their Soul Transformation power making such threats trivial.
When they reached the sect, Liang Qiu personally welcomed the refugees. "We'll find space for everyone. Shen Zhu, your family is welcome here."
Kai's father bowed deeply. "Thank you, Sect Master. And thank you, my son. You saved us all."
Later, in the medical pavilion where Ling Xiao was being treated, Kai sat beside her bed.
"You saved me," she said quietly. "Again."
"What do you mean, again?"
"I don't know. I just... I feel like you've done this before. Like you've saved me from something terrible." She looked at him curiously. "Young master, what happened to you in that year you were gone? You're so different. Stronger, older somehow."
"I grew up," Kai said simply. "Learned what really matters."
"And what's that?"
"The people worth protecting. Like you."
Ling Xiao smiled despite her injuries. "You were always kind, young master. Even when others called you trash, even when you had no power—you were kind. That's why I followed you."
"I'm glad you did."
Saving Ling Xiao was only the first step. The demon beast tide was spreading across the Eastern Wastes. Thousands were dying. The timeline had accelerated even beyond Kai's worst fears.
That night, meeting with Liang Qiu and the sect's war council, Kai laid out their situation starkly.
"The demon beast tide is just the beginning. The Phoenix Flame Sect will use the chaos to attack us while we're distracted. Other sects will make their moves. Within a year, we'll be in a full multi-realm war—the Chaos Wars."
"Can we prevent it?" an elder asked.
"No. It's too late for prevention. But we can prepare. We can position ourselves to minimize casualties. We can try to save as many as possible."
"How?" Liang Qiu asked.
Kai looked at Yuhan, who nodded. Time for truth.
"Because we've seen this before. In visions, in prophecies—call it what you want. But we know what's coming. And we know how to fight it."
"Then we'll need an army," Liang Qiu said. "A coalition of sects willing to stand against both the Phoenix Flame alliance and the demon realm invasion."
"We're building that coalition," Yuhan said. "Starting now."
The war council lasted until dawn. Plans were made, alliances proposed, resources allocated.
The Chaos Wars were coming.
But this time, Kai and Yuhan were ready.
This time, they'd fight to win.
